Key' Letter.
SOME PERTINENT OPINIONS EX

Proyosetl Improvement of the Missis
sippi Elver.
Washington. May 30. With reference
to the letter of Postmaster-General Key,
Oen. Debrell. of Tenness-c, said: We re
gard it ns a direct attack upon us, the
Tennessee Democrats in the house. It is :i
piece of impertinence on the part of Postmaster-!
Jeneral Key to attempt to dictate
to our friends in Tennessee. It is mi insult
and an outrage to us. It is simply advis
ing the people of our states to send Repub
licans in our places. Hut I expected some
thing of this kind. It was reported that
Mr. Key was invited to leave the cabinet,
and I predicted he would do something of
this kind. In my opinion that letter was
prepared for Mr. Key, and In-was to sign
it or leave the cabinet. He has killed
himself with his party, and is now working
with the balance of the administration for
the Republicans. When he says we favor
revolutions, he tells what is not true, and
In- knows it.
Mtt. mirsK
savs: 1 lie iKiot was itpatteii to kick .nr.
Key out of the cabinet, and the price he
paid to remain was the signing of this let
ter. It was written, perhaps, by Mr. Sher
man. It will not have any effect in Ten

cratic proclamations from this quarter.

said: Oh, it amounts to nothing. The
only signs of a revolutionary tendency or of
Mexicnni.ation that I have s-en is this God

by any notice. Mr. Key has no intiu-nce

Mil. VUKIIKKS
denounced the letter, and said that the the
ory of revolution mni Mexicanixation was
nothing but a farce: that all the talk of
this kind grew out of a movement to in
.cstigatc frauds for the purpose of protect
ing the country against such outrages in
the future. It was absurd. He criticised
the Stephens letter very sharply.
sKNATtill HAVI1) HAMS
said he considered this a great mistake on
the part of Mr. Key. He has cut himself
otf faniii i his party. This letter will have a
had etl'ect among Democrats in the north,
and unify the northern Republicans. It
will have no etl'ect in the sotit. until even in
Tennessee, because Mr. Key has lost favor
with his people by attempting to condone
what the Democrats believe to be a great
fraud. He thought the letter of Mr. Step
hens would have more elt'-ct, especially in
the south, where he is esteemed.
A I'UUMISKNT IlKMiK ItATlC MKM1IKII
remarked that the Key letter would not
have any influence, becnuse it was palpably
a plea for bread; that Key had got all he
could ami was trying to hold on to it.
Mil. CIIAUI.KS K1ISTKH

manding that Mr. Key should leave the
cabinet are entirely satisliod and want him
to remain. He has cut himself loose from
the Democratic party.

Sad Termination of a Pleaslmf Event
in Central Park.
Nkw Youk, May 30. The. following is
a correct account of the accident yesterday
to Mr. Win. Cullen Hrvanl: The exercises
in Central park yesterday afternoon, on tlm
occasion of the unveiling of the bust of
Mazzini. occupied between one and two
hours, nt that part of the day when the
least air was stirring and the sun gave its
most intense heat. During a good deal of
that time Mr. Uryant was in his place in
the speakers' stand, with his head uncover
ed, sutTcring like many n younger man in
the assembly from the exposure, though
making no complaint.
At the close of the open air exercises. In1
was invited by (ten. James G. Wilson to
his house in East Seventy-fourth street, to
rest after the exertions of the afternoon and

d-stination, Geu. Wilson rans ahead up
the steps to open the front door for his
guest, who followed at a slower puce, in
duced by fatigue. Mr. Hryant suddenly
seemed to have lost consciousness, and in
the act of raising one foot to enter the ves
tibule, fell backward on a broad stone,
striking his head with violence. He was
immediately lifted and carried into the
house, where he was laid on a sofa, a dis
patch being sent to his family physician.
As soon as it was thought prudent lie
was removed in a carriage to his own house,
No. 24 West Sixteenth' street. Dr. Gray,
his physician, came as quickly as possible,
made an examination, and after hearing an
account of the accident, expressed great
suprisi; at the absence of any bruise or cut
on the patient's head. He was of the opin
ion that Mr. Bryant's swoon was of the
kind known to the medical profession as
syncope, caused by a diminution or inter
ruption of the motion of the heart and of
respiration, accompanied with a suspension
of the action of the brain ami a temporary
loss of sensation, volition and other fac
ulties. It is thought that a more severe injury
than that which actually befell him was
averted, possibly, by the thickness and soft
ness of his felt hat, which saved his head
from much of the force of the blow.
Dr. Carnochan was called into consulta
tion by Dr. Grnv on the surgical aspects
of the case, and their joint conclusion was
that no serious harm to the brain is to lie
feared, though what other internal dis
orders may have been caused by the fa'l
it was impossible at that time t.
judge, since Mr. Hryant resisted ever- ef
fort to examine him by physical contact.
During the night he was restless and in an
only partly conscious state, not appearing to
recognize persons about him, but evidently
having plenty of will powvr and some phy
sical strength at his command. His friend,
J. A. Graham, who remained at his side as
n watcher, attempted once or twice to feel
his pulse, but at each attempt he woii'.d
thaw his wrist away, and linally. with an
impetuous gesture, threw Mr. Graham's
hand entirely away from him.

H't thinks he will recover, but is still an

so many fresh ones we counted them
again this afternoon. They were no
