The "Elack Veil."
The eccentric doings of Father" Ig
natius, an ultra-Iiitualist of the English
Church, have made him notorious for
mauy years. The London Truth thus
describes one of his latest ollicial acts:
'An extraordinary scene was witnessed
at Llanthonv Abbey recently, when
I Fathcrllgnaiius admitted a novice to the
! mysteries of the 'Black Veil.' Opposite
the principal shrine was a black funeral
j bier, covered with a velvet pall, with
w hite cross and with a huge candle-stick
at each corner. The novice kuelt by its
side. After mass and a sermon, the
'Father Abbot' eat dow n in his chair by
the altar, arrayed in a gorgeous robe,
embroidered with angels and strlnts,
with a richly-jewelled mitre on his shav
en head, and a crosier in his baud.
The nuns in their grated gallery sang a
chant, while the father cut off the hair
of the novice; two acolytes holding a
towel to receive it. Then she was clad
in her nun's robes, with a crimson veil
and a wreath of Slow-en, -aud, after a
variety of intricate ceremonies, she was
placed on a throue-like chair before the
altar, and tbo whole of the monks, nuns,
sisters and acolytts themselves before
her. and as they kissed the hem of her
garment she placed her hands on their
heads. After the proce'-ion she was
laid on the bier and covered with a pall,
and the abbot pnd acolytes came for
ward in a magpie-like coslumo of black
and white, the 'father' with a high,
caul cap-like linen mitre on his head.
Then the funeral service was chanted,
tv muffled bell sounded, and the monks
bore away bier and nun behind the grat
ings." Erigham'8 Widow,
They say that Brighani Young's grave
is looking as bare and desolate as a
boUlevard now. At first, whilo her
grief whs fresh, his widow used to
march out there live abreast, and just
naturally deluge the grave with scald
ing tears, und id that time the green
grass grew luxuriantly, ami the pig
weed waved in the soft summer air; but
ns siui learned to control her emotions
the humidity of the atmosphere disap
peared, and griefs grand irrigation fail,
ed to give down.
We should learn from this that the
man who Hatters himself that in marry

piling up for the future a large invoice
of ungovernable, woo is liable to get
