These crops were obtained i" the garden of Count Isenburg; and we are further assured by the certificate, to which are attached the signatures of two burgomasters, the Court garden er and grand ducal councillor, and other official personages that they were raised in but partially dressed, and in the midst of tall weeds! The trials of this method in Holland, made in the sum mer of 1834, were attended with results not less astonishing; prepared wheat & rye, though sown thick, gave from 50 to CO, and even 80 stocks from one grain; and a plant of barley bore 8 large cars. Buckwheat rose to 4i and 5 feet flax had 4 and 5 stem from one seed? and Indian corn grew from 8 to 10 feet in height, with 4 to 5 heads from a sin gle corn. The green crops equally lux uriant. ,-,.-. Liebig's Agricultural Chemistry, which has been republished in one of the cheap editions of the New World, teaches us that Ammonia is the great stimulant to the growth of plants. At one of the late agricultural meetings in London, Dr. T. C. Jackson suggested that seeds might be coated with a' gum tny substance, and then rolled in Gua no, enough of which would readily ad heae to produce to produce all the effects ascribed to those foreign prepared seed the new plau being a secret. A mere tea-spoon full of Guano ap plied to a newly struck rose cutting of a (cw inches in length had been sufficient the following spring, to produce a bush some six feet in height. M. Panola, Miss. March 31 1 843. The library edition of the BROTHER JONATHAN: QUARTO. On the first day of January 1812, commence the publication of a Quarto Library Edition fa li Mrolier Jonathan, newspaper. Theimmise quanty of interesting Current Literature which from week to week has been presented in the pa ges of the folio paper, has brought ns from all di rections expressions of regret that the matter is not printed in a shape convenient for preservation. To meet this reasonable objection we have hitherto published on Tuesday' a periodical in quarto form, under the title of Jonathan's Mits eellany : and the suecess of that periodical ba indjeed us still further to improve upon the orig i nal plan by the publication of the Library Edi tioa of Broihur Jonathan, in a Quarto of thirty two pages. , The Qaarto is printed on a sheet larger than the present folio form of the Jonathan. An en- graved i me rage, aesignea Dy one or the first arthts in the country, will give each nomber an dea of completeness and taste. Engraving's of rare merit, such as have hitherto appeared in the folio form of the Brother Jonathan, are introduced into each number, and the work forms THREE ANN UAL VOLUMES OF 544 PAGES EACH For each volame the price is one dollar in ad vance, and three for any one year,' handsomely 'ustrated by the publisheis, and bound according the taste of the subscribers, will form an oma nent for any library, combining the requisites of teatness, compactness and variety, not offered in any publication now extant. The shape of tha volmnes, while it is quite as convenient for rea ders as that of any quarto now printed, has ad vantages in convenience for binding, unapproach ed by any newppaper publication in the world. While thas we pat the matter in a form for preservation, we shall earnestly strive to fender the contents worthy of that preservation, and to do away the reproach that to print an article in a newspaper, is to make an inscription on a water melon. The whole energies of this e..ablishment, publishing, editorial, artistical, and Mechanical, are centered on the Brother Jonathan and the Jol J ar Magazine ; and we are confident thai this im provement, like the original projection of the Jon athan, will mark anew era in periodical literajtnre Tkrms.
