On the 14th of March the Reveil le published a letter from lieuten ant Richard Owen of Kentucky, tell ing how private Darrah, a member ot the Claiborne Guards from this county, had fired a ramrod into the Federal lines at Hpottsylvania, in 1864, wounding major Ellis of the 49th N. Y. infantry. The sequel is contained in the following communication to the St. Louis Poit-JHepateh, written by J. E. Rogers of Chautauqua, N. Y.: I was somewhat amused in reading in your paper ofMarch23rdan account of "His Last Shot ,'" a letter written by Mr. Owen, the dashing young lieuten ant, who belonged to the famous 12th Mississippi Volunteers, to Jonn G. Darrah, of New Orleans, who was in the some company, telling him that he had found his ramrod, which was bis last shot at Spottsylvanin, and that Maj. Ellis of the Forty-ninth New York Volunteers was killed with it, I beg leave to correct the statement I hap pened to be there^nd was shot through and through at Spottsylvania and I was with Maj. Ellis in the Lincoln Hos pital, and in tho same ward in Wash ington. He was wounded with a ram rod, but it did not kill him. He pull ed it out of his side and sent it hack where it came from. After bis recov ery from this wound he joined his reg iment and died at the battle of Fort Stevens, August 4th, 18Ä4. Please give this room in your paper, as I should like to have Mr. Owen know that lie has not found the ramrod. I. One Who Wore the Blue. The Reveille has received from Mr. I. I. Lewis, ot Florida, Ohio, a letter on the subject of the approach ing soldiers' reunion at Vicksburg. Mr. Lewis, who served through this locality during the siege of Vicksburg, writes in a most frater nal spirit toward his former foes, and expresses a great desire to at tend the reunion, Though his let ter was not written for publication we take the liberty of making a few extracts : Many will remember the event ful time when on the first of May, 1863, the Federal army crossed the father of waters at Bruinsburg. We left the river under command of Gen. Logan, bidding farewell to Louisiana and its scenery'. Un the 2nd ot May the command of which I wus a member marched through your place about 10 a. in. As the bridge had been destroyed, the command was marched,I think, to the south of town, and waded a small stream which I vividly recol lect. On the opposite bank stood a small locust tree, where I took a short rest, as I was very tired, and to-day under that tree, if standing, mav be found 40"rounds of car tridges that 1 lelt. Any one who has marched carrying 80 rounds of cartridges knows hotv much they weigh. it > • ' * * * * * * Being among tho unfortunates in war, I was taken prisoner near Morton, Miss., and was in Mobile and Cahuba, Ala., Andersonville, Charleston, and Florence, S. V. V. I. Crystal Springs is a town where widows seem to be properly appre ciated. When a vote was lately tak en there on the question of issuing city bonds to build a 110,000 school house, the "tax-paying widows, says the Meteor , "put on their war paint," and sided with thc school house advocates. That journal goes on to sing their praises : "The widows of the town rose un in their indignation to show th'e sel fish men how to improve a town bv increasing its attractions. The wid ows' attitude had much to do with deciding the result. * * * "Uod bless the widows for the fortunate favor ot their all powerful influence in support of town's grandest enterprise. Let widows be praised." And in another column this ad ' ' Bpi ring scribe says : Marriage bells are about to jin* again. This time a widow with w children toset off the nuptial iem.
