Tho domocrats of New Mexico will have good campaign matorial to offer to the people in tho next campaign in the remarks mado by Assistant United Stntos Attornoy Gonoral Mcllarg bofore .ludgo Mel-'io in tho matter of issuing attachments for certain witnesses want ed by the government from tho state of 2cw .Torsoy. dlu..Tn"dFCof v onkPc gBpoyafilfiGzj- Mcllarg apparently became excited and lot out a warmer "roast" than lias evor boon administered to republican dnicials by any newspaper or political convention in tho territory. MjcHnrg .intimated that ho was not caring much for the court or anybody around tho" territory; that lio was here to soo that tho laws wore enforced and that they would be, even if it was for the grst time in those courts. Ho declared that tho courts in New Mexico were run by tho politicians and that jury manipulators woro a part of tho machinery. Ho insisted that tho workings of the present jury would be kept secret "de spite the efforts to got information." Tho domocrats are naturally taking every advantage of the charge. No democratic newspaper or orator has ever given the republican party in New Mexico such a mauling as it re- iccivcd in the courtroom from Mcllarg. j The proceedings before tho court were 1 lively. Catron, Hawkins and Spiess ap peared to resist the motion of tho Unit ed States for an attachment against tho i ' persons of three women witnesses sum- , ! moned from tho stato of New Jersey. It j appeared that one witness was too far ! advanced in ago to make tho journey, ; and that another was too ill. Assistant to tho Attorney General Mcllarg want ed attachments issued for at least two of them, but tho court refused upon the showing made, but did grant an attach ment for one, a negro woman. During tho arguments tho attorneys developed such bitterness, Mcllarg in sisted that a statement offered by Spiess was not true nnd Spiess promptly called him a falsifier. Mcllarg then made a statement to tho court to tho effecj that aho had known nothing of the re fusal of these witnesses to attend until Saturday afternoon preceding tho hear ing, but Hawkins forced him to admit that ho had been in telegraphic com munication with tho department before that time on tho very matter. Tt U already known that the demo crats will incorporate the Mcllarg olinrws in their next platform. Ac- nrdinL' to Mcllarg, the courts of the territory are corrupt and tho prnctico is to manipulnto the juries in tho inter ests of tho politicians in power.
