GETTINO'FAT.
New York, July 18. Dr. Tanner is
getting fat on his diet of ice water. To
day be tipped the beam at 139 pounds.
When ho began drinking ice water he
weighed only 133. He has only 21 pounds
more to gain before he will be as heavy as
when his fast began. Tho color of his
face has changed of late, becoming
healthy in its appearauce, but his
voice has lost the harshness it had a
few days ago. He appears to be in much
better condition every way. When he
heard that a carriage was waiting for him
at the door this morning he jumped from
his cot and trotted down stairs. He sat up
right during the drive. Prof. Ward, who
has been closely watching him, says that he
nearly gave up a few days ago, but he now
thinks he will go through his forty days'
fast all right. When asked to-day by a lady
concerning the secret of his ability
to last so long,- he eaid:
"I keep a tight reign on Tan
ner," meaning by the strength of his will
he kept himself from goiug into tho condi
tion of men who are compelled to do with
out tood. He was asked whether his rela
tives were not anxious about him, and re
plied: "I lied to keep the matter secret
from them," but added that they must have
found it out, for he had received a letter
from his sister since his fast began. His
condition to-night is favorable.
At 8:30 this evening Dr. Tanner returned
from a long ride. His pulse was 70 and
temperature 98 5-5. He felt cheery and
seemed in good spirits.
NOT TRUE.
The Cairo Sun a few days ago published
tho following :
"An Ohio Democratic paper tho Mess
enger, at Fremont is so much pleased with
the nomination of Garfield and so disgust
ed with Hancock, that it has openly re
nounced tho Democratic party aud como
out In advocacy' of Garfield. It expresses
the opinion that 'a bonu fide vote of the
American people will loudly call on Gener
al Garfield to take the reins ot government
for four years, trout March 4, 18S1.' "
And here is what the editor of the
Messenger says through the Cincinnati En
quirer of last Saturday:
Fremont, Ohio, July 0. Win. B. Krid
ler, Jun., who represented the Enquirer at
this poiut, telegraphed over the coun
try that this paper had flopped
to Garfield. The special correspondent
of the Cleveland Herald says it
was a mistake in proof, as Kriuler well
knew. The error was caused by a composi
tor chunging copy, and being overlooked in
proof. You can say that the Deuiocratia
messenger does not propose to flop,
not as long as Hancock is on our ticket,
or at any other time. You can
say that the error aud the use they made of
it will give General Hancock one thousand
majority in Sandusky county, a gain nf
over 300 per cent, over 1870. Our ticket
will be elected is what makes them catch
at such trivial matters.
Jas. M. Osiiokn, Editor Messenger.
A PERFECT HOME.
The most perfect home we ever saw was a
little house, in the sweet incense of whose
tires went no costly things. A thousand dol
lars served a year 8 living of father, ruuther
and three children. Rut tho mother was
the creator of the home; her relations with
her children wre tho most beuutiful we
have ever seen; even tho dull and common
place iniiii was lifted up and euablcd to do
good work for souls by the atmosphere
which tins woman created, fcvery inmate
of her house involuntarily looked into her
face tur tho key-note of tho day and it al
ways rang . clear. From the rose
bud or clover leaf, which in spito of her
house work, sho always found timo to put
by our plates at breakfast, down to the
story she had on hand to read in tho even
ing, there was no intermission of her in
fluence. She has always been aud always
will bo our ideal mother, wife and homo
maker. If to her quick brain, loving heart
and exquisite fuco had boon added the ap
pliance of wealth and tho enlargement of
wider culture, hers would have been abso
lutely tho ideal homo. As it was, it was
tho best wo hare ever seen.

SOUTHERN ILLINOIS NORMAL UNI
VERSITY. Carbondale, Jackson Co., 111., July 5,
The seventh academic venr nf thin i,ut;. '
tution will commence Monday, September
o, ioou, ana win continue, witn a recess of
two weeks at Christmas, till Monday May
20th, 1831. The session will bo divided
into three terms as follows, viz :
The tall term for the first Monday in
September, fifteen weeks. A recess of two
weeks.
Tho winter term begins Jan. 3d, I88lf
and continues ten weeks to March ll, 1831.
The spring term begins March 14, 1881,
and continues eleven weeks.
The special session for teachers occurs
prior to tho full term, beginning Monday, .
August second prox. and will continue five
weeks.
The same able faculty will continue to
give instruction and administer discipline
as tho last year. It is not too much o say
none abler can bo found, and tho building,
i'r"la ai u'Jiui), museum,, anu general
facilities are the best in tho country. Eight
hundred students can be accommodated.
The design is to fit young,
men and women for the
work and duty of teaching, and of course,
incidentally for all the affairs ot life. Our
students by hundreds are in the country
and are testimonials to the worth of the in
stitution and the influence of the training
they have received.
To those pledging themselves to teach in
the public schools ot tho state tuition is
free, but a charge of $3 and f 2, per term is
made for incidentals, such as paper, ink,
pens, etc., for the daily expenses of the
school. To others tuition in a nominal
sum is charged.
Access to Carbondale is easy, and the fa
cilities for board aro excellent. In good
private families the price is from $2.50 to
$3 per week. Youug people can arrange
for boarding in clubs at $2.00 and can pro- '
vide for themselves at $1.50 per week.
Citizens ot Southern Illinois will find a
school in their midst which will educate
their children better at home than it can
be done abroad, and, (taking into account
the cost ot travel,) at considerably less
prices than are promised elsewhere. Almost
any study wanted by any student enn tie
pursued every term, and certainly every
one within the year.
Carbondale is beautiful- healthful, intelli
gent and moral. No better place in the
United States can lo found for a school and
every attention will be given to make study
a success to those who attend with an ear
nest purpose to improve.
For further information or for circulars
