TRAOEDY IN CALIFORNIA.
San Francisco, May 11. The contest
between the railroad company and settlers
ou lauds claimed by the company in what
is known as Mussel slough district, iu Tu
lare and Fresno counties, culminated to-day
in a tragedy. United States Marshal Paole
left here a day or two ago to serve writs of
ejectment ou certain settlers by virtue of a
decision of the circuit court in favor of the
railroad company. This afternoon Deputy
Marshal Worth of this city received the fol
lowing dispatch trotu Marshal Paole: l'Itt
attempting to execute the warrant four men
were kilted and two wounded." No further
particulars yet received. The settlers are
handed together for mutual protection, and
express a determination to resist all attempts
The following was received by the com
pany from Paole this afternoon :
l,I put Hart in possession of the tract. Ho
and Crow followed Clark aud I to another
sectiou and met defendent, Strorer, who
talked with Crow about compromising.
Strorer rode olf, saying ho would sec his
partner, and what he thought of it. Soon
after he left about forty mounted men made
tewards us. " I left my buggy with Clark
aud advanced to meet them. After a brief
conversation with them they suddenly cov
ered me with rifles aud pistols. Some of
them rode rapidly towards tho wagon occu
pied by Crow and Ihrt. One of the riders
struck my foot aud throw mo dowu. Am
not certain who fired Urst. Think three,
possibly four settlers were killed and one
or two wounded. Hart was shot in the
groin, tatally, I think. Clark and myself
are not hurt." Signo ll A..W. Paolk,
NEW SERIES NO. 270.
It is further learned that after the shoot
ing occurred the settlers ran the telegraph
operator at 'Kinford depot, who is also
agent of the railroad company, out of town,
and there is no telegraphic communication
with that place bince noon, but news is mo
mentarily expected from runners dispatched
to the nearest station on the main line of
the Southern Pacific.
