A YOUNG GERMAN FOUND WITH A HOLE IN HIS HEAD. The Coronfr'jlnquojt--Tcsllmony cflho Youth's Mother--Rodrijuez, His Companion, Under Arreit. Lout night nbortly nflr-r 12 o'clook tho sharp report of Hirer pistol shots llrcd In quick succession, attracted attention to tho vicinity of Washington square nenr the Mono yard. Upon hastening to thu spot Policemen Mcl.aln and Hog ers found the body of August Weltlfk lying dead on the street. He had n shot through hU head near the car, from which the blood nnd brains were pour ing out. They aroused I.. A. Valdez, bar keeper at tho Cardlnas saloon, nnd requested him to como anil Bee if ho could Identify tho body. Ho did bo, recognizing it as that of August Wel tln. Weltln was a young German 21 years of age, and was In tho employ of 1'aul Mnurcaux. lie was tho only son of Christine Weltln, who lives on Mar ket utreet, and rung u littio coliee stand In tho market. Ho had not been homo Blneo Sunday, and was out drinking and carousing with sonic companions last night, and was considerably under the Influcnuo of liquor when last seen nllve. One of his companions was Jose Hodrl guez, a Mexican, also In Mnureaux's em ploy. Itodrlgucz nnd Weltln wcro tho last to leave Valdcz's place, tho former going a few minutes boforo Weltln, who wnlled nnd got from nldcz his pistol, which had been taken from him earlier in the evening. He had only gotten some ISO or 200 yards from tho snloon when the shots wero llrcd, and Special Policeman Mol.aln, who was at tho saloon, upon running out found him as stilted. Justice Anton Adam was no tified and summoned n jury, who viewed tho body, and the Inquest was continued this morning. Mrs. Christine Weltln, mother of tho deceased, was first ex amined, and deposed as follows : I am tho mother of the, deceased, Au gust Weltln. On last Snnday, March 10, 1SSI, August had taken several dollars from mo and I repremanded him and told him he should not have done that. After which he left tho house and did not return any mora, nnd I had not seen him until he was brought dead in my houso this morning, March 21, 1881. I have always treated August' kindly and advised him for his own good as a mother should do, and be had no oauso to complain whatever. August was a sober, steady boy, and always willing to work. I have never heard my son August make any threats that he would take his own life. I nave no Idea how the killing occurred, whether by his own hands or by tho hands of some assassin August was born In San Antonio, and was 21 years old. Tho next witness was Jose Itodrlguez, Weltin's companion of last night, lie testified that ho and August Weltln had been aoflualnted for 10 years. That they had been Bitting nearly all day on some wagons on the plaza In front of r roars storo ami auouiu o'CiooK last niirlit went to Paul Maurcaux's stable. Afterwards Weltln went to get somc- tmng to eat anil asked tue witness to wait at Kamon Marline's. They after wards met Tallafero llarrera anil to gether tho four went to the Cardenas saloon. After throwing dico awhile and taking some drinks Weltln proposed to iro to "101" and Bhoot out the llirhts. Went by himself and after a short ab sence returned. He told witness It was the last night ho would run with him. Witness told him not to talk that way 'nnd asked for his pistol. AVeltln refused to clve It un. and then he called him aside and again asked for tho pistol. Again he rolused and witness threw him down and took It awav and cave it to Valdez, the barkeeper. After some further talk witness re marked that ho was coiner home and started oil'. Weltm asked htm to wait, and halloed to him. He came out of the saloon and had got about 00 yards from me when he asked, "Where are you?" Witness replied, "Hero I am," tremn mem Baiu, "Li u u n me," ami Immediately witness heard shots fired. Thinks there were two or three shots fired. Witness ran oil', thlnklne Weltln was firing wildly and he didn't want to be arrested. Came to the plaza and held Jim Draper's team while the latter went In and danced a set at the Vuudevllle. Afterwards rode on Draper's hack over to "110," and waited there about an hour and a half. Heard then that some bodv had been shot In the neighborhood of "iui," aim at onco supposeu it was August, because he was the only one he hau seen with a pistol and last saw him near that house. Witness testified that his relations with AVeltln had nlwnys been friendly, and that August had told hlui for three or four days that ne inienueu snooting nimseii. saw mm with thonlstol durlnir the dar and iden tified pistol shown him In court us same one. . L. A. Valdez, bar keeper at the Car dlnas saloon, was next sworn. He testi fied as to Weltln. Itodrlcuez. Martins llarrera, Montes and others having been In tho saloon and that all had gone and leu Koanguez and weltln, TliatKou rlgnez soon left and Weltln. after get tine his nlstol from him IValdezl fol lowed, whistling to Itodrlguez as he stepped out. lie was answered and started off. Had gone ho supposed 150 or 200 yards when thrco shots wcro llrcd. fired. He thought be was simply shooting .because he was drunk, anti pant no attention to it, nui locked up tho saloon and went to bed. v as arouseu uy I'oucemen lingers anil Mol.aln to Identify the body, lie heard something to somebody about ge'tttng tho "G. II.," but did not know who ho was talking to. It. W. liogers, policeman, next testi fied, that shortly after 12 o'clook ho was met by Mol.aln, who asked him to go with him as ho thought a man had been shot on Washington square. Went and found Weltin's body near the cast end of the fence; snw n pistol lying about live feet from the body with the muzzle pointing toward the body. Joe Mcl.aln, special policeman, tes tifies that ho entered Valdcz's place auout li o'ciook last nignt and mere (aw Itodrlguez, Montez and Weltln; also a man sitting on a keg at tho door. Itod rlguez said that man meant something and went out saying ho was going homo and If any body bad anything against him they could follow htm. Itodrlguez returned and picked up two rocks. He and Weltln whistled to each other. Tho latter then called Valdez Into a back room nnd then came out nnd bade them good night. The Inquest was hero adjourned until 1 o'olock. TO-MORROW'S ELECTION. Will the C(il:ensorSan Antonio Vole for Sewerage and Keep San Antonio Healthy 7 The nil Important eewcrago question which has been undergoing discussion In this oity for weeks past is to be settled to-morrow by an election. Tho proposi tion Is to volo bonds to tho extent of $:i.W,000 and sell them and with the funds thus realized provide adequate modern sewerage for tho oity. None we think will deny tho dire necessity of sewerage to promoto health and gain the oltysome Immunity from epidemics and disease AUsoits of quibbles nnd objections are urged, howover, by those who are op posed to tho proposition. Some seem to be afraid to entrust the oity olllcers of their own choice with the manipulation of any of the money from the sale of bonds. OthcrsfcarthattheSan Antonio river will not supply water enough to Hush sewers and provide the citizens with enough of tho fluid to drink. Other objections equally weak and worthless aro raised, but these will all go down ere tho set of to-morrow's sun before an overwhelming majority In favor of pro gress, health and sewerage. Tho city olllcers have the true Interests of tho city at heart and will see to It that the money appropriated Is rigidly expended. The voting of these bonds will not entail any burdensome taxation, as tho rate will only be about one-fifth of ono per cent, Again tho increased valuo of property nnd the now improvements that will be added will inaveryfewyearssotnorease the assessed values of city property that the tax will not bo felt. Some hundreds of thousands of dollars will seek Invest ment here ns soon as the sewerage pro position carries, which will go elsewhere If that proposition Is defeated. Vote tor sewerage and health. MASS MEETING. Public Discussion of the Proposed Sewer pronemenl.
