Preliminary railroad surveys, which'
have been completed, within tho past
few clavB, give the assurance that with
in a short time "construction work will
bo commenced which will put Globe
on tho main Htotu of the Southern Pa
cific lino from Los Angeles to tho oast.
Tho survey is thai of a branch lino
of tho Gila Valloy from Cutter to tho
Superior & Boston property, northeast
of town. While this -work will bo of
only local benefit primarily, it is re
ported from authentic sources that this
is 'but the beginning of a cut oil be
twoon Globe and Durango, Colp.
Extcnsivo coal fields are to le open
ed up in tho Durango district. It u
understood that this district is to be
given hotter railway facilities iu the
Immediate future.
According to tho route which has
been surveyed, tho lino will branch
off at Cutter and go back of tho hills
east of town to a connection with the
Arizona Commercial company's rail
road, northeast of tho Superior & Bos
ton proporty. From this point the lino
will travel northeast to tho head of
Irene gulch, thence over tho Mineral Inients may bo expected at any time,
Farm and the .Arizona & Colorado
property to a connection with the Mi
ami lino, just north of tho 0. i). Key
stone, near tho mouth of tho Miami
Hats.
It is understood that tho reason for
nt putting tho new line directly through
Globe is to relieve congestion which
would occur, through thd necessity for
removing ores from tho local mines and
bringing in supplies.
With tho line completed between
Winkloman and Ban Carlos, which will
connect the Gila Valley wjth tho Pjioe
nlx& Eastern and tho new lino to
Durango opened,- Globe will bq on the
main blcm of tho Southern. Pacific,
which will in a great-measuro supplant
tho present lino now in use throiij;Uout
thch southern part of tho territory.
Somo distance will be saved by the
uso of tho now lino, but tho big foatur.j
lies in the fact that heavy .grades, which
are now a big source of expense, will
bo eliminated.

Tho third tiro within three days to
emanate from the ravagos of a fire bug,
destroyod the Whalen house, at the foot
of Blako street, shortly after 9 o'clock
last night.
The houso was vacant, having been
unoccupied for moro than a week. There
is apparently no question that the fire
wa3 of incendiary origin.
Tho blaze started, according tb spec
tators, in tho south end of tho build
ing. Flames seemed to spread through
tho entire front of tho house, almost
instantaneously. The Hash seemed 16
be that which would como from the
ignition of a koroseno soaked intorior.
Before spectators could arrive from
tho Wodgo saloon, but a short distance
away, tho whole front part of tho
building was a mass of flames.
Before tho firo company could get ita
apparatus on tho ground, tho houso
was ho near consumed that attempts to
check the flames would have been use
less and the water was never turned
on.
Tho houso was a complete loss. It
contained no furniture, everything hav
ing boon removed by tho former occu
pants.
Tho houso was that formerly occupied
by Mrs. Boyle, who broko into tho lime
light in a rather unoaviablo fashion a
few weoks ago wTien ofllccrs of the
Children's Homo society took five of
her children away .from her because
hho was allowing thorn to live not only
in squalid nurroundiigs, but in the
prowncO of vice and dcgregationl
Tho houso bolonged to Mrs. James
Whnlcn and was a part of tho Oavigan
estate. Tho houso was Rn old one and
not of any great value.
Serias of Fires.
Tho fact that so many incendiary
fires have occurred within tho past few
days, indicates very strongly that an
insane fire bug is at work in the city.
Early last wook, tho homo of II. C.
Coflec,; on Noftsger hill was burned
to tho ground. Tho flro happened at
about 10 o'clock at night. Origin a
mystery. ' ,
Provions'tothat, a home on the old
hall ground belonging to C. W. Mehl,
and unoccupied nt tho time, burned to
tho ground late at night.
Early Monday morning firo destroyed
a house belonging to G. W. Henderson,
at' Mosquito and Third streets. This
tire occurred shortly after midnight. rA
flnhh of light and a muffled oxplosion
were tho first indications' of tho blavl!.
Henderson had no enemies, as far as
can bo learned, who might have been
prompted to fird the building.
Mysterious Suspect.
At last night's fire, a man was s'cen
watching tho fire in au absorbed man
ner. As soon as spectators began ask
ing questions as to how the fire started,
ho slipped away and was cecn no mora.
A man answering his descriptions ii.s
been seen- at other reccut fires, of
which tho origin ,was questionable or
palpably incendiary.
Ho is described as being of medium
height," thin, with an unshaven faco
and wearing a groyish, rather faded
suit of clothing: A soft black felt hat,
drawn well over his vyes, masked the
upper part of his face.
His action at last night's fire were
slightly susplcigus, but when ho wi?
looked for, by those who would have
questioned him, ho wasjnowhere to be
found.
Insanity Scspccted.
It is believed that by somo peculiar
stroak of insanity the perpetrator of
these successful attempts at arson has
applied the torch, simply to satisfy a
mad desiro to witness a spectacular
blaze. Q
His plan? have apparently been
worked out with fiendish cunning, for
in no case has he been seen to leave
tho premises.
It is evident that his plans a laid
ahead of time, with a fuse to arranged
that the fire will not occur until ho is
at a safe distance.
The olliccrs aro on the look out lor
tho man and even though he may n -t
be captured, tho fact. that his, general
description is known may prevent a in
currence of the recent fires.
