. Memphis, Sept. 0. Your correspondent
has just returned from a pleasant drive out
to Camp Father Mathcw, probably the hap
piest set of people under the circumstances
to bo found in any summer resort. They
are at present free from any character of
sickness, and under the rigid regulations
observed by mutual consent arc not likely
to hove any this season. There has been
quite a change in temperature in the past
six hours so that at this writing (0 p. m.)
windows are closed and , thick clothing is
necessary for comfort. Indications lire fa
vorable for a cold lain trom which may be
expected aa increase in the list ot dead.
Tho official list of new cases at the health
office to-day numbers twenty persons, ot
which twelve arc whites.
Tho citizens' safety committee had a
meeting nt which a general system of econ
omy was discussed, particularly as regards
the expense of tho camps. It was also urged
that the military now on day duty was a
heavy and useless expense. Duiingthc dis
cussion, members of the Howard association
present stated that that organization would
be compelled to close their supply depot, if
material aid did not come to hand in the
next forty-eight hours. This would leave
the subsistence of tho nurses and convales
cents incumbent on, tho citizens' committee,
the Howards only paying nurses, physicians
and drug bills. The mat'er went over
without action, to be further considered
to-morrow. The Howards will publish tho
following change in their department to
morrow: Resolved that from and after this duto
the Howard association will not provide for
any but yellow-fever patients, and that our
physicians and visitors be and hereby are
instructed to relieve nil nurses otherwise en
gaged. Resolved that the Howard visitors and
physieiaus be and arc hereby instructed not
to furnish any supplies of any kind what
ever but to yellow-fever patients.

A BIG RAT STORY. '
The Columbus (Ga.) Enquirer tells tho
following rat story: Some years ago its
informant was living at a farnij tho barn of
which was burned, nnd with it many rats.
Some of the animals escaped, however, with
serious injuries, nnd took up their abode
under piles of lumber near a creek. At
this place one came out, drank and returned
with a straw in his mouth. Walking up to
tho lumber he pushed this straw under, and
presently another came out, holding tho
other end of the straw. The first then
started tor the creek, leading his compan
ion (which was afterward found to be blind)
to the water. After tho blind one had
drank they returned in tho same manner.
