Passing counterfeit money is likely tobecomea very unpopular thing with those who happen to.haye some passed on them. A young man in this county was the victim of somo counterfeit. Like many others, he decided to pass it on and attempted twice to do so without success. He was finally ar rested for the attempt. Then the offic ial, learning that his general character was good, released him without bind ing him oyer to the federal authorities, as this would haye meant a year in the penitentiary at the least. Better pocket your loss hereafter. The Remedy That Does. "Dr. King's Now Discovery Is tho remedy that does the healing others promise but fall to perform," says Mrs. E. R. Dut Capt. Al ninrez, tho Chilian swashbuckler, al ready had been thoro a week, nnd I wns suro that ho had tho bettor chance. She smiled at him as she novor smiled at me. It mado mo angry. That wao why I challenged him to duel, with pistols. I thought ho was a coward and thnt ho would not fight. "Ah, captain," said be, "let ua not mess up tho hacienda with shooting ono another. Let us settle It another way." Ho led mo out Into the yard where tho senor hnd two condors chained to Iron posts. Great birds they woro, with wings thnt spread perhaps ten feet. Tho senor had raised them from chicks, they told mo. "Tho birds, captain they glvo mo an Idea. They never hnve flown, but their strong wings will bear them far. If a baskot were fastened to them, they could lift a mnn In tho air per haps. It would be worth trying." "Wlint do you mean?" I asked. "Since you wish n duel to the death, let us toss for It the loser to voyage Into tho air with the birds." It was at foolish Idea, but I would not be bluffed by tho Chilian. "All right, Almainz," I said. It Is a queer country down thero at the foot of tho Andes. When Inez and tho senor heard aiout It, Instead of trying to prevent tho odd duel be tween Alamaraz and myself, they en couraged It. Tho neighbors rode In from nearby haciendas, and all tho servnnts nnd riders on tho rancho gathored to sec the senor toss the coin. "Tails," said he. "Capt. Wells wins. Almaraz will make the voy age." Pretty Inez kissed tho Chilian good by, and I almost wished that I had lost. "Adols, dear one," she said. "The saints and the blessed virgin will savo you." Almaraz climbed Into the wicker basket which had been harnessed to the giant birds. The senor unfas tened the chain and the condors took wing. For nn Instant It seemed certain that Almaraz would bo upset from tho basket. The birds resented their close partnership, and 50 to 100 feet In tho air he performed like an acro bat keoplng them together. Thero were somo angry attempts at swoop ing on the part of ono of them, with talons splayed, and quite a bit of con dor music. But tho bigger of the two was a steady-minded bird, with Its eye on the snowy peaks of tho Andes In tho west. The rebellious one, after a min ute's hesitation, saw tho point, and they went rapidly aloft and westward together. With a superb sweep of their wings they rose and rose, so near each other that the tips of their pinions seemed to touch. Wo leaped upon our horses and gal loped after them. Tho horror of it was upon us. I was sorry that I had challenged my rival. Tho girl loved him, and why should I have been so selfish as to Interfoio with his happi ness? I vowed that If he ever camo down from his mad flight In tho heav ens I would bo his friend forever. Tho condors rose tirelessly. They were a halt mile, a mllo high. They became two tiny specks In tho bluo South American sky. Almaraz looked like a toy like a doll. Yet with sub lime nervo ho stood upright In tho basket and guided as best ho could his feathered steeds toward tho dis tant crags. I soon outstripped the t others, for my horse was a thoroughbred. Mllo after mllo we went, nnd still I kept In sight of the dizzy voyngcis. With my field glasses, which I put to my eyes now and then, I could see them plainly. As the harnessed condors nenred tho first crag, I could see Almaraz above me, waving his white hnndker chlof at me, and I answered him with shouts which he doubtless did not hear. Tho condors circled with ma jestic grace and then swooped down and settled upon tho crag a moro splinter .that pierced tho heavens. Tho basket bumped against tho Btonc, and was still. It seemed almost that Almaraz was doomed. Ho was 1,500 feet above tho earth, whoio no human help could reach him. My glasses surveyed him, and I saw him wave his handkerchief again. Then I saw him tako his revolver from his pocket, and pointing It nt tho near cat bird tired. I could not hear tho sound, but I saw tho puff of whlto smoke and un derstood hls.plnn. lie had killed the smallor bird. It toppled over toward him. Tho weight of tho dead bird and ot tho baskot was too much for tho big condor. Ho clung to tho crag for a mluuto and then dropped off and attempted to fly. Down tho huge ovll bird enmo Hko a parachute, boating tho nlr with his mighty wings down, down, down. I galloped my tired horso around in cir cles and shouted mud words of on couragemont. Strango as It may seem Almaraz reached tho ground In safoty, stoppod from tho basket In front of mo, smiled, waved his hand politely and fainted. Ho married Iiiojs at tho haclonda that afternoon. Ho deserved his hap pinesB. And to think how mistaken n man rouy bo! I had sized up that Chilian cm a uwuulibucklor and u coward.
