BY SALE OF MINING CLAIMS.
TUCSON, October ES.-okn Scanlon,
a v4l known mining man of this dis
trict, H sa'd to bo minus $1000 owing
to a visit ho paid to tho "bad lands,"
better known ns Gay alley.
It would cccm that 8canlon, who is
about 60 years of age, rocently received
something over $20,000 through tho salo
of mining property in which ho had
been interested. Saturday he went to
tho bank, deposited all but $2500 and
gave $1000 of this to h's niece, whom
ho saw off on nn early morning train
Sunday. Ho thcu told tho cabman to
take him to his residence of Broadway,
but it appears that instead of' doing
this tho joliu drovo him to the glittering
light diitr'ct and thoro left him.
Wallapai Clark, his mining partner,
becamo suspicious when ho did not turn
up nt tho hotel, and, seeking Policeman
Moon, started off in soarch for him.
About 11 o'clock in tho morning, Sun
day, they found him In tho homo of ono
of tho women in the tenderloin, liquor
hnving got n Httlo tho best of him.
When taken home, Scanlon was minus
$1000 of the wnd ho had with him
when ho left his nieco nt tho depot, but
could not account for tho disappearance
of his bank roll.
Onco boforo when Scanlon enmo to
Tucson with a p'lo of money, ho was
rolled for somo $700, nnd it is belioved
bo was dealt with in a liko manner this
time. As on tho former occasion, the
cab driver was tho ono who had taken
him to iho red light district.

Chief of Polico Moore's ofllco yesterday
and presented a letter of introduction
from Chief Higgy of that city and po
litely requested Leo Troutmnn, who was
on duty nt tho time, to restore to him
his wife, whom ho said, a Jap named
Sumi T. Sumeo had stolen from him in
an unguarded moment.
Sumoo said that Naknmurn, who
worked as a cook in San Frnncisco, was
sent out by his employer to purchao
bomo vegetables. On the way to tho
grocers ho mot Mrs. Nakomura and
showed her $75 or more which he hud
been given to purchase tho vegetables
Summco and Mrs. Nakamura at once
plannod a honeymoon, and that was tin
last tho husband saw of his wife. He
at onco offered a reward of $50 for her
recovery. "I would havo offered
more," ho explained to Troutmnn, "ns
the honorable lady was quito dear to me
nnd I wihcd very much to look once
moro at tho sunshine of her face, but
nlns, it was all I had."
Through n Japanese newspaper pub
lished in San Frnncisco, Nnknraura
learned that the couplo had gone to'
Phoenix. After hoeing Chief Biggy he
started for this city at once.
Sumeo and Mrs. Nakamura wero lo
cated at tho Hardwjck hotel, where
they had been for scvornl days. They
wcro both arrested and taken to" tho
station. Nnkaraura explained that all
he wanted was his wife, nnd rather than
be placed in jail sho consented to go
with him. Bcforo she went hwny with
her husband sho passed tho contents of
her pockctbook over to Sumce to sup
ply him with littlo luxuries whilo in
jail. Sumeo will bo detained until word
is received from Chief Biggy as to his
disposition.
