The trade in snake skins does not at first thought suggest Itself as one requiring large capital or very com plicated organization, at least in this country. But In the far East things are different. The Java Reptile Skin Company has been incorporated In the Island of that name, with a cap ital of $40,000. Branches will be es tablished In a number of places throughout the Island, where live snakes will be purchased from native hunters. Great stress Is placed upon buying the reptiles alive,- since the skin Is much more valuable If the snake Is skinned while It is yet liv ing. Live snakes 12 to 18 feet In length bring good prices, while dead snakes are a drug on the market. The woman who wears with pride a handsome snake-skin card case will probably not give a thought to the fact that the material was stripped from a living snake. Ever since the episode in Eden some few thousands of years ago snakes have apparently had no right to having their feelings considered. "PUT ME OFF AT TO-LE-DO, I'M ON MY WAY TO THE BIG LAND SHOW!" Farmers and City Folks From All Parts of Michigan and Ohio Will Attend the Greatest of All Land Expositions at Toledo, November 23 to December 5. The smallest bird Is a species of humming bird common in Mexico and Central America. It is not as largo as a blue-bottle fly. It Is the splendid absorption in life that makes one forget the flight of time. This is why God Is never weary; He Is bo Interested In His work. My friend is dear, but my enemy Is also useful; the friend shows me what I can do, the enemy shows me what I ought to do. Schiller. Two things operate to rid us of a friend pleasure In which we do not need thenv and trouble In which wo do need them. Petlt-Senn. So that a person may take his ease while In a bath tub a Callfornlan has Invented a sprang virp hndrest, to be hung on one end of the tub. as well as the neighboring states and Canada. Practical experiments to determine soil values, seed-testing and other demonstrations will be conducted by state and national experts. Exhibits will be made of the latest inventions for making farm life more comfort able, enjoyable and profitable. Daily concerts by the famous Royal Kilties Band of Cana'da will prove a pleasing diversion. Toledo was selected as the place for the big Ohio and Michigan Show because it can be so easily reached from all directions, because of the splendid hotel and restaurant accom modations, and on account of the un cqualcd facilities provided by the great Terminal Auditorium, which is unequaled by even the famous Madi son Square Garden rf New York City in the amount of ground floor space. The Land Show has been endorsed by many prominent public bodies and individuals, including the Ohio State Agricultural Commission. Governor Cox of Ohio, Toledo Real Estate Board and Toledo Commerce Club. An added attraction for many farm ers will be the Annual Meeting of .the Ohio State Agricultural Society, which will be held in Toledo during the Land Show. The list of exhibit ors who have already contracted for space shows that the leading makers of agricultural implements will be represented. This will be an up-to-the-minute, comolete agricultural ex position, full of pleasure and profit for all who attend. A Little Scare. Perclval came running to his grandma one day, asking for a drink of water. "Quick, quick, grandma," he said, "give me a drink of water, quick!" After he got his drink, he said: "The reason that I was In such a hurry, I thought I swallowed a worm while eating an apple and I wanted to drown It." HUNTING DUCKS' IN JAPAN Captured with Nets After Being De coyed Into Ditches. The following description of an en joyable, and at the same time lucra tive, method of catching wild ducks in the air by means of nets will Interest sportsmen. This sport, writes A. H. Exnor in the "Shooting Times," is in vogue in Japan, which abounds In all kinds of water fowls, especially wild ducks. Even in Tokyo itself many thousands of these birds make the moats round the castle their home dur ing the winter. The way the Japanese pursue this sport is as follows: From a lake sur rounded by bamboo, brushwood, or dykes, a number of ditches run out. At a short distance from the lake they are bent In their direction so as to pre vent the ducks in the lake seeing what' is going on at the end of the ditch. The last part of the ditch Is walled la by a somewhat more elevated dyke; this to hide the sportsmen, posted alongside the ditch, from the ducks easy pray to an agile sportsman. Dur ing the whole chase the sportsmen are acting quietly, so as not to frighten the other birds away. In some of the bigger estates of Japanese noblemen where there are large lakes, special telephone lines are laid from the observation hut to the rendezvous hall of the party, and the sportsmen can thus promptly be ad vised by the watchers when and where the wild ducks have entered a ditch. This kind of duck catching with the net is an original Japanese sport, and the writer does not think it is much known in Europe. A CERTAIN RESULTS Many a Grateful Reader KnowB Ho Sure They Are.
