romantic union. In 1813 the showman was

was attracted by remarkably beautiful

deacon in the Presbyterian church and
president of the local bank. At that
time Dan rolled in wealth and spent his
money lavishly, not only in the erection of a
magnificent house, but in adorning the
town. Ho was married to an estimable

Under the title of old Probabilities, ono
of tho most useful and valuable officers of
the U. S. Government is most widely-known.
But quite as well-known is Prof. J. II.Tice,
the meteorologist of tho Mississippi Valley,
whoso contributions to his favorite study
have given him an almost national reputa
tion. On a recent lecture tour throuh tho
Northwest, tho Professor had a narrow es
cape fnm tho serious consequences of a sud

atter concluding my course of lectures at
Burlington, Iowa, on 2lstof December last,
I was seized with a sudden attack of neu
ralgia in tho chest, giving mo excruciating
pain anil almost preventing breathing. My
pulso, usually 80, fell to 35: intenso nausea
of tho stomach succeeded, and a cold, clam
my sweat covorod my cntiro body. Tho
attending physician could do nothing to re

thought I had been using St. Jacobs Oil
with good effect for rheumatic pains I
would try it. I saturated a piece of flan
nel largo enough to cover my chest, with
tho Oil, and applied it. The relief was nl
most itistnnliiiH'oii. In ou hour, I was en
tirely free from pnin, nnd would have taken
tho train to fill nn appointment that night
in a neigh boring town, hail my friends not
dissuaded me. As it was, I took the night
train for my homo, St. Louis, and havo not
been troubled siuco.
