THE PARTY FOR THE PEOPLE
If tho democratic Idea of requiring
security for bank deposits had prevailed
in Globe last fall, thcro would hava been
no financial panic among our people,
two of our best banks would not have
had to close their door and suffer loss
to tho extent of many thousands of dol
lars, business would not have been dc
' pressed and the evil3 that resulted to
the people of this city, one of the most
prosperous In the whole country, would
have been avoided. It would hava been
i better for the depositors, better for the
community, and better still for the
banks themselves. The peoplo of this
city and county should, for these rea
sons, givo their support to the party
that stands for this idea, and not to the
party that opposes it, and which, by
its opposition, would leave them sub
ject to a repetition of such conditions.
It is true that the people of Arizona
are under territorial conditions, but still
they are able to give expression to their
disapproval of the party that brought
a panic upon the country in a time of
its greatest prosperity, and to give aid
and encouragement to the party that
stands in opposition to such an evil.
This expression can bo given by aiding
in the election of the democratic ticket
of this county, and tho return of Mark
Smith to the congress of tho United
States where he will, in tho future as
ho has in the past, employed every effort
in his power to advance the interests
and welfare of this territory. In doing
this tho people of Gila county can mako
no mistake, for, by supporting the re
publican party, they would only be giv
ing aid and encouragement to the party
which brought upon the panic of last
fall, and which is wholly responsible
for the business depression from which
they have suffered so severely. The
peoplo should not caress the hand that
smote them.
FAVOR DIRECT PRIMARIES
Hon. George W. P. Hunt introduced
a bill into tho assembly at its twenty
third session, which provided for the
nomination of candidates for office by
diroct vote of tho people. No wiser, no
more democratic measure was ever 'in
troduced in a legislative body. It is
based upon tho principle of tho referen
dum, the basic principle of republican
government. Wo hope tho people of
Gila county will deem it wisdom upon
their part to return Mr. Hunt to the
territorial council, as wo believo they
will, and that ho may ronew his efforts
to have a law of that kind enacted.
Of course, Miss Ethel Barrymore did
n't say it. Nobody would over mlstako
her for a "cat."
SMITH VS. CAMERON
Tho republican party of this county,
by its platform, says:
"Wo most heartily endorse tho nom
ination of Ralph Cameron to congress
and call attention to his loyalty as an
Arizonan."
Wo ask: 19 Mr. Cameron any moro
loyal to Arizona than Mark Smith and
thousands of democrats who stand with
him? This much can be said: Mr.
Cameron belongs to a party that used
all tho power at its command to tack
Arizona to Now Moxico as a part of
a republican state to enable that party
and tho great corporations by which it
Is owned and operated, to havo greater
power In congress, while Mark Smith
belongs to a party that stood like a
solid wall against that monstrous prop
osition. They further speak of his
"ability, sincerity and Integrity as a
citizen." Lot us ask: Is ho an ablor
man than Mark Smith? Is ho more sin
cere than Mr. Smith? Is ho a man of
greater integrity than Mr. Smith? Hon
est republicans will join with tho dem
ocrats of this county in saying ho is
not. They spoak of "hi3 devotion to tho
causo of statehood." Is he moro de
voted to it than Mark Smith is? He
can not be; and, however honest ho
may be in ' that respect, tho national
party behind him, and for which ho
stands, used its utmost efforts against
it, and he is bound, as tho representative
and candidato of his party, but his acta.
But such claims aro not made by tho
great body of tho republicans who, llko
tho great body of tho democratic party
aro honest and sincere, but it is the
work of tho plccounter contingent who
dominate that party and control and
operate it, to continue 33 long as pos
siblo their hold upon tho fat places at
its disposal, and every ono of whom aro
at heart opposed to single statehood
for Arizona, and would yoke it to New
Mexico, Sonora, or even tho Fiji Is
lands, If thereby they might be ablo
to keep their party In power, and them
selves In office. But, tho silliness and
insincerity of their claims arc so appar
ent that tho people of Arizona can not
bo misled by them; and we believo
thoy will find to their dismay that tho
result will bo tho sending of Mark
Smith back to congress with tho hearty
approval of a great majority of his
fellow citizens.
A REPUBLICAN BOOTLEGGER
Whenever a political party Is so
hard pressed that it ha3 to depend upon
such methods as that set forth in
tho following circular, it Is time the
peoplo should put upon it the stamp
of their disapproval:
SOLOMONVILLE, Oct. 15. To
show what dirty methods the re
publicans are resorting to in order
to get votes from Mark Smith, a
man named Saulisbury has been
traveling through this valley tell
ing tho people that he Is a demo
crat and former supporter of Smith,
but that ho is now supporting Cam
eron; that ho owned large property
interests in tho territory and im
plored tho farmers to vote for Cam
eron. This same man was in Clif
ton three months ago selling lots
near Fort Bliss, Texas. Ho openly
admitted ho resided in California
and was doing this for pay. No
doubt ho will visit other parts of
tho territory, having left on the
next train after finding out tho
people hero were on to his game.
Brand him as an impostor, as tho
facts will prove ho has no property
In Arizona, but is working for pay.
Publish this and use our names.
JOHN R. HAMPTON,
BEN R. CLARK,
BEN M. CRAWFORD.
REPUBLICAN EFFRONTERY
Tho republicans of this county say
In their platform.: "Wo call attention
to the administration of Gov. Kibboy,
and p-r-o-u-d-l-y point to his achieve,
ments in .the substantial reduction of
taxation."
The truth of the matter is that John
J. Birdno, assessor of Graham county,
and a democrat, was the first man who,
In all the history of Arizona, ever so
much as made an effort to compel the
great mining corporations to pay moro
taxes than they had been paying, and,
after making this effort, and its suc
cess seemed probable and popular, Gov.
Kibbey came to the support of the
movement, and having tho power in his
hands, forced it to success. Now, with
the usual gall of the republican leaders,
they claim the honor and glory of tho
achievement."
.. .,,... ..n ., ...
TO REMUNERATE COUNTY
We pledgo our representatives in
tho next territorial legislative as.
scmbly to uso their utmost endeav
ors to secure such legislation, eithor
territorial or congressional, as will
secure to Gila county just recom
pense for the loss of revenue en
tailed by the construction of the
Tonto and Salt river roservoir and
reimbursement for the increased ex
penditure of money with which our
county has been burdened arising
from tho necessary policing of a
largo tract of land withdrawn from
the revenue producing lands of this
county.
This Is the language and promise of
the democratic party of Gila county,
a plank of their platform. Do tho peo
ple of tho county approve of this? If
they do, they should vote the democrat
ic ticket. Tho republicans make no
such promise.

SA YINGS OF MRS. SOLOMON.
Being the Confessions of the Seven Hundredth Wife.)
TRANSLATED BY MAUD MARIE
Hearken, my daughter, and bo wise. Work that thou be not worked!
For tho ways of a man aro cunning and his heart is full of cozy comors.
Verily, I say unto you, it is easier to draw forth a secret from tho
Sphinx than to draw from thy husband's chum tho secrets of thy spouse,
whero he hath been tho night before and whether or not he goeth to
luncheon with his stenographer.
Behold a man will lio oven unto the woman whom ho lovcth in order
to protect her husband whom ho hateth from her wrath.
Yea, as tho gluo in the gluo pot do men cling ono to another, but
women aro as a hat held together with pins Independable.
For no man knowcth what another may knoweth about HTM. there
fore, keep they all sllcnco in a bond of mutual blackmail.
Oh, daughter, what is this secret thing they know of ono another that
each man who carcsseth thco shouldsay unto thee, "Let none other but
ME do this thing. Trust nono other of my sex, for lo! I know 'cm!"
Yet if a man inviteth thco to his bachelor flat, say not "Nay," lest ho
think thco a prudo; say rather "Yoa, I will como gladly; for I adoro bach
elor flats. WHEN shall I tell my mother to bring me?" And watch his
face.
THE PEOPLE'S PAPER
Realizing that it's strength as a
moulder of public opinion is to be
guaged only In tho measure in which it
is honored with public confidence, the
Silver Belt at all times invits expres
sions of opinion by the public.
"The Peoplo's Forum" In any paper
Is one of its most interesting depart
ments, for thcro may bo seen oxactly
what is though of any matter of great
public interest, thcro are obtained sug
gestions which may bo of vital impor
tance to tho public welfare, and which
may never have been thought of ' by
tho newspaper man who Is all-too-frc-quently
overburdened with work.
Unfortunately tha public of Globe has
not,hcretofore, taken duo advantago of
this opportunity for giving expression
to what they think and feci concerning
tho questions of the day. In this issue,
tho Silver Belt carries, under the head
of "Tho people's Forum," two very
interesting communications ono giving
the details for a hitherto unrecorded
Indian fight and accounting for the
finding of an old riflo barrel on Pinto
Creek by Deputy Sheriff Henderson, the
other advancing somo forceful argu
ments in favor of Mark A. Smith as a
candidato for territorial delegato to con
gress from Arizona.
The column is open to everybody.
To bo sure, nothing libelous or out
of reason will bo published, but the
Silver Belt will always bo glad to give
spaco to any reasonable and decont com
munication, no matter what may be the
subject treated or the position taken
by the writer. The only condition is
that the author sign his letter not nec
essarily for publication, as tho namo
will bo withhold upon request and a nom
de plums substituted, but as a guarantee
of good faith upon tho part of the cor
respondent. If tho Prince of Bulgaria elects to
assume tho title of "Czar of tho Bul
garians," we believe ho will bo inviting
moro trouble. We do not think "Czar"
a popular title these days; any moro
so, perhaps, than "Sultan," a handlo
used by another neighboring potentate.
On the whole, "King" ought to fill
tho bill.
"While on the subject of names,
Ohoope, Ga., has just voted Itself
"dry," says the Omaha Bee. A useless
and queer proceeding, evidently, espec
ially In view of the fact that tho legis
lature attended to that little matter for
Ohodpee over a year ago.
There Is a growing impression that
it will not require the addition of many
extra pages to tho average daily addi
tion of the newspapers of tho land to
carry the lists of campaign contribu
tions, this year no matter when they arc
published.
Tha French countess wandering In
Africa should got all tho advertising
she can out of It right now. Sho could
n't expect to bo'.'noro than a ten-twenty-thirty
attraction on that circuit this
time next year.
It must relievo Mr.NLoeb somewhat,
however to seo Mr. Hitchcock blamed
for a few things.
Tho report that Gov. Haskell sedretly
contributed $20,000 to tho democratic
campaign fund probably impressed his
successor in tho party trcasuryship as
something entirely too good to bo true.
..Harry Thaw says he Is unalterably
determined to cut loose from his wife
forover. Harry's efforts to establish
his sanity appear to bo more consistent
lately than over before.
Tho Czar of Russia's pet yacht Is
named Standard. Fortunately for tho
Czar, however, ho Is not standing for
reelection this year.
Ifj all tho people who havo not already
made up their minds concerning Taft
and Bryan were corraled, wo expect
they would constitute a mighty small
bunch, after all.
Eugene V. Debs seems abundantly
blessed with that saving graco which
prevents a really Intelligent man from
taking himself too seriously all tho
time.
"Then, then will you love mo, and
still no less, when tho grass waves above
my dreamlessness?" If you mean us,
Alfred, wo must confess our one best
bet 13, we guess yes.
Vota for Fred Nymyer for county
superintendent of public schools.
Go it, October! So far you aro a

A voto for Fred Nymyer means a vote
for better county schools. He's an edu
cator as well as "a nice man."
Stomach troubles would moro quickly
disappear if tho idea of treating tho
cause, rather than the effect, would
come into practice. A tiny, inside, hid
den nerve, says Dr. Shoop, governs and
gives strength -to the stomach. A branch
also goes to the Heart, and ono to the
Kidnoys. When these "insido nerves''
fail, then tho organs must falter. Dr.
Shoop 's Restorative is directed speci
fically to these failing nerves. Within
48 hours after starting tho Restorative
treatment patients say they realize a
