Pago Six DAILY ARIZONA SILVER BELT j Sunday, May 8, 1910. SOON SHIP HOIST FOR DOMINION WORKINGS t I Want You to Know "A J AX" The Ideal Body Battery with Electric Suspensory iMay Temporarily Suspend A Shaft for Repairs on Third Level NO SUSPENSION OF HOISTING NEEDED What It Is and How It Cures New Turbines Recently Re ceived to Bo Installed in Near Future 'flip management of tho 01(1 Dominion mine is contemplating shutting down tlio A shaft temporarily, whilo repairs on tho station at tho third level are un der way. A bad caVe-in wiiich has oc curred above the third level station has been threatening, to demolish a part of j the third level and for tho past month ineffectual attempts have been made to repair tho defect without discontinuing hoisting through the A shaft, which is tho main ono of tho Old Dominion mine. About two weeks ago a slight eayoin injured tlio sliatt tinbers. Tho shut down of tho A shaft vill probably not persist over two or three days, and, in the meantime, the ore and wnsto will be hoisted up the It shaft and convoyed out through tho tunnel to tho bins' at the, surface. In the surface tunnel a liad grade must be repaired beforo tho ore is removed in this manner. I Kxcavations for the new hoists which . the, company has purchased for installa tion at tho A shaft are now under way near the engine houso. Ilcforo tho hoist is installed it will bo nccessaryto make excavations sixty ieet squnro and ten feet deep in solid dacite. A forco of men is woikitig there now with n ma rliin.6 drill and tho muck is being re moved by a scries of belt conveyors. Tho hoist will bo shipped from tho Noid-i berg factory June 1. Whilo tho A shaft is, temporarily closed, production will bo continued un der difficulties, as the oro will have 'to be trammed from the west side of tho luino to tho B shaft, a distance of about 2,000 feet. Tho new steam turbines which recently arrived at the Old Do minion plant have been unboxed and aro ready for installation The turbines which were furnished, by tlio General Klectrle company, are o. horizontal typo after a late model which has been used very littlo in this country. The Old Dominion company plans to concentrate all its power equipment at tho smelter power house except that needed to run tho hoists, Consequently, the compres sors have been taken out of tho minn power houso and installed at the smel ter. Tho object in concentrating tho power of the plant in this manner is to get as many engines as possible, exhaust ing into tho turbines. Thq exhaust will bo two pounds gauge pressure and the turbines will run two generators. At tho concentrator a motor Is being iustalled in place of the steam, engine formerly in use. Tho motor will bo placed above (ho first floor so as to drivo tho main power shaft horizontally and thereby diminish the length of belt ing and got a greater dcgrc.0 of effi ciency. The changes of formation encountered by tho crosscut driven southeast from tho Williams shaft, on the 000-foot level at tho property of tho National Mining Exploration company are arousing much intciest among people interested in tho development woik being carried on in the locality. As was announced somo time ago, tho crosscu'c struck a stringer of .high grade oro in tho. form of copper carbonnte running as high as thirty-nine per cent copper. This ore was struck at a dis tance of fifty feet from 'the Williams shaft and piovcd to bo about eigh teen i;iches wide. Since passing: through this stringer tho ciosscut has been driven for about thirteen feet through shalo containing u great deal of iron and showing much copper stain. With in tho kifct two or three days, the cross cut has passed out of sfiale into quartz ite. This change is regarded as being very favorable to tho future develop ment of an ore body, ns the hanging wall of the Black Hawk vein on tho Arizona Commercial property adjoining is quurtzite. Thus, it is possible that the formation in which the crosscut is being driven at present is the hanging-wall of a copper-bearing lode. Tho total length of the crossc-it from, tlue Williams shaft is now about sixtyeigki feet. Tho ninety-horsepower boiler recent ly puVcha.sed by the National Mining Exploration company has been installed nt the Willia'ms shaft and is working; .ur a satisfactory manner. Superintendent 1J. V. Woodward is employing about twenty five men in development worit. grows wider and Contains much iron and some copper stain, thus giving promiso of tho exibtenco of copper deposits at greater depth. At the Telfair shaft, crosscutHng is being continued on tho 500-foot level in tho expectation of opening tho Old Dominion vein, which lies about 1,100 feet south of tho shaft. So far, this crosscut has been driven 815 feet. For the past few weeks, tho 'formation en countered by this crosscut has .been shale, .showing, occasional iron stain. Superintendent N. A. Nelson is em ploying about twenty men in explorn torv work. SECOND DRILL HOLE ON LIVE OAK Late Developments Promise Striking of Ore iit the Near Future- SUPERIOR a WILL DO DRILL PROSPECT Z M en SHOWS SI Late Developments Promise Striking of Ore in the Near Future The churn drill being used in pros pecting the Live Oak property fn ad vance of tho underground drifting is now at work nt its second locution -00 feet west of tho first one. The second holo is forty cet'deep and is in the granite, capping common to the Miami mining district. The first churn drill hole encountered 1715 feet of chalcocito ore. One of tho notably favorablo develop ments in the underground work at tho tiivo Oak mine is tho driving of drift No. 208 on thw second level. This drift has passed eastward through forty-five feet of sulphide oro of good eommeivial grade. Tho vertical shaft, where- sink ing was resumed several weeks agoy Iras been put down 109 feet below tile- "00 foot level, thus showing to date a most promising veitival extent of oro. At the property of the Superior & Globe Copper company, arrangements are being mado for prospecting with diamond dilh. The drilling will prob ably be done under contract by the Sullivan Drill company. According to present plans, one Holo will bo put down on tho vein from the bottom of an eighty-foot winze sunk from one of tho drifts on the 050-foot level. The object of this 'hole will be, of course, to ex plore the vein at depth and thus as certain whether the absence of copper in the workings so far was merely due to the fact that leaching has taken place or that this particular vein is not copper-bearing. So far as showa by drifting and tho linking of the winze, tho vein carries a great deal of Iron, much of which, is rather hard. It i possible that cross cutting may bo commenced shortjy from tho bottom of the winze, to determine the width of the vein at that depth and to explore the ground along both foot and hanging walls. A second' holo will probably be drilled horizontally from the face of the cross cut which has been driven for a dis tance of about 350 feet northward from tho vertical shaft. The material through which this crosscut was driven foe the most part was diabase, containing very little mineral, and the face of the cross ci.'t is now iu rouk. of this kind. part of the property wil lexplorc, to greater depth, tho Bonanza lode, art which good gold values liavo been found pear the surface. ) Steps are now being taken to develop a greater water supply for tho ten-stamp .mill, which has been treating tho Lost Gulch ore. As soon as the amount of water availablo is increased, tho mill will probably resume running and, as in the past, will be supplied with about 'forty tons of oro daily from the eompar ativcly shallow workings in tho immedi ate vicinity of the mill. The oro from this property aVcragcs $23 to tho ton Jn gold. A HAPPY JTATHER Is soon turned to a sad one if he has to walk the floor every night with a crying baby. MaGee-'s. WARRIOR IS SINKING L E At tho Arizona Michigan propel ty, development work is being carried on at the Blackbird ami Telfair shafts. The Blackbird shaft has been sunk to a depth of 215 feet and levels liavo been established at 100 feet and 200 feet respectively. On the 100-foot "level, about twenty-two feet of crosscutting has been done. At a depth of 200 feet, a ciosscut has been driven southeast towaid tho foot wall for abou't eight feet and crosscutting northeast toward tho hanging wall has been advanced fivo feet. The shaft work has shown that at a depth of 200 feet the vein At tho Warrior mine, one of the gicatest permanent producers of Globe district, the sinking of the third churn drill holo is under way. This hole i already 225 feet deep and is boing put down on tho Winnio claim, west ot tho second churn drill location, and about 700 feet north of tho Scorpion claim on which tho Inspiration Copper company is now doing development work in a good giade of sulphide ore. (On the 230 and 300-foot levels of the iniuo, oro is being stoped for .shipment "to the El Paso smelter. At present these shipments amou'nt to from 03 to 100 tons of ore daily and the average copper con tent is being maintained as bus.nl at about 0.3 per cent. LOST GULCH WILL SIJJEEPER President Harrington Goes to Property with Neces sary Supplies COPPER REEF WILL RECEIVE HOISTS Two "Vertical Shafts and a Tunnel in Program, of Development Two forty-horsepower hoists for use on tho property of tho Copper Reef Con solidated Mines have just been shipped from the factory and will soon bo in stalled on the company's property, where two vortical shafts will bo sunk for development purposes. These shafts will bo about 1,200 feet apart and to connect with one of .them a tunenl will bo driven. Tho driving of the tunnel will bo accomplished by contract work and tho management has already an nounced that bids will be received for 100 feet of driving. General Manager S. W, Clawson ar rived in Globo several days ago for the purpose of attending- to business affairs in connection with the company's inter ests. Tho development of the Copper Reef property will bo watched with great in tercst, as its holdings, consisting of eighty claims, comprise, probably, the greatest area of mineral laud in one body held by any mining company in Arizona. As tho surface showings of this property are exceptionally favora ble, thero is great likelihood that a mine of remarkable value will be developed in the course of the next year or two, thus adding one more producer to tho list of paying mines already operating within a radius of thirtv miles of Globe. GAGTUS CROSSCUTS TO OLD PINTO SHAFT Drifts from Hamilton Shaft in Ore Sunning 3 and 4 Per Cent President .T. T. Harrington of the Lost Gulch United Mines left Globo for the property Thursday, takingvwith him supplies and tools necessary for continu ing development work oit tho group of gold claims which the company owns. The management of tho Lost Gulch United .Mined has decided to 3ink'lho Badger shaft to gieater depth. At present this shaft is 130 feet deep and about 100 feet of sinking will probably bo done, thus making tho shaft 230 1 feet deep. The developments at this. LITTLE MIAMI WILL E FORCE ENL G The manageemnt of tho Little Miami Mines company is making prep-irntions to begin operations on its property lying between tho lands of the Miami l op per company and tlm Warrior Develop ment company. A twenty-five-horsc-power hoist is about to be installed -ind as soon as tho equipment is complete, the binking of one of the old shafts to. greater depth will bc commenced. This shaft is now 110 feet deep and has only ono compaitment, bu't woikmcn are now engaged in enlarging it to two compartments. The location of tho shaft is on the Wild Air claim on the west end of the company's property consisting .i three On the 300-foot level of tho Hamil ton shaft of the Cactus mine, cross- cutting from the main west drift has just effected a connection with the Pin to shaft. As about 180 feet of water hail accumulated in the Pinto shaft, great caro bad to be used to avo'd in jury to employes in making the connec tion. At tho 400-foot level, the west drift will bo connected with tho Pinto with in a few weeks. The water will be pumped out through the Hamillon shaft. The drift at the 300 foot level has passed through the main fault into bur ren ground on tho Pinto property, but that on tho fourth level is continuously m oro within the Pinto line. Tho bub-level fifty feet above the third level and running north from tho raise located 200 feet north of the Ham ilton shaft and a short distance west of it is 150 feet long and continues iu the malachite vein. At a point fiftv feet north of the raise a crosscut is being driven eastward and twenty-fivo feet farther north a west crosscut is being started on tho sub-level. Eastward from the Hamilton shaft drifts are being driven on the third aud fourth, levels. The former is 530 feet long while the latter has been advanced 000 feet. At these distances from the shaft the ore assays three per cent cop per at the third level and four per cent at the fourth level. The ore is sulphide as iu the greater part of the nunc workings. No definite plan of procedure from the Pinto shaft has yet been made, but it is likely that development work will continue from this shaft as from the Hamilton. The fourth level of the Ham ilton will intersect tlTe Pinto shaft at a depth of 540 feet, at which depth the latter; shaft was bottomed after passing through ten feet of carbonate ore assaying fifteen per cent copper. Tools for the churn drill are expect ed to arrive in Globe at any time, but meanwhile the drill work is being de layed. W. H. Hamilton is in charge of operations. claims aggregating about si.t acies of mineral land on which schist condi tions very similar to those showing on the surface of tho Miami propel ty are in evidence. General Manager Richard Fleming will soon increase his woik'ug force materially for the purpose of hastening the exploration of the pi op erty as much as possible. For the pros out, Mr. Fleming will make lns head quarters in Globe, but ns soon as build nigs can be erected, the mine offices wiil be estaglished on tho property.
