Why Did
Noah Drink?
BEING EXTRACTS FROM THE
GREAT LECTURE ON TEMPER
ANCE BY T. DE WITT TALMAGE.
"Thoro has, in all ngca nnd climes,
been n tendency to tho improper use
of stimulants. Noah, as if disgusted
with tho provalcnco of water in his
time, tool; to strong drink. By this
ice, Alexander the Conqueror was con
quered. Tho Romans at their feasts fell
off their seats with intoxication. Four
hundred millions of our raco are opium
caters. One hundred millions aro the
victims of tho betel nut, which has spe
cially blasted tho East Indies. Three
hundred millions ohew hasheesh. The
Tartars employ murowa; tho Mexicans,
tho agave; Avhilo a great multitude thnt
no mnii can number, aro disciples of
alcohol, 'lo it they bow. Under it thoy
are trampled. In its trenches thoy fall.
On Us ghastly holocaust thoy burn.
' Drunkenness! Does it not jingle tho
burglar's koyf Does it not whet the
I assassin's knifoJ Does it not cock the
I highwayman's pistol! Docs it not wave
mo incendiary torciu Jias it not sent
tho physician reeling into tho sick
room; and tho minister witli his tongue
thick into the pulpit? Did not an ex
quisito poet, from tho vory top of his
fame, fall n gibbering sot, into tho gut
ter, on his way to be married to one of
tho fairest daughters of Now England,
and did ho not dio of delirinm tremens),
almost unattended!
Tnmerlano asked for ono hundred and
sixty thousand skulls with which to
build a pyramid in his own honor. Ho
got tho skulls, nnd built tho pyramid,
But if tho bones of all thoso who have
fallen as a prey to whiskey could bo
piled up thoy would make n vaster pyra
mid.
Wo can't regulato intemperance.
We aro in this country, nt this timo,
trying to regulate tho evil by n tax on
whisky. You might ns well try to reg
ulato tho Asiatic cholera, or tho small
pox, by taxation. Tho men who distill
liquor are, for the most part, unscrupu
lous; and tho higher tho tax, tho moro
inducement to illicit distillation. New
York produces forty thousand gallons
of whisky every twenty-four hours; nnd
tho most of it escapes tho tax. Tho
most vigilant officials fail to discover
tho cellars and tho vaults and sheds
where tho work is dono.
Oil, the folly of trying to restrain an
evil by government tariffs! If ovcry
galoln of whisky made, if every flask
of wine produced, should bo taxed a
thousand dollars, it would not bo enough
to pay for tho tears it has wrung out
of tho oyes of widows and orphans, nor
for tho blood it lias dasltcd on tho altars
of tho Christian church, nor for tho
catastropiio of tho millions it has de
stroyed forcvor.
Thoro is no euro but prohibition.
Onco under tho power of this awful
thirst, tho man is bound to go on; and
if tho foaming glass wcro on tho other
sido of pordition ho would wado through
tho fires of hell to got it. A young man
in prison had such n strong tnsto for
intoxicating liquors thnt ho cut off his
hand nt the wrist, called for a bowl of
brandy in ordor to stop1 tho bleeding,
thrust liis wrist into tho bowl nnd then
drank tho contents.
Stand not, whon tho thirst is on him,
between a man nnd his cups! Clear
tho track for him! Away with tho chit
drcn; away with tho wife; away witli
tho Cross; away with tho Biblo; away
with heaven! "Give mo tho drink!
Givo it to mo! Though hands of blood
pass up tho bowl tho drink! givo it to
mo! Though it bo palo with tears;
though tho frost of ovorlasting anguish
llont in tho foam, give it to mo! Hi
drink to my wifo's woo, to my child
ren's rags; to my eternal banishment
fiom God nnd hopb of heaven! Givo it
to mo! tlio drink!"
There is no .homo so beautiful but it
may be devastated by tho awful curse.
It throws its jargon into tho sweetest
haimony. What wns it that silenced
Shoridau's voice nnd shattered tho gol
den hcoptro with which ho swayed par
liaments and courts? What foul sprite
turned tho .sweet rhythm of Robert
Burns into a tuneless ballad? What
brought down tho majestic form of ono
who nwed tho American senate with his
eloquence, and after a while carried him
homo dead rank from tho office of tho
secretary of state! What was it that
cripplod tho noble spirit of ono of Hie
fieroes of tho Into war until tho other
night, in n drunken fit, ho reeled from
tho deck of a western steamer nnd was
drowned! There was ono whoso voice
we all loved to hear. Ho was ono of
tho most classic orators of tho century.
Peoplo wondered why a man of so pure
u heart nnd so excellent n iifo should
hnvo such a sad countenanco always.
They knew not thnt his wifo wns a
sot.
I call upon thoso who nro guilty of
these indulgences to quit tho puth of
death. Oh, what a chango it would
make in your homo! Do you seo how
everything tlicro is being desolafodf
Would you not like to bring back 'joy
to your wifo's heart, and havo your
children como out to mot vou with as
much confidence ns once thoy showed?
Would you not liko to rekindlo tho homo
lights thnt long ago were extinguished!
It is not too lato to change. It may
not entirely obliternte from your soul
tho moiuory of wasted years nnd a ru
ined reputation, nor smooth out from
anxious brows tho wrinkles which trou
blo lias plowed. It may not call back
unkind words uttered or rough deeds
dono for, perhaps, in thoso awful .mo
ments you struck her! It may not inko
from your memory tho bitter thoughts
connected with some little grnve; but
it is not too lato to save yourself and
securo for God nnd your fumily tho
remainder of your fast-going life.
But perhaps you have not utterly
gono astray. I may address one who
may not hnvo quito made up his mind.
Let your better natures peak out. You
take ono side or tho other in tho war
against drunkenness. Have you nbt
tho courage to put your foot down right
and say to your companions and yoUr
friends: "I will novcr drink intoxi
sating liquor in all my life, nor will I
countenance tho habit in others."
Have, nothiug to do with strong drink.
It lias turned tho cartli into a placo of
toalostworhltoletinitashrdlushrdjushrdlu
skulls, nnd has stood opening tho gate
to a lost world to let in its victims,
until now the door swings no moro upon
its hinges, but day and night stands
wido open to let in the agonized proces
sion of doomed men.
A philanthropist going up to the
counter of a grog shop, as the propri
etor was mixing n drink for n toper
standing at tho counter, said to the
proprietor, "Can you tell mo what youh
business is good for?" Tho proprietor,
with an infernal laugh, said, "It fat
tens graveyards."
Now, there is no man who owes moro
to the grace of God than I do, nnd while
I live on earth nnd throughout nil tho
nges of heaven, I propose to celebrate
it; but thc.ro aro certain things thnt the
grnco of God does not propose to do.
Never let tho timo come in my his
tory when I cease to extol tho graco of
God, hut there aro other men who need
something, besides that.
I think that wo aro coming at last
to treat inebriety as it ought to bo
treated, namely, as an awful disease,
self-inflicted, to bo sure, but neverthe
less a disease. Onco fastened upon a
man, sermons will not euro him; tem
perance lessons will not eradicate tho
tasto; religious tracts will not arrest
it; thco gospel of Christ will not ar
rest it.
Tho McKnnna Three-Day Liquor Cure
abides on this fnct: It is a scientific
euro for the disease. It docs not pur
port to put mornl power into.n man's
head, but it does take nwny from him
ny desiro for strong drink. If he goes
bnck to drinking lie docs it with malice
nforethougli, willfully and deliberatoyl
not from thirst or necessity for stim
ulants'. Dozens of prominent citizens of Ari
zonn, as well ns other states, havo taken
tho treatment and bear willing testi
mony to its cfliency.
