The DtSinet is on her way down from St. Louis for Paducah. Her captain is the t'rnial Jno. A. Kroner. The Silver Cloud is to come out from Evansville this week and take the Rapidan's day ia the Tennessee. The James Howard leaves to-day. She remains here until the arrival of the train and then shoves out for New Orleans. The Ouachita Relic left this city yester day for Memphis with a hig crowd of peo ple. She has been at Mound City all sum mer repairing. The Anchor Line, Grand Tower got away from St. Louis for Memphis with full pas senger and freight showings. c is due here to-day. Wc hear that the boat which is to take the place ot the Fisk in the Cairo and Paducah trade, is now being constructed at Louisville. She will be a ttern wheeler. The Hard Cash from out of White river was at our wharf yesterday. She left for St. Louis yesterday at, 11 :20 a. m. ('apt. Ed.' Pastel is in command. The J. 'iT. Cannon is reported to have made the following good time to Carroll ton, Saturday evening, 25 minutes and 12 seconds. The Natchez, who backed out about the same time as the Cannon, made Carrollton in 23 minutes and 10 seconds. The taftcettime on recod ever made from New Orleans to Carrollton was in the tare between the Lee and the Natchez; that was 25 minutes and 30 seconfls. Everywhere along the river there appears to be mo end of complaint about the gov ernment boats whoso duty it is to report snags and other dangerous obstructions from the track of commerce. The ?t. Louis llepublicaii very properly remarks that the safety of life and property depends, to a great extent, upon the work of this depart ment.1 The boats-go into commission at n season of the year when the stage of the river presents the possibility of accom plishing tlie purpose ; the time for begin ning is about tho period at which they cud their season, that is at the approach of a low stage of the river. The beacon-bouts aro also a source of complaint. Then why not com bine tho two? fhe snag boats find, or rattier should find, the obstruction. Should it be impracticable to remove it, how easy a matter it would bo to, then and there, place the lights in a position to prevent the boats from striking it. Again, in tier soundings aud other methods of ascertaining the whereabouts of hidden obstructions she finds the channel and its course, She should change the lights accordingly and at a much lighter expense than that which at tends tho work as it is done at present. GLRAMNOB FROM KXCHANtiKN. The Courier-Journal says: "Here is something we can't soe through. Conduo tore, engineers and brukemen on rallroadi are nut compelled to pay a big license every year by Uncta Sam. Why do cap tains, engineers, pilots and matci of jteamboat have to pay for a like privilege? Itailroadu don't have to pay for the use of atreeta for depots, tracks, etc. Why are steamboat compelled to pay big whaif, age for - bringing business hero. Uncle 8am don't charge rallroada for ob structing his rivers with bridges. Why should he chargo steamboats canal tollage? Tho people are taxed to build railroads. Tho people liavo never been asked for taxes to bui hi steamboats; and yet, whilo they derive no benefit from the railroads, they will do all they can to impose big wharfage upon steamboats, which are the business, life and salvation of their city.
