U.mpVlgiLABE L .'IIBBEY NOT MISUNDERSTOOD til an editorial something over a col l ;n in longth tho Plioenix Itepubliean pfesses to show how Governor Kib boy during his recent visit in fllobo was ' 'misunderstood" by tho Silver Bolt, which published an intervioW from tho governor tho morning after his arrival here. The editorial is os tensibly a .putativo defense of tho gov ernor's position on national politics, but it conveys a rap at' tho oxecutivo that is too transparent to bo misunder- stood. The governor during his visit here was quoted by tho Silver Bolt as say ing that "it would bo Itoo&evolt, or a man backed by tho executive, or a democrat who would bo the noxt presi dent," and tho Republican immediately goes into a virtuous partisan convul sion, declaring that "ho (tho Silvor Belt reporter) mado tho governor uttor a libel against tho republican party (im possible!), tho entire country and the govornor'.s own reputation for sound judgmont." "Tho gpvornor may believo" con tinues tho Republican, ."that Mr. Roosevelt will be renominated, but we cannot conceive that Govornor Kibbey would indorse the alternative of a can didate named by the prosidont or that ho could thus bo led into a recognition of the doctrine that any president how ever wise and virtuous, should be per mitted to name his successor. If the govornor holds that gonoral belief, ho has not a majority of Americans with him.'" v v "-Now the govornor,railly-did say, . without stuttering, what ho is roportod ,to have said in the Silvor Belt and to which our contemporary takes excep tion, and in declaring so, wo beliee that he expressed his honest opinion, which, by ' the way, sooms to bo tho same opinion as held by the largo ma jority of republicans throughout tho country, who aro hailing Taft as Roose velt's successor. Tho Silver Belt also bcliovc3 that the governor undoubtedly wished to convey that it would be a man who .would continue the policies of tho present administration, rathor than a man named by Roosevelt, in tho literal t sense. And as to tho gov ernor's reputation for sound judgmont well, when tho executive said it would bo a democrat as tho other alternative, we bclicvo'that ho displayed very sound judgment, which could only havo been sounder had ho eliminated the former one. While it is not the province of the Silvor Belt to defend Governor Kibboy in a political way, a duty which is so willingly assumed by his erstwhile en emy, our civic prido compels us to sco that he does not suffer evil from his recent visit to Globe, and wo also take this opportunity of correcting a state ment in tho governor's interview which had him say that ho believed Roosevelt would accept tho nomination if it were, tendered him unanimously. Tho gov ernor stated afterward that ho bolievcfl the prosidont would accept tho nomina tion more Readily if it were not unan imous. v' Although it is entirely irrelevant in this connection, wo would like to know what sortfof republicanism is that of the Republican whqtlicr it is that of Roosevelt, which Bryan declares is dem ocracy, or that of Poraker, Fairbanks and Cannon, tho real genuine Standard Oil life insurance and public bo damned sort.
