bill, if passed, was calculated to stifle'
free speech and exclude from tho mails,
tit tho will of tho postolllco department,
newspapers that did not suit the1 taste
of the postmastor general. Tho reso
lutions, as passed by the local union
wcro forwardpd to Mjirfr Smith, dele
gate to congress from Arizona, with the
request that ho use his influence in Inn
ing tho bill defeated. President Michael
J. O'Connor of the union received the
following letter from Delegate Smith

Olobo Miners' Union, Olobo, Ariz.
My Dear Sir: I am in receipt of the
resolutions adopted by the Olobo Min
ers' union, touching what is known as
the Pcnroso bill. You wero all unduly
alarmed about this matter, for it never
had a hope of passage either through
tho house or the senate. In fact when
I received your letter the senate com.
tnitteo had already reported adversely
on the bill. If it had ever passed the
senate and reached the house it would
have been killed in committee. The
freedom of tho mail, to men's opinion
on all questions of business moment are
in no danger of being violated by the
congress of the United States. It is a
much maligned body of men. As a rule
they are honorable, upright, intelligent,
and ns patriotic as the men who vote
for them. Of course there nre excep
tions to this, but not ns many as yon
would naturally suppose.
With all respect I beg to s.ny that
it was hardly necessary to say to me
that if I had one drop of Americanism
in meto nssert it, by using all means,
fair or foul, to defeat this un-American
measure.
I was born in America, my father,
my mother, as likewise my grand par
ents and great grandparents were born
in America and fought in all its early
wars, either they or their kinfolks. and
however others may boast, I permit no
man to feel a deeper and more abiding
love of his country and of the welfare
of its people tluin animates me in every
act of mine. I tako great pleasure in
assuring you and through you the lodge
