A Uooso I'nll of Gratitude. An interesting relic is preserved in a glass case in the I oldstream Guards orderly room at Whitehall, says tho Million. It consists of tho head nnd lieclc of a ffoose, around winch is a golden collar, with the "Jacob, Second Battalion, Guards." Beneath it are "Died on duty." In 18:itS, inscription: Coldstream the words: when two of the battal ons were in Canada help ing to quell the rebellion, some of the soldiers weie posted as sentr es round a farmyard near Quebec. One day the sentry whose duty it was to watch the entrance to the farm beheld a flno goose lleeing towards him, closely pursued by a fox. His first in pulse was to have shot at the latter, but this would have alarmed the guard, lie as compelled, there fore, to remain silent, wliile every step brought Ueynard nearer to his prey. In tho height of despair the poor bird ran its head and neclc between tho legs of the soldier, and at the same moment the uiiy fox made a desperate grab at the goose: but too late, for ere he could get 11 f ather between his teeth ti e ready b.ivonet of the bontinel had passed through h s body. The pen- goose, by way of showing its gratitude to its preserver, rubbed its head against his legs und made other equally curious demonstrations of joy. Nor could il ever be prevailed upon to quit the po-t, but wulked up and down dy alter day with each succes sive sentinel that was placed there. The most remarkable thing in connec tion vi ith the storv is that the goose in turn actually saved her prt-server's life. It so happened that the same sentry was on that particular post about two months afterwards when a desperate attempt wns made to kill him. It was winter time, and several men stole up in the darkness to the I bontry's post, their footsteps inaudible on the soft snow. The soldier mean while marched up and down his lonely J beat, follow. -d by the devoted goose, until he again stood at oase before the I sentry ! o j. This was the enemy's opportunity. But just, as two of their number were preparing -with uplifted knivoa to spring upon the unsuspecting man, the bird rose suddenly on its winge, right iu the faces of the would-bo as sassins. They were astonished and rushed blindly forward; but the oon try, fully aroused to his danger, bayo neted one and shot the other as he was running away. Meanwhile, the other conspiratora approached, but the bird repeated Its tactics und enabled the sentry to koep them at bay until tho guard came upon tho scene and made them fly for their lives. On arrival of the regiment in London the bird resumed its old duties with the Buntinel posted at the barrack gates. Jacob ' was eventually run i over by a van, and died at the pobt of duty after a "sentry go" of twelve years. Who Stolo That Wlilnky'.' S. C. Miles, Stotsonville, Wis., says that an inqu ry was lately made if Gen. O. '' Blank, 111 command of a di vision encamped at Clear Creek in Au gust, 1 till-', ever found out who stole his whisky. So far as tho writer knows tho faats in the case were: Gen. Blank was the owner of a fine barrel ol whisky, which he kept against the outside of his tent right by the beat of tho guard over the com missary btores. it wan on a darTt and dibmal night that a certain member of the Eighth iseonsin, whose name shall be unmentioned, who was pacing that beat, and wishing to occupy his timo to more purpose than merely idly promuiiadln, conceived the Idea of bottling up tho general's barrel of whisky k as to have It handy for the gcneral'a use in the morning. So h procured a lot of t-mpty ca teena frott guard headquarters, formed a funnel from a piece of canvau, and prying out the bung with the buyonot.ho pro ceeded very industriously to work, quite anxious to accomplish his self imposed task before being relieved from duty. Of course, ufter he was .-elleved ho could not be expected to ntay around headquarters until morning-, and on oa.ll In p around thon, to enjoy tho frenoroVa aurnrlso and thanlcB for his thoughtful em ployment of hi time, Ininglno hli own surprise and dUappolntmout at finding tho canteens all gone, with tliolr prcoloua contents, and no oiu' able to account for them or thoir (lis appoarnnoo. KnoTrlug- from and ox porlouce that army olilcors are gonor nlly very unapproolativo of good in tcntiona of the private soldier, ho con cluded that ho would notaay anything to Gen. Blank about the matter, nnd it was probably jnst as well that he didn't, as he says that when the gon eral came out to look after tho water ing and trimming of hi whialcy plant that morning, and his eagle eye toolt in the situation, the look ho gave just then will never be effaced from tho tablet of hia momory. The general immediately aroused the camp, mid tho guards were brought before him, one at a tlmo. Sergeants nnd cor porals wcro threatened with reduc tion to th ranks if they did not tell who stole that whisky. Ilut no man knew anything whatever about it. How could they? It was a very dark night, nnd they wero not instructed ta sit all night on tho general's whisky barrel. So, after keeping the guard from being rolloved until noon, tha goneral terminated tho inquiry in dis gust and permitted the suspected guards to go to their respective reel ments. Now the writer was informed that whisky seemed to bo unlimited in supply all that afternoon, and tho boys of the Second Brigade wero on a big spree. However, he docs not know about thatj.for certain. Irllhmen at Fort Sumter. Not long before he died, Gen. Ab ner Doubleday related an incident of the bombardment of Fort Sumter. It seems that there was a number of Irish workiufrmen in thefortrcBS when the bombardment began. The Irish men were asked to help man tho guns againut the rebel ships, but they stood aloof. Finally Gen. Doubleday with drew from three cannon because the fort was badly battered at thoir em brasures, and it was deemed danger ous. An Irishmen went up to one of the guns, aimed and fired. "Faith, I struck the ship!" he criod. In a few minutes all the Irishmen were bravely working the guns and continued to fight until the evacuation. Na tr lllUe for the Army. Tho ordnance department of the armv is makimr preparations to b ecrin the manufacture of the army rille at the Springfield armory Immediately after the beginning of the fiscal year. The riile is of very small caliber, in tended to use smokeless powder, and is a niagaziue arm. It is estimated that within one year from July 1 next the total output of the armory will be about 12,000 rifles, which is made pos sible by tho use of the mott modern labor-saving machinery. This num ber of rifles will probably suffice to arm the ontiro infantry and artillery branches. llow to Cook Silkworm . Many of the people of Madagascar are for the most part Christianized and in a groat measure civilized, but like their distant relatives, the civilized Hawailans. they retain some queer articles on their bills of fare. At Antananarivo, the capital of Madagas car, a very goo t paper is published in French called the Protrres de 1 Irner- Ina. It has a domestic department, which In a recont Issue began ns fol lows: Household Eccoipts. Silkworms a la Bechamel "iseluot about thirty young and very tender ohrysnlldes, wash them in several waters and cook thorn briskly in boiling water, into which a good pinch of salt has been stirred. "After bollin? several minutes take the worms out, drain off the water, rrash them with a little cold woter.and Bponge them with a piece of clean linen. "Pif teen minutes before serving them plunge the crysalldes Into a good bechamel sauce, prepared beforehand for the purpose." People who like chrynalidei will no doubt find this a very good way to cook them. If tho chrysalis of the silkworm Is good to eat, there seems to be no reason why otherB should not be also. The adoption of this Malagasy dish might open a new avenuo of use fulness for the tnt-caterpillur which annually devastates our orchards. HniMsratltlmK.
