WHEN TO LEAIIN.
History very clearly proes the tact that
one is never too old to learn :
Plutarch began the study of Latin when
Socrates learned to play upon musical
instruments at a very old age.
Cato learned Greek when eighty.
Franklin began his philosophical pursuits
Dryden began the translation ol Iliad
Tudovico wrote a history of his lilc after
he reached the good old age of one hun
dred and fifteen.
Colbert, the famous minister to France,
returned to Latin and Law at sixty.
Many more could be recalled, but space
forbids, yet we should learn the lesson well
fioni these. Never put aside that which
we needs should have, because age has
worked over time so far..
In the choice of the time for reading, as
in that of the books to read, large liberty
must be given to individual needs and
habits. There is no hour of the twenty
four which may not, under certain cir
cumstances, be profitably ppent in reading.
In the lonely watches of a sleepless night,
in the precious hours of early morning, in
the busy forenoon, the leisurely afternoon,
or in the long winter evenings, whenever
the time and inclination comes, that is your
time for reading. If the inclination does
not come with the time, if the mind is
weary and the attention hrd to fix, then it
is better to lose that special time so far as
reading is concerned, and to take up some
thing else. A much shorter time chosen
under more favorable circumstances, if it
is only five minutes in a busy day, will
more than make up your loss.

Munich was the seat of the discovery of
lithography. There was a grand opera
played in the place, it was Mozart's ren
dition of "Don Juan," and tho theatre was
packed. After the performance was over,
the audience deserted the building, with
the exception of one man, and that was
Alois Senncfelder. He had a great deal to
attend to yet. He first of all examined the
stage, to sec it any sparks had ignited, and
then he retired to his room to stamp the
tickets for the next day's performance. He
held in his hand a check, which was hand
ed to him as his week's salary, a polished
whet-stone with which to sharpen razors,
and a ticket stamp, which he had moisten
ed with printers' ink. He placed the check
on the table, when all of a sudden a gust
of wind swept across the room, which
tossed the paper into the air, finally des
cending into a basin ot water.
Carefully our hero picked up his treas
ure and dried it as well as he possibly
could, and placing the stamp and whet
stone on it to press it out more smoothly, he
left lor home.
Returning the next morning he was
greatly surprised to find that the stamp had
printed very accurately upon tho damp
check. It set his mind to studying. He
mused tor a long time, and then the thought
presented itself could he not invent some
method by which he could copy tho songs
or the chorus, preventing the tedious task
of doing it by hand. So ho at once pur
chased a larger stone, and began experi
menting, until he finally succeeded in
bringing to a climax the celebrated art of
printing from stwue lithography. Anti
