One of the most encouraging results of the business disturbances of the past year has been the increased activ'ty in the mining, iudustry. Several prominent Wall street financiers, have practically deserted the stock exchange for mining enterprises, mid the, samo has been truo all over the country. There has been a great improvement in mining methods and awakening of 'public interest In that important industry. Mining machinery manufacturers report a banner year, aud the scientfic handling and treatment of ores of all kinds i's rapidly taking the place of antiquated hand methods. It is estimated by the president of a large nrning machinery company that the in stallations of tho past twelve months will effect an annual- saving of mora than $10,000,000 over 'fqrmcr operating costs. As an instance of tho advantages of centralization, the ease of the Cop per Queen Mining company is cited, where ore central shaft and plant equip ped Hi modern machinery has been in stalled in place of tho six shaft and isolated plants of small capacity firmer lj in use. The Old Do minion Copper company continues to dovelopc tho rich sulphide ore bodies in the lower workings of tho mine, and while it is not pushing for a larger pro duction at tho present time, the manage ment is getting ready for a substantial increase soon. The costs are being grad ually reduced and tho company is now getting its coke under the contract with the Phelps Dodge pcoplo at mup.li lower cost than it paid last winter. The com pany has about cleared up the bdlauco sheet, and is therefore in a condition which will enable the stockholders to re ceive dividends within a few Mionths. These could have been paid long ago; but tho directors have seen fit to remain strictly conservative nnd build up tho working capital as well as improve the property by tho uso of the earnings. We estimate that Old Dominion is earning at the rate of aljout $1 a share, which is 10 per cent on tho present selling price and that the earnings will increase largoly ncxtyear. through an increase in tho production, lower costs, and high er prices for tho product.
