The City of New Orleans from tho lower
Mississippi arrived yesterday morning at
:30. She had a light trip aod lett for St
Louis at 6 a. ra.
The Cons Millar from Memphis arrived
yesterday morning at 5 o'clock. She had a
light trip. Capt. C. li. Rusiell, hercottv
mandur, was very sick with malarial fever
Dr. Dunning was called to see him, The
Millar left at 6:30 a. m.
Dr. Dunning weut up on the City of
New Orleans o attend a lady who was
dangerously ill. He will return this mora
tag.
The popular Andy Baum is the reliable
packet today for Memphis. W. F. Lamb
din passenger agent will furnish tickets at
the lowest rates.
There is some talk of a daily packet from
Cairo to Cape Girardeau. We believe it
could bo made a good paying trade.
We ate sorry to inform our readers that
Capt. II. E, Taylor of tho Qua Fowler is
very sick at his homo. Hope ho will be
able to be at his post in a short time.
Tte Hudson with Capt. John Griffith in
charge will arrivo hero this evening for
St. Louis. Passengers for the future great
ami intermediate points can secure good
rooms and and the best accommodations
offered on any man's bout by calling on
W. F. Lambdin ticket agent.
The Fannie Tatuui is still lying at St.
Louis. We are not authorized to state
what Capt. Conway intends doing, but can
say for the present "sho is not in the ring."

The line Anchor line steamer City of
Cairo arrived last evening at 2:40. She
had a good trip and departed for Vicks-
burg at 5 p. m.

Camel-Riding.
On the Western phiiii", when tho
"boys" wish a little amusement with a
"tender-foot," as a newcomer is called,
tlioy mount him on n breakini; horse.

now you go down." Judging from I ho

traveler's experience iu riding a camel,
the Arabs also have much fun in seeing
a "tender-foot" riding a cnmel for tho
first time:
Mounting the camel is not difficult,
but it has some sweet surprises fur I ho
novice. The camel lief, upon tlio ground
with nil his legs shut up under bun liko
n jaekknife. You seat yoursdf in tho
broad saddle, aud cross your legs iu
front of the pommel.
Before you are ready, something like
a private earth-quake begins under you.
The camel raises his hindquarters sud
denly, and thrown you over upon his
neck; and. before you reeovt-r from
that, ho straightens up his knees and
gives you a jerk over his tail; and,
while you are not at. all certain what
has happened, he begins to move off
with that dislocated walk which sets you
into a see-saw motion, a waving bank
ward and forward iu (lie capacious
Paddle.
Not having a hinged back for this
movement, you lash the-beast with your
koorbash to make hiin change bis gait.
He is nothing loth to do it, and at onco
starts into a high trot, w hich sends you
a foot into the air at every step, rolls
you from side to ide, drives your back
bones into your brain, and makes cas
tanets of your teeth.
Capital exercise. When you bavo
enough of it you pull up. ana humbly
inquire what is the heathen method of
riding a dromedary.
It is simple enough. Shake the loose
halter-ropu (he has neither hridUs nor
bit) against bis neck as you swing tho
whip, and tho animal at once swings in
to an oasy pace, like that of a racking
horse. But everything depends upon tho
camel. I happened to mount one that
it was a pleasure to ride, after I brought
him to the proper gait. We sailed
along over the smooth sand, with level
keel, and on cushioned feet, lint it is
hard work for the camel, this constant
planting of his spongy feet in the jdeld
ing sand.
Eoonomy Snubbed.
A German captain of artillery named
Von Khrenberg, having written a
pamphlet in which he endeavored to
show how millions of marks might bo
saved upon the German war budget nn
nually by the abolition of useless pomp
and show, has been tried by a military
court at Cassel and sentenced to three
months imprisonment, to pay the ex
penses of the trial, and to be dismissed
from the service. The court found that
the prisoner had insulted the MiniMor
of War, as well as the Imperial body
guard, of which he had contested the
utiljty.

An Australian lawver has turned doc
tor, and is accomplishing wonders. "Ho

quires no abstinence from liquors or
narcotics. His ordinary treatment of
