Why can't a woman build an aero
piano just as good, or even better, than
a man can build? There is no answer.
It was very much theso samo ques
tions which Miss K. T. Todd put to the
person who showed her a drawing of an
early Dumont aeroplane model back in
January, 1906. In fact, E. T. Todd
(to bo practical and businessliko wo will
omit tho miss) was questioned further,
and said that sho could build n bettor
I aeroplane herself.
E. T. Todd's aero studio is up a few
flights of stairs at 131 West Twenty
third 3trcct. It is n room 11 by 11, ac
cording to its occupants own estimate.
But it is in this room that sho look up
the dare, and it is hero that she evolved
the perfect model which was exhibited
to tho newspaper men tho other day.
Tho model consists of two superim
posed planes, but, unliko most other
air ships, they aro curved laterally and
meet at cither end instead of being
boxed. Tho machino. therefore, looks
more liko a bird than most of its pre-
idecessors. Tho basket, carrying the
motor and men, is hung on a bar be
, twecn the boxes on each side, much as
to hang between its wings in flight.
There is tlie usual propeller at the back
of tho baskot, and also two largo rud
dcrs, whilo at the front is a horizontal
piano which can be raised or lowered
to control tho elevation.
Tho point of tho machino lies chiefly
in the method of hanging the basket
an in the control, which is supposed by
tho inventor to obviate tho embarras
sing ground swooping tactics of 60 many
aeroplanes.
In size, tho real aeroplane will bo
forty-two feet from tip to tip, about
eight foot high, nnd not over seven feet
from stem to stem.
Tho frame is of steel tubing, and the
surfaces of baloon fabric, and tho wholo
air ship, exclusivo of motor, weighs but
250 pounds. There aro about eighty
four squaro yards of surface. Tho six
foot propeller will bo driven by a motor
o fat least 50 horse-power, and tho in
ventor has figured that tho machine
will as easily carry a motor of 100
horsepower; tho latter being of eight
cylinders and weighing 300 pounds.
E. T. Todd was an exhibitor at James
town and at exhibitions of tho aero
club. Sho says that tho only experts
who havo scon her latest model say it
will fly.
Miss Todd did not submit plans to
tho War Department in its recent con
test, but Bho has taken all tho specifi
cations of that contest into account in
her latcs venture and is sure that it
w'll meet thorn all. Among theso re
quirements aro that tho aeroplane must
carry gasolino sufficient for 225 miles,
and that it must carry two men, and
that it must mako not less than 30
miles an hour. Tho woman inventor
says her mnchino will go about 40 miles
an hour tho average of the best French
aeroplanes at their best.

locally 3.05 to 3.75.
Spelter declined 5s to 21. 5s in Lon
don and remained dull and unchanged
at 4.80 to 4.85 locally.
London Iron was a shade higher with
standard foundry 47s and Cleveland
warrants 48s, 7'jd. Locally no change
was reported.

tain western railway," says a prom
inent officer of an eastern line, "wo
had in our employ a brakeman who, for
special scrvico rendered to tho road,
was granted a month's vacation.
"Ho decided to spend his time in a
trip ovor tho. Rockies. "We furnished
him with passes.
"He went to Denver, nnd there met
a number of his friends at work on
ono of the Colorado roads. They gave
him a good time, and when ho went
away mado him a present of a moun
tain goat.
"Evidently our brakeman was nt a
loss to get the animal homo with him,
as tho express charges wero vcryheavy
at that timo. Finally, however, hit
tingupon a happy expedient, ho mado
out a shipping tag and t?cd it to the
horns of tho goat. Then he presented
tho beast to the ofllco of tho stock car
line.
"Well, that tag created no end of
amusement, but it served to accomplish
tho end of tho brakeman. It was in
scribed as follows: 'Please Pass tho
Butter. Thomas J. Meechin, Brakeman,
S. S. & T. By.' "
