JOHN MURDOCH came down on Friday to attend the Newell reception. Mrs. Mur doch was the guest of Mrs, Dun bar Newell from Thursday until Sunday. FROM A MEMBER of the Village Council we learni that after the 15th of this month the ordinances in regard to horses running loose on the public square and the streets of St. Joseph, and the dog ordinance, will be rigidly enforced. WE CALL ATTENTION to the card of Dr. P. J. Stricker, a ho has lo cated in St. Joseph for the prac tice of his profession. Dr. Strick er comes to us well recommended and we bespeak for hbn a cordial reception at the hands of our people. The doctor has not yet been able to secure an office and for the present can le found at his reidence-the Bass house. CROP CONDITIONS. RAIx 18 BADLY NEEDED in a large portion of the parish. Showers of past week partial and insufficient. Considerable cotton not up and some cotton ground yet to be broken.Both cotton and corn small 1 but good color and growing well Estimates from all over parish give a material increase in corn acreage over that of last season. WE OALL ATTENTION to the ad vertisement of the Gem Printing Company, of Natchez, which ap pears in this issue. This job print ing house has been in business only a few years, but has forged to the front purely on its merits and now occupies a prominent place among the printing and stationary houses in Natchez. They are prepared to do any kind of I job work desired and orders can be left for them at the GAZETTE office. Mas. W. M. DAVIDSON enter tained her friends very charming ly on Tuesday afternoon with a most enjoyable card party given in honor of Mrs. C. E. Newell. Six-handed euchre was played from five to half-past seven. The first Moody. Miss Ere Moore was the[ winner of the consolation prise, a lovely vase. After the game, de licious refreshments were served jC by the tea girls, Misses Alma New ton, Mellie Tallis and Katherine 8 Carry. It Nrws reached St. Joseph in the early part of the week of the burn- 3 ing of the store of Lynch & Meyers r at New Light, in this parish. The fire was discovered about 2 o'clock Saturday morning. Every effort o was made to cheek it, but without success. There was no insurance on building or stock, both totally t destroyed, the loss amounting to t about $4,000. The fire is believed E to have been the work of an in cendiary. The firm of Lynch & Meyers is composed of Meesrs. J. V R. Lynch and D. F. C. Newell held a very g S delightful reception from half d past eight to ten o'clock, in hon or of Mrs. Cecil E. Newell. The t house was artistically decorated i d with roses, mock orange flowers,i fernu and potted plants. The 1 f parlor was entirely in white and n green.
