A THRIFTY OFFICIAL.
Tho republican candidate for county
treasurer has adopted a novel plan to
impress upon taxpayers tho great ser
vice he has rendered them during his
term of ofllco. On the envelopes in
which ho mails notices of taxes due he
has had printed a card setting forth his
achiovoments. Dan says ho has actu
ally paid county warrants! Fur
thormoro, that he holds bonds for county
moneys In tho banks, and collects inter
est on deposits. Well, what was he elect
ed for if not to do his duty? Gila coun
ty has been prosperous during Dan's
term and there has been plenty of cash
in tho treasury with which to promptly
nieot the obligations of the county. Cer
tainly with so largo a balance to loan
out, tha best of security, and interest,
also, should bo required to bo given by
tho banks which he has named as de
positories for the county funds. Dan is
thrifty, and it is presumed that the
county is paying tho postage on Ids cam
paign matter going through tho malls
to taxpayers.
REPUBLICANS RESPONSIBLE
VALIDATING BONDS.

Tho writer of tho republican cam
paign dopo that appears daily on tho
opposite page is cither disingenuous or
not well informed, when he assorts that
it was a democratic legislature that
memorialized congress to pass an act
validating the Pima and Yavapai county
bonds. That memorial was adopted by
the 18th legislature. Tho council was a
tie, but was organized by republicans
and A. J. Doran was tho presiding of
ficer. Tho houso was composed of seven
teen or eighteen republicans and' cither
six or seven democrats the voto on
joint ballot was 23 or 21 republicans to
either 12 or 13 democrats. That a dem
ocrat could be found so unfaithful to his
party and to tho interests of Arizona
as to introduce the memorial is rogreta
blc, but that it was adopted by repub
lican votes is beyond dispute. Harry
Carpenter was speaker of tho houso and
when tho memorial refercd to came up
it was adopted by a viva voce voto, and
Speaker Carpenter refused to permit a
poll of the houso on the motion to adopt,
and declared the motion carried despite
tho vigorous protests of Geo. W. P.
Hunt of Gila, George Skinner of Graham
and one other democrat. The passage of
tho memorial was a republican trick,
and Oakcs Murphy, our republican dole
gato, engineered through congress the
bill that legalized the worthless bonds.
That wa3 the service rendered Arizona
by a republican delegate.
Ralph Cameron's promise to get state
hood by March 4, next, is amusing, in
view of the fact that if elected he
would not take his scat in congress un
til a year from next December. Our
republican friends in Arizona needn't
worry Mark Smith will look after their
interest in the statohood business,
whether tho bill for tho admission of
Arizona is taken up at the short session
next spring or during the succeeding
session.
Our republican friends complain that
they have been unable over to defeat
Mark Smith in an election, and it pains
them exceedingly that ho has served
Arizona as dolegatc to congress for six
teen years. Could any strongsr endorse
inent bo given Mark Smith than tho
plaint of our disgruntled enemy?
Poor Bill Sparks, his o'reweening de
sire to bo a real sheriff again to bo un
satisfied. He hasn't even the united
support of his party, which Is too woak
to elect any of its candidates without
democratic votes.
"Tommy should ba allowed to play
statesman because Johnny has been it
long enough. Danny Bhould be allowed
to keep tho candy because he might cry
if it were taken away from him." Such
is the argument that the republican cam
paign editor puts up why the republican
candidates should be given the offices. i
Gila county will continue to carry, tho
banner for casting the largest demo
cratic voto.
It is pointed out that John D. Rock
efeller wore sideburns forty years ago.

Bryan is a certainty. -
Wall street, a few weeks ago, offering
odds on Taft's election, Is now silent,
and is in a waiting attitude. Now York,
Ohio, Indiana, North D&fcotn, Colorado
and Oregon havo been placed in tho
doubtful column, and thoy aro said to
have a strong democratic leaniug.

those who are in a position to know
say that thero havo been no private
wagers of any importance and that
little money has appeared in tho
Street to back the chances of cither
candidate. It is safe to say that
thero will bo no pronounced revival
in Wall street, activity until the pol
iticians can givo more positive as-t
surances as to tho final result.
Cunning George is a mighty fine fel
low and is entitled to tho tender em
brace of charity. George is in the em
ploy of tho Espeo, and dutiful, perhaps
to a fault, he is simply serving his mas
ters. Only thrco days mors in which to
register. It is a duty that no good
citizen should overlook.
"Uncle Sam" has been watching
them point with prldo and view with
alarm too long to fear he will be shipped
to the poorhouse after tho election, no
matter who wins the big prize.
Unless Mr. Chafin demands and ob
tains a recount, or somctlilng of the
kind, people will bo unable to dccldo
off hand six months from now whether
ho was a candidate or a breakfast food,
