forcing prices lower, which brought
about liquidation. The nunkct is still
a purely professional affair, and will
probably continue to present a more
or less irregular appearance for some
days, or until something deflnito in the

The crop situation is the domiuant
feature, and the courso of prices will

close tho market rallied on short cover
ing, and at the close prices of the most
active stocks showed improvement.
The Hostoh market showed consider
able activity today; liquidation was
noticeable in Lake, but buying was
consistent. The ndvanco in North Hutte
yesterday brought out selling orders
ihiHinoruing; but toward tho close the
tock gained all rhe loss, and made new
high figure for tho move. Insiders sup
porting Noith Lake kept tho stock
.steady. Halance of the list was dull,'
iwith no selling pressure.

Ontario, to the Montreal Mail aud Em
pire shows what the Canadian press
thinks of Globe's champion drillers:
All Cobalt went down to the athletic
ground todny to see Page and Pickius,
champion drillers from Globe, Arizona,
drill forty three inches in a thousand
dollar contest. Previously the best lo
cal team could onlv drill 28 inches. The
westerners won thousands of dollars by
backing themselves to drill over forty
luches.
Other teams competing were local, but
the second wns thirteen inches behind
the giant westerners and the third was
four Inches behind them again.
The prize winners were: Page and
Pickens, entered as from Temiskainiug
mine. 131-8 inches, $1,000; M. MePhnll
and H."MncD6nnId, Gifford mine, 30 5-8
inches, $500; Nipissjng team, 20 3-8
niches, $25U.
Elovcu teams entered, but several
were scratched, including last year's
champions from Kerr Lake.

NAIVASHA, Sunday, July 18. (Cor
respoudence.) Theodore Roosevelt and
his party had not been expected to reach
Saigai-Sai boforo the twentieth instant,
but having had success greater than
they anticipated in tno Sotik nnd Qua
so Nyiro coutny, they decided to como
to tho lake and try for hippo with
Captain Attenborough, it. N., retired,
owner of the Saigai-Sai farm.
Tho last few days on the way to
Saigai-Sai the party had to make long
marches over a practically laterless
country and once whihi they reached a
Ayaterholo they had been making for
they found it was absolutely dry. There
fore tho party had to go into camp
without water. It was found here that
the food supplies almost had given ont
aud Europeans and natives alike had to
go on half rations.
Host Not Home; Hunt Goes On
The pnrty leached the farm on the
morning of July 12, but found that
Commander Attenborough had gone ov
er to Naivasha for supplies. Mr. Roos
evelt, however, 1was not disturbed by
this and the scientists soon were busy
with their gUns collecting birds and
mammals.
The camp was pitched on the lake
shore which is densely' friuged with
payyrus, thorn trees and brush.. The
camp was sandy and- dusty.
The tents of tiie white men were set
up in a row In the pront of the camp,
with tho horse lines and porters' tents
in tho jear of them. The porters, at
noce were set to work building a grass
shed for tho skin drying and thoy niade
quick work of it. The shed was con
structed of wood and thatched with
grass.
Correspondent at Beach
On tho 14th the correspondent rode
twenty-five mies on the bicycle to the
'camp and was warmly greeted by the
! scientists and Mr. Taritou. Mr. Roos
evelt and Kennit were out in a launch
hippo shooting with Commander Atten
borough, his brother, and Mr. Cuniiing
hame, and did not return until sunset.
Mr. Hoosevelt's warm greetings were
rpmpent-ntion for the tryiug bicycle
ride of the morning,
The following day Mr. Roosevelt, Kor
mit, the Attcnboroughs, Mr, funning

Globe Has the Last Word in
History of Faithful Dogs
Scores of stories have boon related ie
garding the faihtfulness of dumb an',
mals, but Globe has one which is a. par
allel for any which have so far been
published.
"Nigger," a shaggy haired canine
belonging to Davo Reed, -master mechan
ic of the Gila Valley line, followed his
master from Globe mor6 thnn fifty miles
down the local railroad, when. Reed left
for Pearce last Monday and it was not
until tho dog gave out from exhaustion
that he gave up tho unequal race be
tween him nnd the train and started on
his way back to Globe.
Ho arrived yesterday, nearly starved,
and so footsore that he could hardly
walk. Whon ho found his master, who
had in the meantimo returned to Globe,
he sprang at him with a joyous bark
and then nearly collapsed from exhaus
tion. .This was not Nigger's first trip of
this kind. Severnl months ago, when
an engine was'boing tested, he followed
tho iron horse for several miles down
crew saw tho dog in the distance and
the engino was stopped until he ap
peared. Nig was then taken aboard and
given a ride in the cab for the balance
of tho trip.
There is hardly a man working in Mie
local yard who" can board or alight from
the running board of an engine any bet
ter than can Nigger. He often rides
from one end of the ward to the other
and he seldom' takes a spill in nlight
ing, no matter how fast the engine ma
bo going.
Whenever the shop whistlo blows,
Nigger is on the job. With his muzzle
pointing straight towaid the sky he lets
out a doleful howl which lasts until tho
whistle has ceased blowingv No otlTer
whistle disturbs hinr, but he joins in the
chorus with the shop sitcii, no matter
wheu it blows. 6

LA CROSSK, Wis., August 23. Made
mad by a combination of bee and rat
tlesnake poison, R. Lane, a farmer of
Trench creek, fought his companions for
three hours until medical aid arrived.
One of the men killed a rattlesnake
and donnig a pair of gloves, skinned tho
reptile. In the afternoon Lane bor
rowed the gloves to wear while loading
lumber. , .
While engaged in this work he dis
turbed a nest of little yellow bees
which stuug him on the neck aud arm.
In fighting them he kept rubbing the
gloves on the spots where the bees had i
punctured his skin. Tho poison took J
effect at once and Lane became a man

The Way He Helped the Housemaid

A good story Is told at the expense
of a constable In rural England, says a
writer In the Loudon Telegraph.
Not long ago a young and pretty
housemaid arrived at the big house of
the neighborhood, and it wns observed
that our friend's beat often took hhn
In that direction. At first she seemed
to resent his advances, but suddenly
she changed altogether, and the course
of true love appeared to run smooth
for n time.
One night he called rather later than
usual. It was dark, rnd li! fair one
greeted ' him' somewhat coolly, he ,
thought. !

when she suddenly declared that she ,

the door was fast, securely screwed on
the outside by the burglars.
W.hen Jim eventually roused the
house and was released from his pris
on the burglars and plate, together
with the pretty housemaid (a confeder
ate, had disappeared. Moreover, the
constable's position took a good deal
of explaining away.
