rived. The "pivotal" Bepuhlicau state con
vention is revolving, and the proceedings
up to the hour of the noon recess, although
not as terrific in their explosive character
as many may have anticipated, were evi
dences of a feeling of outraged innocence
displayed l.y the anti-Grant men, which
hid revolutionary desires on the part of
many of the anti -Grant patriots. These
feelings wire adroitly concealed
by the anti-Grantites, while Long
Jones of the opposition and chairman of
the state central commute lost his head.
At 12 .00 Mr. Jones, chairman of the cen
tral committee, culled the convention to or
der, when prayer was offered by Bev. Mr.
Nourae of this city, who had the extremely
bad taste to make a political speech out of

round of applause, as the delegates were

The call was read, when Mr. Jones in
formed the convention that he had been
instructed by the state committee to name
Mr. Internal Berenue Commissioner Green
B. Bautu of Bop.) county, as temporary
chairman of the convention.
As soon as the secretaries were appointed,
Dr. Bobbins, of Adams county, an intelli
gent anti-Grant delegate', opened the ball
by saying he saw vacant seats on the floor
of the convention (the Grant and anti-Grant
men occupying the galleries tit each ju.1 of
the hall), and desired to know by what
right they had been excluded from the con
vention Hour by the central committee,
pitching into that organization generally
and declaring such action without parallel
and precedent.

without votes, to all contestants as soon as
the committee on credentials had been
appointed. Motions and counter motions
were made during which, at times, the
wildest confusion prevailed, and several of
the leaders of the contestants from Cook
county came down from the galleries und
took scats on the floor of the convention,
when finally a motion ordering till the con
gressional districts c ilh'd save the Second.
Cook county, for the purpose of naming a
member from each a committeeman on
ere lentials, w is adopted after much nian
o'uvi'ing on the part of the anti-Grant men.
COM MI'I'IEE ON CREDENTIALS.
This committee stands Ellsworth, Grant.
Sheridan, Burke, Moore, Chews, Nollman,
Brown and Graham, ii for Grant; while
Ferry, llurlbut, Beurdsley, Emery, Ilamil1
ton, Branson and Prince, 7, ure for Blaine,
and Smith and lla'.ber, 2, are for Wash
burne, making a tie vote by combining the
opposition to Grant. At this point a mo
tion to adjourn was entered by Mr. Wright,
of Boone, when Senator Logan secured the
floor and asked to have it withdrawn to
enable him to submit a resolution. This
was refused by Wright, when the conven
tion went into a regular bear dance, the
confusion betng very great, and it looked
as if an open revolt would ensue. The
vote was taken on adjoin nuient, the con
vention refusing to adjourn by 21$ yeas to

was the first kaockdowu and blood for the
Gruntites. It was a fair test vote, nnd does
not represent nil the Grant strength. Sen

Which pledges all members of contesting
delegations to abide by tho action of tho
conventiou in determining who are entitle,
to seats from the contested districts. After
a weak struggle of resistance on the part
of the anti-Grant folks the resolution was
adopted with a yell. Logan swore in the
convention and tho convention adjourned
until 5 p. tu,
Tho convention reassembled at 5 p. m.
After waiting some time its Temporary
Chairman Baum, as the committee on cre
dentials were not ready to report, suggested
that a recess be taken. Frank Lumbanl
was loudly called for and after singing
"Old Shady" in which be adroitly rung in
the name of Grant, the convention went
into a delirium of applause and finally ad
journed until 8 this evening.

sion of that committee to-day will not stay
there, where the managers of tho conven
tion hoped to keep it.
On the Cook county muddle tho com
mittee stands 8 to 0, but in the Greene
county contest tho Grant men in order to bo
consistent and save their frieuds from Cook
have to vote to seat the Blaine delegate's as
they bolted in Greene county whHe Grant- '
ites held possession of the regular conven
tion. The committee stands ten to admit
the Blaine delegates from Greene to eight
against. Tho Cook county Grantites are
ready to pledge themselves to abide the ac
tion of the convention in deciding their con
test as Logan's resolution demands, and as
the committee on credentials, by a vote of
J to 8 asks, while the Farwell hall delega
tion have refused, so far, to answer tho
call of the committee on this cpuestion. If
they continue to refuse their claims to
seats will be ignored by a majority of tho
committeY. The Palmer house Grant de
legates from Cook will be recommended for
seats, and a minority report claiming seat
for the Farwell hall delegates will also go
into the convention and there be fought out.

As was shown by a test vote on the ad
journment motion at noou to-day before
Logans resolution was adopted, standing
34!) against 24S for adjournment.
The anti-Grant men are very indignant
that Senator Logan should act as a delegate
trom Jackson county, when his residence is
in Chicago, and say that he is acting with
out credentials. An anti-Grant credential
committeeman says there are no creden
tials before that committee showing that
Logan is a delegate.
EVENING SESSION.
The convention was called to order at
twenty minutes of !) p. m. J. M. Deards
ley, secretary of the committee on creden
tials, presented himself before the conven
tion, stating that all the counties were
pro-ierly represented and entitled to seats
save Cook and Greene, and asked for fur
ther time. Ho also stated that the com
mittee would not bo able to make nuy re
port in relation to the two last named
counties until to-morrow morning. The
convention received and adopted the re
port and gave the committee further time.

THE FARWELL HALL DELEHAT3S
Held a meeting to-night at which it was
determined to send a committee to tho com
mittee on credentials, informing it that
they were ready to be heard as to their
claims to seats, but did not propose to be
bound by Senator Logan's swearing in reso
lution. About this time Mr. Farwell ap
peared in the hall and informed the meet
ing that the committee on credentials had
adopted tt resolution declaring that contest
ing delegations would have to submit to Lo
gan's resolution before their claims
could be considered and that
another resolution .was then
before and likely to bc. adopted by the
committee on credentials declaring that un
less the Farwell hall delegates agreed to
submit to the terms of the Logan resolution
their claims would not be considered by
the committee ou credentials, and advised
that the committee to be sent before the
credential committee bo given discretionary
powers, and that the Farwell hall delega
tes had better make up their minds to take
what they could gut. The meeting accept
ed Mr. Farwell's advice and so instructed
its committee. This practically breaks up
the opposition to Grant and gives him tho
delegates to the Chicago convention.
The committee on credentials spent tho
evening iu considering tho Greeno county
contested case, finally concluded to admit
both tho Grant and Blaine delegates, giving
one-half vote to each delegate, and nd
journed till morning. If the Cook county
contestants are settled ou the same basis,
the Grant people will get more than they
claimed, which no doubt was the cause ot
the settlement of Greene iu tho maimer
named,
