A Now Postmaster for Clifton
After a suspense of many months tho

ment of postmaster at tho Clifton of
fice, according to a telegraph message,

Steel Bridge for Chase Creek
The Arizona Copper company is just
in receipt of a now steel bridge which
will Co installed across Chase creek just
above tho smelter. The Clifton Era says
it is much higher than the old one and
will alolw rnoro water and debris to
pass during tho floods. A force of men
arc now at work on tho foundation and
tho bridge will bo installed as soon
as possible.
Bare Species of Swan
Two Trumptor swnnB (Olor buccin
ator) were killed at tho flowing Wells
ranch Monday morning, says tho Tuc
son Star. One was a young, the other
an adult bird, the latter being snowy
white with tho exception of bill, loves
and feet, which in the genus are black.
Theso birds when young dincrmatcrial
Iy in color from tho adults, being a sla
ty blue. Although not common, the
bird is by no means rare, as it is dis
tributed partly throughout the interior
of North America and breeds from Iowa
and tho Dakotas northward, but mainly
north; wintering from Southern Brtfish
Columbia to tho Gulf pf Mexico and
Southern California, they arc seldom
seen hereabouts because of tho lack of
open water. They have, however been
sen and killed pretty much all over tho
territory.

Tho United States civil service com
mission announces an examination on
January 20 in Phoenix, Tucson and
Prcscqtt rn Arizona and in other states,
of applicants for certification as cli
gibles to various positions In connection
with tho printing trades. Ono will bo
tho position of pressman in tho gov
ernment printing oflico at $4 per day.
Another will bo for tho position of press
feeder (female), either cylindor ox
platen press, at 25 cents an hour, in
the government printing office. Others
will be for printers at 50 cents an
hour, printer linotype operator at GOc,
an hour, eight hours per day in each
case, in tho government printing office
in Washington.

drew Sago of Yuma, and Bqrt Milton
of Bisbcc, pulled off at Tucson last
Friday night, Sage was declared the
victor, winning two out of tbree falls.
Orange Trees Killed.
As tho result pf an cmployq mistak
ing n barrel of nitrate of soda' for
some kind of fertilizer, which ho pour
ed around orange trees in the Ward
grovo northeast of tho city, thirty fine
trees valued by the owners at $1000,
have been ruined and arc dying, Tho
barrel of nitrate was found by the
employe in a shed, and not knowing
what clso it could bo for, thought it
was to be used on tho orchard. From
tho reports its effects were speedy. No
other causo can bo assigned for the
death of this part of. tho grove. Tho
Ward grovo was purchased last year
by J. L. Irvin and associates and is
ono of tho largost in the valley.
Construction Work Begun.
Construction work on tho Mexico &
Colorado lino began at Courtland Jan
uary 7. A considerable amount of ma
terial was unloaded thero during tho
past few days, and teams and wagons
have been brought into the camp for
the beginning of tho worl Powers &
O'Connor of El Pnso, have tho contract
for the grading and they havo about
one hundred men in tho outfit.
New Prison Advancing.
Territorial Auditor Sims Ely has ro
turned from a trip on official business
to Florence, where ho found very sat
isfactory progress being mado ou, tho
prison. Says tho Gazette. "The in
closure wilj probably be finished by tho
first of March," said Mr. Ely today.
"All tho different departments of con
struction arc? working co-ordinately, so
that when tho walls aro erected, tho
entire structuro will bo close to com
pletion. With tho present progress this
jwill.be about tho .first ofMav Tho
work on tho prison is now about half
completed. Forms for the radial build
ing aro now standing, the foundations
for nil tho buildings and tho machinery
havo been laid. Tho prisoners arc work
ing as energetically nnd arc us well
contented with their employment as
the other laborers. They arc being well
fo,d and the general health is good."
Boping Contest Possible.
It is reported that a challenge has
been issued by itfeb McMahon and Bus
tor Gardiner to Fred Moore and Echols
for a roping contest for $G00. The
former team"" announce themselves as
ready and willing to take on tho lat

weeks. Tho Douglas Dispatch says:

Douglas Tax Bate.
Tho assessed valuation of the city of
Douglas, inside of tho corporation lim
its, is $3,000,000, and the assessed val
uation of the school district, including
tho smelters nnd manufacturing plants,
is about $0,00p,000. Tho assessed val
uation is mado on a basis of 60 per
cent of tho total valuation, making
tho real valuation of all the property
within tlc city $3,000,QOO and tho to
tal valuatiqn inside of tho school dis
count) is 2.-15 cents on tho dollar, and
within tho city limits, tho tax is ten
trict $10,000,000. The iax levy for
colunty and territorial tar, in Cochiso
mills, making a total tax in Douglas
of 3.45 cents on tho dollar of assessed
valuation. Cochiso county has no bond
ed indebtedness and the city of Douglas
has a bonded indebtedness of only $75,
000, which wore issued for the sewer
system.
Jerome .Has Another Smelter.
The Hull Copper compuny's smelter
is expected .to bo blown in early in
February. President G. W. Hull in
formed the Journal-Miner that develop
ments in tho mines tapped by the Dil
lon tunnel were satisfactory, the ore
bodies showing improvement as tho
work progresses.
Pioneer Betums.
After an absence of twenty-six years,
Ed Tcvlin, a Tombstone pioneer, return
ed hero yesterday, says tho Prcscott
Journal-Miner. Ho informed his old
time friends that he was glad to be in
Arizona again 'and said that he intend
ed to make this territory his permanent

In reply to questions by C. A. Sever
ance, government counsel, he said tho
Phoenix k Eastern ran through a dis
trict in which gold, silver, iron and
copper were rained, but the mines were
not worked much now.
"Beforo the Southern Pacific took
over the connecting lines, he said, "ore
was smelted at a smelting plant cot
far from the mines, but after the trans
fer the Southern Pacific naturally pre
fcrred to have the ore sent to El Paso
for smelting."
Mqrphy promised counsel for the dc
fendants to produce at a future bearing
statements as to tho amount of froight
shipped over the Phoenix & Eastern
railroad prior ot the merger.
In reply to a question as to the
status of the Atchison, Topeka & Sao
ta Fe with regard to transcontinental
traffic, Murphy said everything was in
