GENERAL LOCAL NEWS.
Go to Cotiiingb' for sheet unisic. A
liirge invoice ol a'.l descriptions juct re
ceived. Not the least interesting bection of the
procession, yotfrhy, was tliat composed
of colored civic societies of Cairo. The
members were well drese l, marched well
and lxked well.
TVo hundred and fifty new pieces of
vocal and instrumental music just received
at Comings'.
Of cour we have, in our account of
the Grant reception, committed many sins
of omision. Uut let anybody who may
feel disposed to complain, sit down and
write the sumo number of words after night
fall, and he will very likely be held an
swerable, not only for sins of omission, but
of commission also.
"Another Richmond in the field'' for Po
lice Magistrate-, as will be 6een in the an
nouncement of Elder T. J. Shores. The El
der is better known probably, than any
other colored man in the city, and can rally
to his support a good following of voters
enough to make it warm for the other can
didattsifhc don't knock the persimmon.
Among our distinguished visitors, yes
terday, we noted the presence of C'ui. W.
R. Brown, of Metropolis ; Ike Kelly, of Da
Qioin; W. W. Rarr, Hon. F.E.Albright
and J. R. May ham, of MurphyEboro; Hon.
Thos. S. Ridgway, of Shawneetown; Mayor
Friganza, of Mound City; John II. Bar
ton, A. Ackerman, Prof. Allyn and Dr. Ed
wards, of Carbondale; Dr. Wardner, of
Anna; T. F. Bouton, of Jonesboro, and
"Old Trim," of Dongola.
Wt hare been requested (and as the
request is in the line of inclination, we
cheerfully comply) to thank, in the name
of our people, the members of the Rough
and Ready and Delta City fire companies,
the Normal Cadets, of Carljondale, and ti e
National Guards, of Anna, for taking part
in the procession in honor of General
Grant's presence in Cairo. All the compa
nies made a good appiarance the military
being well equipped and uniformed and
marching with the precision of veterans.
and the fire companies betraying to the
multitude of lookers-on that they arc what
they are, as fearless, as industrious and
willing a set of tire-fighters as ever engi
neered a nozzle or "came down upon the
orakes."
WHY THE EQUITABLE SHOULD BE
RECOMMENDED TO THE PUBLIC
ABOVE EVERY OTHER COMPANY.
First : Because the policy holder secures
acsoiute miiemiiitv ami win in tlie long run
get more lor his m ney than l;e can else
where.
Secoud: Because every policy becomes
iXDisri'TAiiLu" by the terms of the con
tract after three years.
Third : Because every just claim is paid
promptly aud in full. The society paid in
1 bT9 nearly five millions in death claims.
dividends and endowments, and closed its
books without a sinirlc contested claim.
Fourth : Because the society's insurance
contract contains nor aduous, no technical
clauses, and is clearly and concisely ex
pressed.
Fifth : Because of the society's financial
strength ami flourishing business. Its new
issues of 1879 amounted to $20,50(1,000
and "increase" in one year of over "five
millions."
Sixth: Because the Equitable has a
surplus of $7,550,000 or $12,300 for every
$100.00 ot liability.
For other good reasons too numerous to
enumerate in this issue of the paper, and
for explanations of the wonderful workings
and results of the tontine plan, apply to II,
Knov'les, special agent, and E. A. Bur
nett, local agent, at Cairo.
