THE I'.LISO'S DEMOCRATIC COSVESTION-H
Spp.i.s'G field, 111., June 8. The large
and early arrival of delegates anil promi
nent gentlemen to attend the Democratic
state convention of Thursday, indicates
that that meeting will be the largest held
in this state tor many years, The trains to
day brought in large numbers, and the con
vention is not held until day after to-morrow.
The Chicago and larger delegations
have not araived yet. Among the more
prominent gentlemen present not already
mentioned are Hons. S. S. Marshall, of
Hamilton, Jas. R. Edeu, of Moultrie, O. B.
Ficklin, of Coles, T. W. McNeeley, of Men
ard, chairman ot the state central commit
tee; Judge Crawford, of Union, Judge Van
devere. of Christian, R. L. McKintry, of Ed
gar, J. S. Drake of Rock Island. Among
the prominent candidates for governor are
mentioned, Lyman Trarabu'.l and Carter
II. Harrison of Cook, John F. Farnsworth
of Kane, Gen. Parsons of Clay, John II.
Oberly of Alexander, Wm. Drown of Mor
gan, Gen. Blade of Vermillion and Senator
Lee of Peoria. It is thought that among
this number will also be found the candi
dates for lieutenant-governor. Dr. Starkel
of St. Clair seems to be the only candidate
for auditor, A. Orondortf of Sangamon for
tor secretary of state, and Thomas Butter-
worth of Winnebago for state treasurer,
while Chas. Dunham of Henry, A. E
Wheat of Adams and R. L. McKialey of
Edgar are each in turn spoken favorably of
for attorney-general. Of course as the
time of the convention approaches more
candidates, and in some instances the
lucky ones, will appear on the scene
The fight of the convention will be
ever the delegates to Cincinnati
The Morrison men seem inclined to insist
on instructions for their man, but it is quite
certain now as gathered from expressions
of delegates already here that it is the pur
pose to scad th; best possible delegation to
the convention and have them go entirely
uninstructed. Tilden, Seymour, Palmer
and Morrison lor president have more
friends than any one else and it is quite
likely a delegation will go to Cincinnati
representing these gentlemen. Seymour's
strengtli will come from Chicago and the
northern end of the state, while Tilden's is
general throughout the state and Morrison
from Southern Illinois. Judge Davis has
little or no following at this time, as Dem
ocrats do not seem inclined to be for a man
who has always insisted that he was not a
Democrat, and present appearances indi
cate that the convention of uext Thursday
will refuse to resort to expedients and will
support no one but a straight out Democrat
for any position.
DKSPEKATE CHARACTER KILLED.
McRPitrsBoito. III., Juue 8. Our usually
quiet city was thrown iuto a fevr of ex
citemeut about ten o'clock last night by
the report that Juo. Davidson, a niau who
has enjoyed the reputatiou for some time of
being a desperate character, had rieen kill
ed by otie Jerry Kane. Your correspondent
hastened to the scene of bloodshed aud
found the dead man lying on the sidewalk
with a small kuife wound in the breast
which uu autopsy showed had penetrated
the heart. The particulars of tho affair as
far as we could ascertain were, that David
son had been drinking a great deal for the
past day or two, and was "square ou his
muscle," and said he was "the best man, on
the globe." Ho weut into the saloon of P.
Sundmacher and selected Kaue as the ' pur
sou upon whom iis muscle might exhibit
itself. He struck Kano on the head, and
was proceeding to demolish him whon
Kano stabbed him with fatal result. No
one sympathized with the dead man, as he
got what has bceu expected tor years.
Eight years ago Davidson shot and killed a
man named Burns, for which enmo bo es
caped conviction. Kano is a quiet, peace
able citizen. '
HORSE THIEVES CAPTURED. - -
Mjrphtsboro, III., June 8. Two men
named Wm. Lindsey and John Needhwa t
were brought up to this city to-day on ,:
charge of horse stealing. Lindsey itolo ' '

Essick. They were captured by Willam .
in the bottom of the creek whilo in posses
sion of one horse. Lindsey confessed aod
implicated Needham. Both horses were
recovered. The affair occurred near Po-
niona in this county and the men were
brought here by Constable Ycona of that
place. After an examination they were
sent to jail to await the action of the grand .
jury.
A BAD RAILROAD WRECK.
Lafayette, Ind., June 8. Twenty-six
cars broke loose from the yards of the Lake
Erie and Western' road here last evening;
and starting down the steep grade, rtn
nearly to South Street Btation, colliding
with a heavy freight Craia with two engines
attached, standing on a side track. Tue
cars were running at the rate of about
forty miles an hour when they struck. Val
entine Zeiglcr, who was on one ot the
engines, was instantly killed. Sixteen cars
of wheat and oats in tho wild train were
utterly demolished and three engines badlj
injured. It was a very singular accident.
Damage will foot up $13,000 or $20,000.
