Flvo armed and masked road agents hold up an elec tric car in the outskirts of tho city be tween 8 and 9 o'clock Monday night nnd went through tho passengers in regular train robber fashion. One pas .sengcr wns shot and two or three others clubbed, and the robbers escaped with out leaving a clew of an3' kind as to their identity. The spot selected for tho robbery wns near tho lierwyn avenue crossing of Evunston avenue, the latter thoroughfare being tho one used by the North Shore Electric Street Rail road company for its cars between tho northern city limits and the suburban city of Evanston. Tho car makes fast timo along this stretch of the run, and Monday night it had eighteen passengers, two of whom were women. As tho ear ap proached Bcrwyn avenue, north bound, the motoriuau noticed a group of men standing nt tiie side of the track. At the moment he noticed the men two of thnm stepped out in front of tho car nnd signalled to stop. As the car came to a standstill two of the robbers stepped upon the front platform nnd three ascended the steps of the rear platform. Then it was no ticed that tho men wore masks and their purpose was suspected. The suspicion was not formed in tho minds of the passengers when one of the robbers opened the front door nnd said: "If you people behave yourselves nnd make no noise you won't get hurt. But you've got to keep quiet nnd give up what you've got." His remarks were reinforced with a huge revolver and the passengers were thinking about giving resistance when the lights in the ear went out, the thieves having taken off the trolley polo and removed the generator wrench from the motorman so tho power could not bo governed. The darkness compelled the passengers to submit, and then the searching process was inaugurated. All of the eighteen occupants of tho car were robbed of various amounts of money, watches and jewelry. Tho value of the plunder Is not known, but will probably amount to between S500 and SS00. As the bandits entered A. E. West man sat at the side of the car. In his hands he held a heavy cane. As tho robbers entered he half raised it as if to strike. One of them seized it and, wrenched it from his hands. Then the bandit poised his new weapon in the air and struck Westman a terrific blow in the face. It brought the blood spurt ing. It was the signal for a general at tackan attack without mercy or com passion. N. O. Johnson had tried to rise in his place. He was struck to tho earth with a blngle blow from tho cane. As he lurched forward with a great gash, in his head ho was struck again. Then he lay still and white. The robbers bent over and wrenched his watch and chain from his pocket and slid them quickly into their own. A robber approached T. P. Nisbett and demanded his money. Nisbett arose from his seat and knocked tho revolver up. Then lie dealt the robber a terrific blow in the face that sent him reeling to the opposite side of the car. But it was only a moment. Recovering himself, the revolver dropped to the horizontal. At the same instant an other robber struck Nisbett in tho face and sent him to one side. It baved his life, for at that moment the bhot was fired and the bullet pierced his leg at the knee. But the robbers knew that their shots would soon alarm the distant I settlers. And another car was soon due. There was a signal from the shock-haired leader. Instantly the robbers rode down their victims on their way to tho doors, and a moment later they were swal lowed up in tho dark. There were those who followed in their anger to trace the robbers. In Berwin avenue the five men sprung into an old Mirrey, ! laid the lash to the horses and rattled west, and were soon beyond pursuit. The police authorities wore notified of the affair, and searched all night, but without result. By his presence of mind Conductor Osborn saved the fares which he had collected during tho day, und wus therefore almost tho only person on the car to escape the robbers. When the masked men began to beat tho passengers the conductor grasped his money in his hand and dropped it all down in tho spaco back of tho seats where tho wiudows fit down when they are open. In this way tho money could not be reached. The en tire time consumed by the robbers did not exceed five minutes, and the wounded victims arrived in Edgewater not more than an hour late.
