But if thou shouldst, confess early in the gamo and thy path shall bo strewn with bright flowers and thy resting place a bed of roses. And just think, a few short months ago formor Mayor Schmitz of San Francisco was hobnobbing with the president and trying to sottlo an inter national squabble. Tho Phoenix Uopublicnn has come out in favor of an uninstructed Arizona delegation to tho Republican nationnl convention. Thus dies tho Forakor boom a-bornin' in Arizona. Now Mexico is aroused ovor charges of cruelty to -convicts by tho superin tendent of tho territorial prison. The latter is something that is often near to tho hearts of somo prominont Now Mexicans. "Tho loaded rovolver in tho presi dent's hip pockot is not likely to do n oar as much damago as tho loaded bot tles other men carry in tho same ro gions," says tho Washington Post in extenuation. But supposo that it falls out and goes off! "A man without reason," says the Baltimore American, "is as useless as a boat without oars or sails." Of course, out in this country wo don't protend to know anything about maritimo af fairs, but we always supposed that the best boats -wcro those propelled by neither oars or sails. IN THE LIMELIGHT AGAIN In New Mexico politics fair play is a stranger; not so much between the two principal parties, but botwecu the two factions of the Republican party, which is in tho majority. Feeling be tween Democrats and Republicans was nover so bitter as that now between tho followers of tho notorious Bull An drews and thoso who supported tho for mer Governor Ilnccrman. Until re cently tho latter wcro tho administra tion party and tho other the anti-administration. Now, by a letter from tho president, they have changed places and tho methods which wero employed bringing about tho change will always be a blot in Now Mexican history. At present thero is in progress at Santa Fo an investigation of charges mado against tho superintendent of the territorial prison, which is loented in that city. The New Mexican, tho offi cial organ of the Andrews faction, which is engaged in tao task of ousting tho prison superintendent, in a recent editorial gives as reasons for not hav ing tho investigation beoro tho prison board tho fact that two of the members wcro appointed by llagerman and con sequently were incapablo of conducting a fair and impartial hearing of tho charges. For presumably this reason the investigation is being conducted bo foro tho attorney general, who was re cently appointed by tho acting governor, an Andrews man, and tho attorney gen eral of tho notorious Otero regime. With tho Andrews faction in New Mexico it is rule or ruin, and they would put tho torritory in hock or send it to tho demnition bow-wows rather than loso control. Their political meth ods have always boon moro or less nau seating and their means of obtaining rovengo for political throw-downs is moro so, if that is possible. But as long as bank wreckers continue to got pic at Roosovelt's stand, conditions will remain tho same. It was a suro enough guardian angol that watched ovor Arizona and saved her from joint statehood and wo caro not whether its namo was 6abriol or Foraker. LUMBER KINO RICHER THAN ROCKEFELLER The Wealth of Frederick Weyerhauser of St. Paul Said to Exceed Ono Thousand Million Dollars Who is tho richest man of the United States? No; tho answer is not as easy as you thought, soys tho Boston Herald. For Frederick Weyorhausor, tho lumber king of tho world, is possibly worth moro than John D. Rockefeller, tho man. you had in mind. Weyorhnnsor is said to bo worth $1,200,000,000. And 10 years from now, if tho present xato of advance in lumber continues, ho may bo worth $2, 000,000,000. Wovorhausor owns 110,000 acres of timbor land not barron, rocky, marsh or desort land, but land covorctl with ovorgrowing timbor, selected with tho care of an export who , not only was seeking for forests, but for forests of sound and hoalthy timber. Ho acquired this land by tho oxer ciso of foresight. Tho life's history of tho mnn will best show how this fore sight lias beon exorcised. Woycrhnusor was born at Noidor Baulhoiin, a hamlet of southern Ger many, in 1831, which mnkes his ngo today IX A laborer on a farm till ho readied his 1 8th birthday, ho mado up his mind to seek his fortuno in a land whoro freedom played a moro prominont part than it did in south Germany, in thoso days n hotbod of emancipationists. Tho great populnr movement, fost ered by Hoine, Woinbnrg, Frciligrnph and others, stirred this young Touton nnd filled his mind with restless am bition. So in 1852, accompanied by his mother and sisters, ho crossed the ocean. Sotling first in Erie, Pa., ho found work in n brewery, but migrated four years later to Rock Island, 111., whore "ho got employment at $1 a day wages piling slabs. Six months later saw him mnnnger of tho plant, and in nnothor year a partner in tho concorn In n follow worker at tho mill, F. C. A. Donckman, Weyorhnnsor found a fellow-countryman, destined in after years to bo a closo ally in all his schomes and enterprises. Together, in 1S(30 thoy bought tho other mon out 6f tho bus iness, nnd soon found themselves free from debt and with enough capital to cnnblo thorn to strike out with boldness nnd confidence. Meanwhile Weyorhnnsor tho travel ling partner, had visited Wisconsin and Minnesota, whore ho discovered lands rich in timber, that could be purchased for a few cents an acre. The firm be gan to buy. Additional mills wero con structed nnd money began to roll in fast. Sinco 1872 Weyorhnnsor has been buying forests, and not once has his judgmont been nt fnult. He created tho littlo known nnd mysterious "Woycr hnusor syndicate," acknowledged by tho lumber world to bo tho most jwwor ful factor in the trade. The Mississippi River Boom & Logging company, of which ho wfts elected president in tho early eighties, is and always has beon the bnso of his known transactions. But thero aro few who know just what Wcycrhouscr is doing or nljout to do. Essentially a silent man, his secre cy on business matters borders on tac iturnity. Master of marvelous forests in Wis consin, Minnesota and tho Great Lakes districts, Washington and the other far western states, he controls most of tho logging done on tho Mississippi. Ho can bo said to fix tha price of logs, the price of handling them on tho rivers, the prico of sawing them and the price of tho finished product. And, in all this, ho shuns publicity like the Grand Llama of Thibot. His ambition apparently is unquonchnblc, and yot tho results of achievements, as applied in tho shape of yachts, automo biles and such liko properties, aro lack ing. Ho lives with his wife and family in a large, but far from palatial, house in a suburb of St. Paul. His four boys have all received excellent educations, but have been obliged to work in the lumber camps and go through tho mills as their father did beforo them. His oldest daughter, the wife of a Syracuse clergyman, spent her life before her marriage in missionary work among the poor of Now York city. Weyerhauser himself is very charita ble, and there is many a story told around tho lumberman's firo of relief given to men down on thoir luck. Ho is a grizzled, keencyed, stern-mouthed man of scanty locks and close trimmed white beard, standing some fivo feet nino inches, and talking with a. Ger man accent. Sewing machines for rent at J. It camo about by acci dont. "Isaac L. Ellwood was tho inventor of barbed wire. In his youth ho lived in Do Kalb, 111., nnd having a noighbor whoso pigs trespassed in his gnrden, ho put up ono day a wire fenco of his own make. The fence had barbs and points on it; it was queer and ugly; but it kept out tho pigs. "It was a real barbed wire fence, tho first in tho world, -and thero was millions of monoy in it, but young Ell wood and his friends lnughed at its freak appearance. "Ono day two strangers saw this fence, perceived how well it kopt out tho pigs, realized how cheap it was, realized, in a word, its valuo, and or dered several tons of it from Ellwood. Furthermore, they contracted to sell for a term of years all tho barbed wiro ho could make. "Ellwood borrowed $1,000 and sot up a little factory. A few years later on ho had paid back that loan, nnd was worth a small matter of $15,000,000 bo sides." New York Sun. Reflections of a Bachelor A conscience is something to worry you for fear you aro going to got caught. Tho rich would got terribly poor if thoro weren't so many poor pcoplo to mako monoy for them. A woman is afraid if she has on clothes out of fashion nt her funeral thoy wouldn't lot her into heaven. Tho wife with theories that won't work tries to mako a man happy; the successful ono makes him comfortable. A man thinks ho is mighty generous to his wife to mako her an allowance and then not give it to her so alio can think she is saving money. Now York Press. THE MAN WHO WINS Tho man who wins is tho mnn who docs, Tho mnn who makes things hum and buzz, Tho man who works and tho mnn who acts, Who builds on a basis of solid facts; Who doesn't sit down to mope nnd dream, Who humps ahead with tho forco of stenm, Who htiBii't the time to fuss nnd frot, iBut gets thero every time, you bet. Tho man who wins is tho man who wears A smilo to cover his burden of enres; Who knows that tho sun will sliino again, That tho clouds will puss and wo need tho rain. Who buckles down to pile of WorlT And never gives up nnd never will shirk Till tho task is done, and tho toil is swoet, Whilo tho temples throb with' tho red blood's heat. The mnn who wins is tho man who climbs Tho ladder of Hfo to tho cheery chimes Of tho bells of labor, tho bells of toil, And isn't afraid that his skin will spoil If ho face that shine of tho glnring sun And works in tho light till his task is done; A human engine with triplo beam And a hundred and fifty pounds of steam. Man's Blood Turns to Ink Ono of tho strangest cases in medical records is that of Frank Powell, mem bor of n firm of manufacturing chemists of this city, whoso blood is turning to ink, changing tho color of his cutire body to a blue. Powell was trying to open n can of analino nnd tho cork stuck. When it finally came it was with considerable forco and, impelled by u gas which had formed in tho cnu, tho liquid waB thrown ovor his face and hands. Ho inhaled tho fumes, which caused cx- tromo dizziness, and since then ho has boon confined to his bed. His ilesh is turning blue nnd from tho pores exudes a fluid resembling ink. Ho will prob ably recover, although his physician says that so far as ho knows there is no similar caso on record. Grand Rap ids dispatch to New York World. MINERAL APPLICATION No. 203.
