Far moro pronounced and gen eral than even on Christmas day, it per varied verv nook and cranny of tho city and every person, old or young, mnlo pr female, seemed permeated with tho happy spirit. Kvcn tho "oldest jn habitant' fails to remember when a New Year's day was so thoroughly ob served nnd tho holiday spirit so gener al than on the first day of 1903. Thorc is usually sorao regret felt at tho pass ing of an old year, but if thero was any felt in Olobo at tho departuro of 1907. thero was no indication of it, and if tears were shed, it was done in private. Still the year just past rnado a splendid start 'and the first half of it was prolific of good things for this district. Tho latter half brought, as it did elsewhere in the country, less sat isfactory results, but it also brought its lessons. With good feeling restored and only optimism expressed, shown and felt at every hand, no moro auspicious beginning of a now year could be do sired. Tho future of Globe, tho min 'ing district tributary to it, and of all Arizona as well, is full of promise nnd the yoar 1903, judging from present Indications, will be far more productive than tho year just ended, and that wiU bo "going iome," as with 1907 Ari zona took tho leadinc place in tho production of mineral wealth. ' Washington's Birthday is the next stop and then March 17. We learn from n Boston paper that a presidential boom has bceu started for Governor Guild of Massachusetts. Wonder if tho- corn cob pipe trust is in back of tho anti cigaret cam paign in Michigan. . , , . 1 1 i- it. wo eat too mucni" asss me Herald. Well, some of us do .and somo of us can't. "Do Boston It will be hard to imagine the feel ings of Senator Fornker when he hears of what tho colored peoplo of Mobile did on Now Year's day. Threo months' imprisonment for treason sounds liko light imprisonment, but when one considers that over a hundred reform leaders of Russia were on trial, ho can see whero the Russian court of appeal was wise. BANKING AND NOTE ISSUES. Before congress gets verboso on cur rency reform tho American public should clear its mind on the difference .between banking nnd the issuo of bank notes. Tho great function of banking is the receipt of deposits and the mak ing of loaus. Tho issue of notes is a special function which might be per formed by a special agency or by tho government exclusively without neces sarily affecting tho banking business. Jn all the ins And outsof d'dbato tho intelligent reader wilt keep clear this difference' 'Also do not forget that credit plus collateral and curroncy arc widely different, the former represent ing tho wealth of the country nnd tho latter being a medium of exchange. Attcll jabbed a left to the Brfton's soro nose nnd they sparred at long range. At tcll then shot a strnight left to tho face and swung a hard right to tho jaw. He followed it with a right and left to the body nnd they clinched.
