C WX Wff - A A VICTIM OF A CORPORATION. IIott n I'realdent nnd Clonernl Mnnncer "Vrn I'roron Out liy 111 Cnnipnnlona, "Spcnking of corporations," said n proniinont St. Louis bnnkcr, "I recall with painful reminiscence tlio first ono of which I had tho honor to ho u stock holder. It happened in 1SG.", nnd 1 was just fifteen years of ago. Of coursn I had no idea that it w.tM really n corpora tion in which I hnd invested, hut ns 1 look hack upon tlio incident tho realiza tion rushes upon mo that I was a victim of corporation uieihodn. "It happened in this way. At a very early ago iny tendency for mcrcnntilo pursuits developed. At school I noticed n very general doninnd for candy nnd i-nkfs nnd an exceedingly limited supply in tho market. Many of tho children possessed coppers nnd nickels, hut it wns nrnrly n milo from tho school homo to tho country town, nnd tho boys wero compcllad to forago upon tho noighlxv ing sugar cano fields nnd orchards to sat isfy tho youthful stomach. After n care ful survey of tho market 1 decided that tho school wns confronted by a condi tion, not n theory. "In n few days I hnd secured tho co operation of half ft dozen boys, with n capitnl of thirty conts, in which I held ten conts of tho stock, and was conse quently named ns president nnd man ager of tho candy store which wo pro posed to open on the grounds. Wo found nn enormous dead nnd fallen tree, whoso butt end offered littlo resistance to ou: penknives. At noon ono day I notified tho stockholders thnt a mooting would bo hold immediately after school, nnd at that meeting I, ns president nnd man ager, cut nn opening into tho dead treo, fashioned a shelf therein nnd attached u door, whilo tho stockholders looked on in admiration. I then proposed that enrly in tho morning each stockholder Bhould bring with him five cents' worth of candy wherewith to stock tho juvonilo storo. "To my astonishment It wns moved and seconded and carried that tho candy should be purchased nnd dolivercd nt onco. so that the btorc might havo nn early nnd perfect opening. Tired ns I was I repaired to tho town, invested my ten cents in cheap candy, returned to tho school grounds, whero already tho twilight was making ghostly figures among tho trees, and deposited my treas ure in the Btore. It wns quite dark when I reached homo, nnd being unable to ac count for my whereabouts tho presi dent nnd manager went to bed supper lesB.nnd with n back stinging from the effects of u switch liberally upplied. Next moruing I hastened to the school grounds in order to bo first nt the cere monies. Imagino my surprise when I found there, Beated in a row, nil the stockholders. I congratulated them on their interest in the enterprise, and then threw open tho door of the candy Btore. It was empty! "For a moment I was speechless. The stockholders bent their heads and said nothing. They looked suspiciously con tented, and when 1 intimated that some good man among us had gono wrong they were nil prepared to prove that a daring burglar had, in tho midnight hour, deprived tho corporation of its as sets. "Ten yenrs later ono of tho stockhold ers admitted that he had helped his brethren in disposing of tho stock." St. Louis Republic. filmvlnc tho Heard In Itnasln. Peter the Great thought to civilize his savages by making them shave and im posed a tax of 100 rubles on tho wealthy and middle classes nnd a copeck on poasants nnd laborers. Now it was a superstition nmong tho poorer people that no beardless son of Adam could ever enter heaven, and being obliged to part with their beards tho great ma jority treasured up their hairs to be buried with their bodies. In dealing with his soldiers the great Peter eulisted the nid of the priests, who cunningly pointed out tho fact that they wero go ing to light the bearded Turk and that their patron, St, Nicholas, would bo un nble to distinguish them from their ene mies unless they sacrificed their beards. This was all right, and the beards of the beloved Russians wont down before tho razor in deference to St. Nicholas. But, unluckily for the priests, the next little war happonod to be with the Swedes, who wore no beards, and thus it was that the Russian soldiers de manded to bo allowed t6 abjure the razor, so thut the holy Nicholas might have no difficulty in nrrnnging for their protection. English Illustrated Maga zine. Tho Scottish Ilogmany, A satisfactory explanation of tho term "hogmany," used by tho Scots to desig nate tho last day of the old year, haa never yet been giveu, but there nro two suppositions which nro quito plausible. Ono in that tho term "hogmany" is do rived from "hogenot" or "hogg night," tho Scandinavian name for the night preceding tho feast of yule, when ani mals wero sacrificed, tho word "hogg" meaniug to kill. Tho other derivation is from tho French, "au guo menez," "to tho mistletoo go," referring to tho Druids' custom on New Year's eve of collecting the miotlotoo from tho oaks, and nftor consecrating it distributing it nmong the peoplo of tho Gauls, by whom it wns prized becnuso of tho many virtues ascribed to it. Exchange A Curious Japuueno Cureuiouy. It is "after nightfall on tho last night of tho old year" that a curious core mony called oui horai, or "devil expul sion," ia performod. Tho head of tho family with a box of roasted baans goes into every room in tho house, and scat tering tho beans about the room and into every corner cries out: "Faku wa achi, oni wa soto" "Happiness within, tho devil w'thout." On thut night xto one is Bupposed to sleep, but if ono Bhould for any reason go to sleep ono must certainly wake at about 4 o'clock of Now Your'a day, which is "tho day of tlio threo beginnings of a day, a month unci u yeur."- Exchange, Transfer. Tho February Cosmopolitan presents a careful review of Mr. Blulno's characteristics ns a man Hnd statesman, propnred hy Mr. T. C. Crawford, and illustrated by Humorous sketches of his home, and famous cartoons apropos of striking phases of his political career. Curiously enough, this is found side by side with General Bttdcau's sketch of Lord Bciicousfleld. Badeau, when Sec retary of Legation, wns acquainted with Disraeli, and tho alternately bi zarre and magnificent political figure cut by this extraordinary man is de scribed in a most readable manner. The second nrticle in the series oT the "Great Railway Systems of tho United States"' nlsa appears in this number, thu Atcbhon, Topskn &S.iiilaFu, with its more than ten thousand miles of track being treated. Tho utory is told of its early beginnings, of the ttuto cr.itio power wielded by Us managers over more than ono-quarler of our ter ritory. Few poonle not living on the lino of this road have any conception of its marvelous importance. A delight ful Japanese story, "Toki Murata," and a jeu d'esprit entitled "June,1903," from tho pen of Julian Hawthorne, urc unusually entertaining; tho flying machine, has never given opportunity for a wittiur, and at tho samo time moro valuable speculation than Mr. Hnwthoruo's. Tho making of beet root sugar is ono of tho rapidly grow ing interests on tho North American continent, but the first time in maga zine literature it is hero thoroughly explnined in every process, helped out by photographs of tho seed, tho roots, the method of cultivation and tho most improved machinery for conversion into sugar. The February number of Tho Art Amateur is a particularly interesting one. For a frontispiece thero is a fine reproduction of a spirited study of a head by Alphouso Lcgros, late Slade Professor at University College, Lon don, which is an ndmirablo example of tho artist's pencil work. "Greta's') Boston letter deals with tho threatened extinction of the Art Commission, Mr Sirgent's painting for tho Library building, tho momorial exhibition of Foxcroft's work, and the Chanlor Scholarship. Thero is a concise nnd pithily written account of tho New York Water-Color Club Exhibition. and also that at the Century Club of Pre-Raphaelite pictures, Noxt comes the first paper of an illustrated article on tho Vandorbilt prints, which has a beautiful littlo reproduction of Rem brandt's etching ot himself. Tho article on Prud'hon and Mile. Mayor Is profudy illustrated with fino re productions of tho Master's work, in cluding his charming pastel portrait of Mile. Mayor. A most practical article, which is the first of tho series, on "Portraiture in Crayon," by J. A. Bar hydt, ono of tho most accomplished crayou-drauuhtsmon, is followed by an equally well-written paper by Mrs. Emma Haywood, which contains lucid instructions for tho "Mixing of Colors for Tapestry Painting." Somo excol- lont hints on "Pen-Drawing," by Mr. E. J. Meeker, which aro il'ustrated with examples ot tho work, are given in plain and understandable language Miss B. M. Smith contributes somo moro of hor "Easy Lessons In Flower Painting" and "Landscape Painting in Oil Colors," both of which nro first rnto. "The Monarch of tho Forest," a beautiful pencil drawing by Arinnnd Cawagno, brings tho "Gallery and Studio" to a close. Thoro is also an excellent paper of instruction in China Faintlug, uy Miss K. n. names. ah nrticle which desorves to bo popular with all, is one showing how to furnish a house artistically and at the samo tlrao Inexpensively: It is profusely Illustrated with workable designs.
