Feoria special says Thomas Neil, a local
coal king, whose operations have beui very
large, left the city some days since, and as
he was known to be heavily involved
much excitement has been felt. It culmin
ated to-day in the announcement that Neil
had failed for from $200,000 to -f:iOO,000-probably
the latter amount. He was wide

benevolent, conscientious, ' upright num.
His whereabouts are .still unknown.

New York, Dec. 18. An almost miracu
lous escape from panic was'had iu the Park
theatre during the performance this even
ing, which w.n attended by seven hundred
persons. The trcket taker at the eutrunce
discovered fire in the vestibule eating its
way through the floor. He slipped around
to the entrances and opened all the doors
and then to the stage and passed the word
to L'mmclt, who was declaiming to the au
dience. Emmctt paused and in an uncon
cerned way said that he was told there was
tire next door, and that perhaps the audi
ence had better pass out by the side en
trance. A policeman iu the rear lifted up
his voice in a most reassuring way and said
that there was no danger. Then he sat
down with his back to the door that opened
into the blazing vestibule. The audience
passed out the side doors iu just six min
utes. The lire was soon put out.

CuicAiio, Df.c. 18. Suspicions of a
fuul murder have been aroused at New
Canton, twenty mik south of Quincy, by
Jinding the house recently occupied by u
man and his wife entirely deserted, but
with all the furniture intact and blood on
the various articles about the place. Cries
of murder were heard coming from tho
house last Thursday night but no investi
gation was made until yesterday. It was
found that a neighbor who had threatened
their lives had shipped his goods the same
time to Lcirnine in this county. The theory
is that he packed the I mm lies of his victims
iu casks and took them along. Excite
ment is intense in that section, and men
are scouring the country iu search of the
remains and of the supposed murder.
