Andy Bates Dead Andy Bates, formerly of Kelvin, late ly a resident of tho Salt river valley, died last Monday of consumption. However, with tho return of bet ter financial conditions tho business is again increasing here as is shown by tho collection of $3,575.50 in fees by the auditor during December, tho largest business month since last June. The shrinkage in business during 190S, mado a difference of nearly $20,000 in fees for the torritory. SUDDENLY III ARMT PAYMASTER, WHO WAS ROBBED OF $35,000 TIAOatia AtTTAV I fOOOJDO XXTTX. TUCSON, January 5. Information from Washington states that Major J. M. Wham, retired, dropped dead sud denly on the stroct near his home in that city. Major Wham, was stationed nt one time in this territory and was well known in Tucson, no was the ar my paymaster who was held up and robbed of $35,000 in money about fif teen years ago between Willcox and San Carlos. Owing to the big sum which was so cured by tho robbers, tho case attracted national nttcntion. Major Wham, with a sergeant namod Brown as his guard, Started from TucBon with $35,000 for Ft. Apacho to pay off the officers and soldiers at that post. Thinking that if ho traveled with but ono guard, his trip would attract but )ittlo attention, Major Wham do parted from this city. In somo way, however, tho fact that ho was carrying a large sum of money became known and a short distance out of Willcox tho paymaster was suddenly confronted by a masked party heavily armed. Tho bandits commanded Major Wham and tho sergeant with him to throw up their hands. Instead of complying with tho demand tho paymaster and the sol dier opened fire on tho robbers and a pitched battle ensued. In the fight Ma jor Wham was severely but not fatally wounded while the sergeant was shot six times. To tho surprise of tho phy sicians whoattended him the sergeant recovered. Several parties living in the Gila val ley wcro arrested and charged with tho robbery. They ycro, however, ac quitted after a trial before a jury in Tucson. The stolen money was never iccovered. After his retirement several years ago, Major Wham took up a residence in Washington. SAFFORD, January 5. Mrs. J. C.
