THE NATCHEZ ELECTION, Chief of Police Ramsey has been paid a compliment by a majbrity of the electors who patteltpated in yes terday's primary which any man should appreciate and, frobmi his re marks last evening, he is senible to all that the majorty vote implied and is truly grateful therefor. Both can didates received a higher vote than was given them in the first event, and and there was a higher vote polled, an increase of M, with Chief lt#mE6y making a gain that ltaked btit one of the nuatmbf teoefed by Doughty Who wds li te first taeA. In that primary Doughty received 110 votes. Ramsey's gein was 109, as he received 366 votes In the first primary. Ityan's vote in the first primary was 407. Yesterday It wris 483, showing an increase of 66. The absence of the soldier *bte is believed to have been fatal to the cause of Ryan, at any rates the ma jority vote has been given to Chief Ramsey. It is an endorsement of his official conduct and it is given by a majority of the white electors of Nat chez, every one of whom has ex pressed his satisfaction with the work performed by the Chief.--Natchez Democrat. ______ L T. H. HARRIS TO SUCCEED ? ASWELL. 9 A special to the Times-Democrat ii from Baton Rouge, under date of 3rd [i inst.; says: 2 "Information received here to-day s from authoritative sources in New Or- s leans is to the effect that the Erst act 7 of Gov. Sanders on his return to the s Capital to-morrow will be to appoint 9 Thos. H. Harris of Claiborne parish 10 as the successor of Jas. B. Aswell, i State Superintendent of Education, li who tendered his resignation to the 12 Governsf to asreept the presidency of the State Normal School. The ap- 2 pointment of Mr. Harris is regard- 2 ed here as a most graceful act on the a part of the Governor, as the appoint ment is said to be strictly non-pbliti cal, and based entirely upon the fit ness of the appointee for the position, the Executive pursuing the policy of not allowling political affllatlons to en ter into the school systeti of the State. ki Bureau Report le The following repbrt ~f the eoffdl- fc tion of the cotton crop by States was o giVen out by the Census Banreau at de Washbington July 31st nlt: The rbport a deals with the condition between June o 26th and Jay 6th i July June July g Virginia 90 92 6 North Carolina ...... 89 99 67 8oath Carolln ........... 84 84 81 Alabsm .................... 72 u Mig*esippi 86 84 71 Lodfisanas 83 5 71 Texas ... .....................
