The woman doctor is nlready nn ac complished fact, but as yet she has ap parently made no considerable wny in public favor, says the Scottish liovicw. It may bo contended that there is some thing hi tho art of healing in accord with the primary instincts of a woman's nature. Hut if we look closer into tho subject it will bo seen that there is more than mere prejudice and long established custom to account for tho exclusion of tho femalo sex in the past from the practice of. this calling. Have women tho calmness of nerve tho aplomb, so to bay tho steadiness of hand and pulse for tho work of tho sur geon? Is it possible to suppose that a non-abnormal woman, with her more highly strung constitutional sensibility, could amputate a limb with the same imperturbability that we should look for in tho male operator? To this it may bo replied that grant ing a certain drawback to women by reason of sex in tho matter of burgical experiments, tho case is different with the "metier" of tho physician, and that here, at least, tho sexes can eompoto on terms of perfect equality. Yet, again, as a matter of plain fact, nro tho services of lady doctors much in re quest with their own sex nay, even in those branches of tho therapeutic art dealing with specially feminine ali ments? Moreover, if tho advanced woman's theory of exact professional equality and indifference as to box is to bo maintained, why should any bar rier suggest itbelf to tho consultation of medical women by men, any more than now exists in tho calling in of women of tho male practitioner? Hut is there no such barrier? Surely tho mere statement of the case disposes of tho parity argument. Wo havo heard of a man here and there resorting to lady experts in mas sage, but that men should go to women doctors and lay bare their bodily iymp toms in tho camo way us women have done from time immemorial to their male medical advisers, would be a pro cedure repugnant on both sides, and "not convenient" for obvious reasons. Here, then, while udmittitig thut a bpriukling of females may, perhaps, usefully (iad their mission in obtaining employment as doctors among a limited I number of their own box, wo aro I brought faco to faco witli tho eternal and linmutablo disparity of sex. MTOMi523iP' ONLY SIX WEEP TEARS OF JOY.' How tho Iloroc. of n Hundred Different Novels l'ropoiu. Somo one with nothing else to do has investigated tho way hi which heroea Jn n hundred different novels aro repre sented as proposing. Seventy-two, says London Answers, hold tho lady's hand, seventeen hold it very tisrhtly, fourteen) havo lumps in their throats and ninoj exclaim aloud: "Thank heavcnl" Only soven out of tho hundred declare them selves to bo deliriously happy, and flvo aro too full for utterance. Throe out! of tho hundred stand on their feet when they make a proposal and two get down on ono knee, while nino mako! formal speeches. Tho behavior of thd lady under tho circumstances is equally) entertaining and instructive. Out o the hundred cases eighty-one sink into1 the arms of tho gentlemen, stxty-cightj rest their heads on the gentleman's .breast, and only ono sinks into tho arms of a chair; eleven clasp their arms' around the gentleman's neck; six weep tears of joy silently nnd forty-four weep tears aloud whatever that' means; seventy-two havo eyes full of love, nnd nino of the hundred rush from tho room and tell everybody. Only four aro greatly surprised, and eighty-seven out of tho hundred knewi that something was coming. Five gig gle hysterically. Only one of tho hun dred struggle not to bo kissed, while six kiss their lovers first. i AN INLAND LAKE WITH TIDES.! Peculiarities of Kildlno Described by Itua- nlan Scloutlsts. I Russian scientists have lately been studying tho curious island of Kildlno, off tho coast of Russian Lapland, and separated from It by a narrow strait. This island, says tho New York Sun, has a lake that has no risible connect tiou with tho sea, but is affected with! tidal movements. To be sure, the tides' in the lake rise and fall only a fowl inches, whilo those in the surrounding! sea rise and fall several feet. Tito peri odicity of the lake tides makes it plauV that the lako has subterranean coramu-' nication with tho sea. ! The water on tho island is of threol kinds, fresh water from rains and fromj brooks at the highest points; a littlQ lower salt water liko that of tho scat at tho lowest point Bea water, sur charged with free sulphuretted hydro gen. Tho fresh water is inhnbitedby tha animal life usual in tho fresh wntor ol that region. Tho salt water has seai creatures, sponges and tho like, while) tho water surcharged with sulphuretted hydrogen has neither vegetable nor animal life. Tho phenomenon of thia sulphuretted hydrogen has its counter part iu the depths of tho Black sea, where tho presence of the gas destroys animal and vegetable Hie.
