Thl3 fits down over the eyes and will soon be the means of calming his haughty spirits. PIGS AND CLOVER. A Little Grain Should Be Fed During 4he Summer. i Pigs should not be carried through the summer on clover alone. A little grain will be required to balance the green clover. It is claimed by somo that pigs can make just as good growth on Alfalfa or clover alone as thoy would if a little corn were given with tho green forage. While It may be true that the pigs will make a profitable growth on al falfa or clover, It is not true that they will do as well on these green feed3 alone as they will It given a llttlo grain in addition. The grain is needed to increase the number of pounds of food elements without corresponding ly increasing the amount of dry mat ter. Several years ago the Nebraska sta tion made an experiment to learn what proportion of grain to alfalfa was needed to make the most economical ration for growing pigs. It was found that the cost of producing 100 pounds of grain on alfalfa pasture alone, was about 4.30. On Alfalfa pasture with an addition of one and one-third pounds of grain the cost of 100 pounds of grain was lowered to $2.74 per 100. When the grain ration was increased to two and a half pounds per day, the cost was lowered to $2.45. It can be seon by feeding only one and a third pounds of grain ration per day, tho cost of producing the 100 .pounds of gain was lowered nearly one-half. While one single test should not be taken as reliable. It certainly shows that pigs should not be expected to pass the summer without a llttlo grain ration. DOCKING LAMBS. It 6hould Be Done Early, So Wounds Will Heal Quickly. The lamb Is docked when it Is from ten days to two weeks old. If left un til older the blood vessels are better developed and there Is a chance of the .lamb's bleeding to death, says the Criterion. At this stage the wound heals quickly and growth Is not Inter rupted. The simplest tools to use is a sharp, clean butcher knife. If an attendant can be had he holds the lamb In his arms, feet up. With one hand he holds tho legs and with the other he draws the skin around tho tall within ono Inch of the body to ward tho body, so that 'when the tall is cut off tho skin will slip back and1 partially cover the stub of the tall. The tall Is cut off with a butcher knife while 'it lies on a small block of wood, and within ono and one-half inches of tho body. After tho docking tho lambs aro closely watched for an hour or two. Sometimes .one bleedB more than he should and a string is tied about tho stub to stop the bleeding, after which the string is removed. Quality of Meat of Beeves. Tho quality of meat of beef animals has enormously lmpioved under con ditions of high breeding and high feeding. This has been in part duo to tho lack of exercise which has made tho muscles softer and it has been in part duo to the selection for breeding of those animals having tho right conformation to Insure tho best kind of meat. I had 4 acres of 2 rowed barley on fall breaking that did not do so well, yet it ripened and gave me all tho feed I need for stock and seed for this spring. I did not have grain threshed, so can't glvo yield, but tho wheat would have gone at least 25 bu. to tho acre. The officer in command of the di vision was a dignified martinet. The "rookey" had never seen him. About midnight the general came home from a reception In town. Ho was all fixed up In his dress togs and ho was the swellest thing the new guard ever saw. As the general passed his post the boy gazed at him open-mouthed. We do not hesitate to say that a timely use of Oastoria would save a ma jority of these precious lives. Neither do we hesitate to say that many of these infantile deaths are occasioned hy the use of narcotic preparations.' Drops, tinctures and soothing syrups sold for children's complaints contain moreAor less opium, or morphine. They are, in considerable quantities, deadly poisons.1' In any quantity they stupefy, retard circulation and lead to congestions, sickness, death.
