OUR CQUtTRY : Firpt
Last and Forever.
Chairman Noonan'u press censor
ship seems to be in ilrst-cluss working
order.
Oosi PAUL lias the larger amount
of doflance, but Oom Jolin linn the
greater number of troops.
Some of the Democratic candidates
base their plea for support on party
regularity. Yet a great many Denio-cratB-think
the capture of a nomina
tion by despotic rulings and repudia
tion of the Chicago platform, suffi
ciently irregular to be condemned at
the polls.
Kkpoiits of an uprising among the
Democratic voters of the county is
not very encouraging to Chairman
Noonan. A convention controlled by
candidates who repudiate the doc
trines of William Jennings Bryan is
liaro'iy an incentive to enthuse the
rank aod file of the party.
For some reason "Corporal"
Sowden, of Lehigh county, is not
doing any work on the stump, al
though he offered his services early
in the campaign. The venerable Mr.
Jenks is also missed this year. Mr.
Creasy is, however, being worked full
time and is doing three men's work.
The action of the New 'York
Central railroad in deciding to use
anthracite coal exclusively in the
future will probably induce Other
companies to also discontinue the use
of bituminous coal for their passenger
traffic. From interviews with the
presidents of the great railway cor
porations, it seems that beneficial
effects are sure to follow. Even as it
is, however, the general demand for
anthracite is at present very much
greater than the supply.
Brave flen, These I
The men now in control of the
Democratic organization in this
county, whose noble lubors in behalf
of Palmer and Buckner, the nomi
nees of the gold wing of the Democ
racy in 1800, were so ill rewarded,
stands yet upon the breathless heights
of principle. Their heroic souls, this
year, are filled with stern JefTer
sonian virtue.
It will be remembered that the gen
tlemen, at least a majority of them,
now seeking the votes of loyal Bryan
Democrats, were so unbending in
their anti-silver convictions that they
refused to allow an endorsement of
the Chicago platform to be presented
at the recent Democratic county con
vention. Scan the list of men now
in control of the party organization
men who made the platform and
dictated the nominations and you
will find In the fore front those who
refused to support the Democratic
national ticket In 1800. This year,
however, those bolters pine for Demo
cratic harmony and union. Why ?
They are candidates for ofllce them
selves, and want the silver lion and
the gold lion to lie down together.
In view of the faot that tlieSohuyl
kill Democrats who don't believe in
silver are an Inconsiderable minority,
the proposition to give the "traitors
of '86" all the offices with fat salaries
is almost pathetic In its modesty. It
is painful to have to know that there
are thousands of loyal supporters of
William Jennings Bryan in this
county who will make it convenient
to be absent from the polls In Novem
ber, as a rebuke to the men who de
serted the Democratic candidate for
President, and have now the audaolty
to seek Democratic votes on the plea
of party regularity. But that is the
situation.

C'o.'g weekly review of trndo says: In
most linos of business continues to ox
imnd, though In somo there are signs
that buying hns been checked, either
became prices have outrun tho views
of buyers or because recent purchases
have been so heavy that nobody Is left
in need. I'rlcos hre still advancing In
almost every line, supported by rising
price of mnterlnlH, and works every
where are Btlll crowded to their ut
most capacity, while at many points it
Is found hard to get enough competent
hands. But tho volume of business ex
I ressed In values rises much more
than prices, showing a romarkable In
crease in quantities of goods ex
changed. The outbreak of tho war in South
Africa hns brought no such changes
as many feared. In England tho mar
kets have treated It as an event al
ready over discounted, and relations
v.ith this country were not appreciably
affected. The outgo of cotton is just
now checked, but of other great
utaplos and manufactured products tho
foreign demand Is surprisingly sus
tained. Bradstreet's review says: More nonr
ly, perhaps, than over boforo does the
volume of general trade nnd Industry
tax existing transportation facilities
handling the same. From nearly all
parts of tho country, but particularly
from the wost and south, come reports
of enr scarcity. Some of this con
gestion seems to bo tho result of a
diversion of traffic ordinarily carried
on by water routes to already crowded
railroads.

Canton, Miss.. Oct. 21. The Uttlo

burned to a crisp, while tho citizens
looked on In grim silence. Another
negro. Bob Smith, was saved Just in
the nick of time, as some doubt ex

The Gambrel tragedy occurred early
Thursday morning, apd it was first
thought that the fjio was the result of

established beyond doubt that the fam

fired.
Posses were immediately formed to

Discovered by a Woman.
Another great discovery has been made,
and that too, by a lady in this country. "Dis
ease fastened its clutches Uon her and for
seven years she withstood its severest .tests,
but her vital organs were nndermined and
death seemed imminent, For three months
she coughed Incessantly, and could not sleep.
She finally discovered a way to recovery, by
purchasing of us a bottle of Dr. King's New
Discovery for Consumption, and was so much
relieved on taking first dose, that she slept all
nightj and with two bottles, has been ab
solutely cured. Her name Is Mrs. Luther
