"A regiment of soldli rs were re cently drawn up one Sundl:ay for church parade. but the ch'lrch was being repaired and could onr'y hold half of them. "Sergeant-major." shclted the colonel, "tell all the men who don't want to go to church to fall cut on the reverse flank." Of course, a large number quickly and gladly aval.ed thcm eive(s cI the privilege. "Now. srgeant-manor " s1ld th' colonel. "dismiss all the men wh did not fall out an. march the others to church-they nccd it most." Heard From His Note in a Bottle While on his way to Germany abou" a year ago Edward Reese wrote hit name and address on a card, which he placed in a bottle, and after care fully sealing threw the bottle into the ccean about midway b-twccn the two continents. A day or two ago he received a letter from Theedore Schultz, dated at Brookings. S. D., in which Schultz informed him that he was the finder af the bottle. Schultz before coming to America rcsided on the coast of Denmark, and one day while strolling along the coast of that country dis covered and took possession of the bottle, which had floated ashore from mliocean.-Platt correspondence Mi. neapolis Journal. It may be that milk which con 'orms to the established standards is the best kind of milk, though many who have had experience deny that it is best for some purposes. But na ture, insists the Boston Transcript, will not be coerced. There is more nourishment and less waste in a bush el of fair sized potatoes than in a bushel of small ones, but if the in fluences of rain and sunshine have been so unevenly distributed that only small potatoes have grown we must be content. No potato standard wold change the results and to prohibit the sale of them ,'ould work general hardship. The cases are not exactly parallel, but it would perhaps be as easy to override natural forces by leg islative enactment in one cuase as in the other. THOSE TIES. "I didn't know young Snobberly really took any interest in politics." "Nonsense. He doesn't." "But I just heard him talking for the past ten minutes about 'party ties.' " "Oh! He means white lawn bows. -Catholic Standard and Times. Babies are t.. like their elders. Whatever happens p to be the namephase of the period in a which they made their advent, to that are they doomed. Just now Elizabeths P asd Jameses are being literally chris- b tcned by dozens, and Peters are alarm- a ingly prevalent.-Lady's Pictorial. t g The Era of Woman. c "If I were a man!" is surely a very d unnecessary cry these days. The epoch of the man is past; the twen- b tieth century is the era of woman. There is, with a few very slight ex ceptions, nothing that a woman, as a woman, cannot do, and do every bit an3 well as if she were a man.-From P. T. O. E Stitchery. The buyers of flne embroideries a har-e been predicting a famine in hand needlework for several seasons. A P multitude of new industries in France t have opened in recent years and , shown the French girls more lucrative means of livelitooJ than the old pa tient stitchery for which they are fa- t nous.-Philadelphia Record. Marriage Age Increased. It is generally admitted that the marriageable age of women has ad vanced considerably of recant years. Many a bride has long felt girlhood behind her before -he exchanges her vows at the altar, and there seem to be few young men nowadays who care to assume the respousibillics of mar ried life until they are in the financial position usually associated with mid 'lle age.-Philadelphia Record. Norway's Versatile Queen. Queen Maud of Norway has innum- I erable hobbies and recreations, many I of them being of a very useful and I practical nature. She devotes many I hours to sewing, wood carving, and I . bookbinding, and in regard to the lat ter work has turned out some really beautiful speelmens of the craft. Like 1 Queen Alexandra, her mother, Queen I Maud is very skilful with the camera, while such is her skill in outdoor 1 sports that she is her husband's con stant companion when his majesty in dulges in skating, skiing, motoring, and cycling excursions. At billiards Queen Maud can easily beat King lHaakon, while King Edward, himself a very skilful whist player, has con fessed that he could not teach his daughter much in regard to the game. -From Tit-Bits. Two-Headed Hatpine Are Needed. Have you noticed it? But no, of course you -haven't. You never could get a chance to see both sides of a he huge hat at once. Hence the hatpln with two heads has not impressed you so far with the idea that you are see ing double. On one of the new dou ble-ender hatpins the extra end he screws on and off, thus insuring abso lute safety in the hat's position. These are only for medium-sized hats, how ever. Stnve the beehive hats appear , ed, women have been at their wits end to find pins to keep them on. "No hatpin has been made long enough to take In both sides of the large beehive crown," says a London jeweler. "Many are the devices re sorted to in order that the new hat may not slip out of position. Small re pads to pass the pins through are worn. Another device I. the intro e duction of a narrow netting, with a e tiny pincushion suspended from the centre of the crown. A pin from the a right and another from: the left pass d ed into this materially help to keep r 'he hat in place.-New York Press. ng Hoods Worn in London. Milliners In London are going in for s a new branch of business; they are he mking hoods. Whether the wearing Sof boods will ever become at all gen i eral remains to be seean, but they are having a fair trial. The specimens shown are very dainty and not at all unbecoming. The prettiest are certainly those shaped like a frair's cowl, and they are also the most conveniralent as they my roll up small and can be tucked into at the pocket of a theatre wrap or stow a ed away in a traveling bag. Those run in with whalebone are pt, more cumbersome, and this setting 0' out from the face ddoes not improve h their appearance much. if at all. Both i kinds are made of soft taffeta lined with satin and 'trimmed about the front and areound the peck with ruffles e of lace. Sometiltes t~ey are bordered 17 with small fiowens, +hch is a mis st taken neotion; a few knots of ribbon id and the lace are all that is necessary. Hoods are iWorn only when geloing to and from the theatre or other evening l entertainment and when- traveling. 1tl Sera women have taken to them as most kindly, and will immediately doff their hats and put on hoods on boarding a railway ear, retaining them Seven when lunching or dining in the -etanranmt-Millinery Trade Review. Everything oMmes to himn who waits, and the Parislans--mascullae--h9 have groaned so long.eneath the,tmr anny of the theatre bat are rlow, to get their rights. Either no ladies' hats, or a few. exciting* rows-but. more probably both hats and rows- may be expected in Paris theatres when the season opens again. The ever thorough anl thoughtful. Pefect, of Police, as the Telegraph corre spondent tells us, has just issued a new draft of re3ulations for places of en' ainment. In the mass of new regu.ations one stands out. It says that no person may obstruct the vierW of any spectator during a perform,' aace, and if so offending may be cot-' pelled to remove the obstruction, .orf his or her self. Henceforth the arm of the lasW ay be called in to remove the obstructing hat. Relieved of the odium of being rude to the ladies, cne can lay all the blame on superior authority. However, the taking off Of a hat from a lady's head by the brawny arm: of a uniformed municipal guard wlt not be a spectacle without incident, crisis, and denouement. Of coarse, no one expects the ladies themsglyes to forestall the fiat by wearing small -hats. On the contrary, milliners, aco cording to our authority, are exerte. Ing an almost diabolical Ingenuity in their long-laid sachemes for next win ter. For many yetrs past it has 'bee impossible to see over a Parlsienne's hat, but one could somettimes see n der it, and catch gIrmpses of tthe right and left wing of the stage, the centre being intercepted by the nap' of 4 neck billowing with cofaS and curls, The milliners have now deded :that one shalt not even see uidert'the ew hat. It will bb as high as its predei cessors, but the improvement will be that it will come down lower-on b5th sides. To witness mutieipal g~ias, with swashbbucliag • fatrty, iariag off this new hat will be a terribl sight.--London Daly News. Fashion Notes. French and Italian costumers have been.
