Tub bill appropriating $200,000 for n government public building In San An--onlo passed theScnato yesterday. If tiik arrest of the. fence cutters by the State rangers continues tlio special cession will not have been altogether In vain. Tiik Jtrenliam Jtanncr very truthfully says "the Sax Antonio Lhhit now re joices In a libel suit, but It Is not at.nll ecared." Tiik tono of the country press Is bo coming more and moro free from the behests of the machine In politics, and It promises to bo productive of much good In tho futuro government of the State. A Tin: warm weather approaches It will hecomo more and moro apparent to all good citizens the great need of street and sewer Improvements. Those who doubt tho benefits to be derived from the work should go to tho City Clerk's olllce and examine the details of tho plans and specifications of tho work. Tun San Marcos Freo Press recently criticised tho Sheriff of that county and the management of tho county jail, and the Sheriff became very Indlgnnnt and threatened personal Tlolenco.. Our friend Julian had better take a pointer from the experience of the J.imiT, for some olllcers aro very sensitive touching the general freedom of tho press. "Tin: sewerage question," Bays tho I'leasanton Monitor, "has been post poned from tho 1st to tho 22d instant by tho city authorities of San Antonio, In order that moro time bo given the voter to comprehend tho necessity and utility of an elllclent system of sewerage. If our FloresvIUo contemporary and tho good people of Gray town can now bo persuaded to withdraw their opposition to the measure all will yet be well." The Manhattan Illustrated Magazlno Is Improving with every Issue, and tho .March number Is no exception. Tho more prominent articles are, "What will become of Egypt," by Win. W. Loving, a most Interesting paper. "Creation or Evolution." a phlllsophlcal inquiry, by George Trlcknor Curtis. In the lighter vein are, "What Camo of a Kit of Mackerel;" "The Myth of Elngal's Cave," and "Itaftlng on tho Allegheny." In commentinu on tho libel suit en joyed by tho Lioht, the Longvlow Dem ocrat says: "Tho San Antonio Linirr litis a libel suit, for amusement sake wo su pose, It can scarcely amount to more, for It condemned City Engineer Smith, proved tho justlco of Its condemnation and compiled with the law of libel In all respects. 'Tls said the truth hurts, maybo that was the fault of the Light, It proved Its case. Hut we regret grand juries will lend themsclvcstothese anoy ances, for It Is the duty of papers to pro tect the Interests of the community, and lfpubllo olllclals will fall short of their duties they must expect condemnation. The abusive language exchanged, while Inexcusable, was begun by Smith, and in this much the paper is ahead." Coi-ontx J. L. Haiitow has recently assumed editorial oontrol and manage ment of tho Austin Statesman, and slg nallzed his appearance by preolpltatlng a quarrel with tho Printers' union by reason of a redaction In the price of com position.. Every man Is presumed to run his own business as suits him best, but It Is to bo regretted that Colonel Uartow should so uniformly get into controver sies with the union wherover he has had the management of papers. Union printers, as a class, are much more re liable than non-union men, and tho wages paid for all-night work has, here tofore, not been believed to bo exhorbl tant, and whether such a move will pay Is for tho futuro to determine. The Statosman has always been a good paper, and we hope It will continue bo. Tub Hebrew Leader, In an article on tlieLasker resolutions, says: "Whatever .diplomacy may allcgo In regard to tho reported Insult of Prince Bismarck to the memory of Horr LaUker nnd how ever tho leading men on both nldog may endeavor to smooth down tho milled feelings of tho United States and Ger many It Is certain that tho German autocrat has at some tlmo uttered words which oxpresscil his alway thinly dis guised contempt for a Democracy and for llcpubllcan institutions. That 111s marck hates tho United States, every man knows who Is acquainted with pub lic affairs and that ho had n personal and bitter hatred of tho great ltadlcat leader, Ilcrr Lasker, all Germany well knows. To add to his other offenses, Ilcrr Laskcrwas an Israelite, and Prince lllsmarck Is tho dcolarcd enemy of nil Jews and takes it as n peculiar hardship that In Germany the Jews tnkon lead ing position In Parliament as well us In tho learned professions, In business and In tho arts. Therefore, wheii Germany gave Hm great Ihulleal leader a magnifi cent funeral and the United Stnles hnsl ened to lay Its wreath of laurels upon his bier a Wreath which was pealed with tho authoritative declaration of sym pathy on the part of Congress it Is no wonder that I ho (ionium Chancellor, who Is tho real ruler of tho Germnn Um pire, broko out Into wrathful denuncia tion of tho great l.'epnbllo which has af forded elicit cr to so many hundred thou sands of German exiles. A denial now will eonio too late. Tho world knows there Is reason for tholllsmarck's wrath. A higher compliment could not havo been paid to tho memory of Ilcrr Lasker than this latest discussion overtho grave of tho great German statesman. It is a confession that he was also a benefactor of his kind and one who was devoted to their Interests. A merely selfish man a politician bent on his own ambitious views could not havo wakened tho echoes of the world overlils grave as has been done here. Hut tho tolling masses In Germany and the United States know In llerr Lasker n man who wns working unselfishly for tho advancement of his kind, and they not only honored him for his work but are ready to avenge, with their blood If need be, nny Insult that Ib offered to Ills memory. Truly tho labors of the great who aro good live after them, and oven In death they are a terror to those who oppress tho Lord's people." BARGAINS "OFFERED lT ' W. Hradley, Land Agent.
