forces now in Cuba, has had wide experience in military affairs. A native of
Now York, he was graduated from West Point, at the age of twenty-two, in
1877. He served llrst In the cavalry and later in the infantry, rising to the
rank of lieutenant colonel by the time of the Spanish war. Ho was made a

THE EIOH WHO GIVE
A Dafcnso of this Glass by Jacob H.
Schiff, .a Well Known Observer
. Jacob II. Sehiflf was one of tho guests
of honor at the dinner of tho Now York
Post-graduate Mcdieal sohool at Del
monico's lant night. .
"1 was invited to tho peaqo ban
quet," said he, "but 1 decided, thntfl
would rather bo with you, After all,
this is as cflicient a meeting as the con
gress. You, who try to euro diseased
minds and bodios, aro tho truo mission
aries of peace."
Then he took as his text an announce
ment lupdo earlier in the evening by Dr.
G. N. Miller, sccrotary of tho institu
tion. The Jones bequest of from $110,
Q00 to $115,000 will be paid next week
with $25,000 to $30,000 to come later.
This will reduce the debt on the Post
graduate hospital to $300,000. Mr.
Schilf congratulated the institution, and
proceeded to express his. views upon tho
benefactions of the wealthy.
"If only rich men," he said, "who
do so much for education and art would
do eoniething for tho medical schools
they would effect more good. Thoy
should support not only tho schools at
tached to univorsities, bat those situ
ated in great cities, where tho material
for medical study is plentiful.
"Wo hear much of the responsibility
of the classes to the masses. Gentle
men, I am not sure whether tho masses
do their duty as thoroughly as do the
clashes. I am filled with admiration for
men like Kockofeller and Morgan. and
tho others of whom Dr. Miller spoke.
Thoy have great fortunes, but thoy di
icct their diffusion rightly. Their wealth
is liko a resorvojr, into which run little
streams from tho mountains, which of
thomselvea would be of no U3o to mant
Mr. Schi ffthen pointed out that tho
medical profession could do much to
assist the classes in tho management of
tho wealth they had collected from tho
lnnKOB by showing tho general run of
mankind that it was a goud thing that
the moans of doing things had been
concentrated in tho hands of the fow
who could use them wisely.
"You dortors," he said, "who come
into touch with all classes, cannot do
better than to tench toleration .of the
wealthy man. At present .the men who
have gathered great fortunes aro in
discriminately condemned. ,
"I congrnti.lato you on what you
have accomplished. The city and coun
try hnvo the light to bo proud of your
achievements. Thoso who .coino- from
Europe may s y there js here too iinuch

thoy as kfor palaces and castles let

sciuueo. They aro our real princes."

The mines of this district produce the richest per cent ores in the.
''"world. Butte, Montana, has produced over $900,000,000.00 from
' 600-acres of land and from ores which averaged less than 6. per
cent copper, 'and the Michigan average is less than 2 per cent
copper. You may not know that we have many good properties
in this district which run from 5 to 34 per cent copper besides '
good silver and gold.
. . We have organized a cornoration, and incorporated under the
Arizona Jaws, the purpose of which is. to take up these many
properties, organize them into companies and sell enough treas
