Conrad, war votcraiij lawyer and judge who practiced law on this const long ago, has arrived here ou a search that has lasted for years for a daughter ho docs not know and who has nover been told that ho is her father. JIo tells a strango story, framed in romanco and tragedy. Thirty years ago, in Ccntreville, Iowa, lie mar ried Emma Shonts, sister of Theodore P. Shonts; former chairman of tho Pan ama canal commission. Two years af terward sho diedlcaving a baby girl, which Conrad gavo to tho custody of his mother-in-law, while he went out to faco tho world. The child passed from hand to hand; When he sought her again ho learned she was in Chicago, but no longer named Conrad, having been brought up as the daughter of John Campbell, husband of his dead wife's sister. John Campbell's parents believed her their grandchild. As sho grew up to womanhood the child nover learned otherwise. Sho married a man named Kelly, and Conrad thinks sho is now in California. Ifo does not even know her Christian name, as she was christened after ho lost her. Ho de clares all tho relatives of his dead wifo are against him. A girl hankers after an elopement because it usually means a bigger notice in tho newspapers than tho other way. J New York Pres3. Pointed Paragraphs "What is homo without a good cook!
