Advocates of the assessment plan for
paying for proposed sewer extensions
at Phoenix appeared before the coun
cil at its last meeting with a strong
plea for their pet scheme. The plan
of payment is tho chief obstacle to the
immediate building of tho now sewers.
Claudo Hatfield, tho famous Califor
nia lainmakcr, having heard of tho
drouth that is reported erroneously to
havo devastated most of Arizona, has
written to tho mayor of Tombstone that
ho will furnish all tho moisture they
need down there for the modest sum of
$2,000.
Albort .T. Tony, alias Lester Pierce,
has been arrested at Mesa charged with
burglarizing tho New York s'oro at
Tempo. Ho is also charged with mar
rying a Phoenix widow a few months
ago under an assumed name, and of
beating and otherwiso mistreating her
when she discovered his deception.
Lowell saloons won their contention
that they should bo granted licenses by
a decision of tho supreme court at
Phoonix last week. Licenses had been
withheld by the sheriff of Cochise
county under tho statu'ie that no
license should be granted for the op
