Copeland preached to a very large concourse of people at New Liberty on last Sunday. They had dinner on the ground and I am told that it was good—they never do things by halves over there. Miss Lettic Haskell, sister of Mrs. If. Stainton, who has been spending the summer at this place, left Mon day for her home in DesMoincs, la., to attend school this winter. Miss Lettic has a host of friends that are sorry to see her leave. Dam< >i I.KS. Lunching Leaflets. Cotton has opened rapidly the past few days. Some have commenced to gather their corn, which is a much heavier job than last year's crop. Madam Rumor says that Jack Burrow is likely to have business at the Clerk’s office ere long. Our pastor, Rev. J. L. I’ipkin be ing absent, Rev. Wesley House preached an interesting and edifying sermon for us at Rocky Mount, Sun day evening. Lonnie Wren and wife have the sincere sympathy of many friends in their sad bereavement in the death of little Lillian, their only child, which occurred on the 14th iust. A Mr. Farrell is teaching penman ship at Laneburg—teaches at night. He is a line penman and seems to understand the science well, lie: claims to hail from Nashville, Teun. Mr. Albert McGough, who has been at Deport, Texas, for two or three weeks, came home last week. Don’t know how lie enjoyed bis trip —his papa says lie is like the little boy the calf run over. D.'s of our county no one is rising more rapidly in the confidence and esteem of the people than my friend Dr. N. A. Hitt. He is descrvinglv popular, successful in practice, reasonable in charges, patient and forbearing with debtors, and withal a nice man and clever gentleman. Mr. J. (). A. Bush is a pretty good talker. Mr. .J. 1*. Mctiongh says “from the way lie quoted scrip ture with moistened eyes at Lane burg the other day. that he would make a pretty good revivalist.” But with nilliissmooth, sympathetic talk, like Auslcy, Norwood and the rest of them, his leading idea is to preju dice the minds of the people against the Democratic party by asserting that the Democratic party is equally responsible with the It“puldican par ty for the enaction of all laws that oppress the laboring class. The Alliance, like the Wheel, was a good thing un til these oltiee hunters made a polit eal machine of it. Now let us give the Alliance as well as the third par ts a wide berth. It is a plain, evi dent fact, if we ever get any relief it will be in and through the Demo cratic party. Study and investigate for ourselves, take no assertion un less substantiated by indisputuable proof. Mr. Ben Tribble of Woodlawu, was here some time ago, visiting friends. Come again Ben, we are glad to sec you at all times. Mr. Willie Barker of Baton Rouge, La., is on a visit to his brother, (ins. Barker of this place. Mr. Barker says he expects to make this home. Singing at Pleasant Hill on Sun day last, conducted bv Prof. .las. R. Marsh. Mr. M. is thoroughly equip- j ped to till the position of singing master. My esteemed friend Mr. T. A. Potter, is at present building a new gin-house, where he expects to ac commodate the people in every way he possibly can. Mr. Editor you will allow me the privilege this week of writing along letter, as I have been silent now for two weeks. Your compliments of last week wore appreciated. W. M. Ramage says he intends go ing up in Union township Sunday. Anyone wishing to know- what that means will call on Miss Iris B.. and I think they can be convinced of the fact. Farmers in this community are making some headway in regard to gathering the enormous cotton crop which they have strived very hard to raise. I will not say enormous Init little crop, now though. Mr. I. II. Blakely, one of our best farmers and a good citizen, left a few days ago to visit his brother, K. V. lilakcly of Lamar county, Texas. Mr. Blakely intends going from there to Fannin county to visit the Flow ers Bros. L. A. Moody, Esq. says if it were not for his babies it would not be more than two days before the sun would quit rising on him in Arkan sas. That is not much of an excuse. Mr. Moody, you can leave the ba bies a little while, any way. Mr. W. E. Mendenhall says he ex pects to make a buggy some time | shortly. What does that mean ? Will, we expect if you were to ex plain the matt r it would be for Miss Louise. That’s right, Willie, make you a little buggy so you can carry somebody riding. I*r. Leo. Marsh says we must have another meeting at Carolina, which I predict we will 'have. Doctor, 1 am glad to see you taking so much in terest in protracted meetings. 1 have been informed by some that Mrs. N. A. Snell says we are going to have 150 preachers to assist in the meeting. It looks to me like if we 1 get that number of preacher* we might have a glorious, good meet ing. All are iv [Hiited better now, l believe. Two young gentlemen made a raid on a watermelon patch on Saturday night last. They left home in a gig, hut ihey got so many melons that they were obliged to walk home, bringing the melons in the gig. Everybody must attend the exhi bition on Friday night next. It will be the close of Miss Musette Mack's school. Her stay among us has been pleasant., though most of her time has been devoted to her school. She will start to Hope a day or two af terwards. Three of our young gentlemen made Mr. Jim Brockman a present of a fifteen cent cuspidore. When they presented it he arose and very kindly thanked them for it, and said he’d always remember them in his prayers, which speech brought down the house. The entertainment given by Mr. Mandhan on Friday night last, was a decided success. That gentleman should feel amply repaid for his trouble in preparing it. Although a good many well prepared pieces were left out on account of parties being absent, everything was excellent. I) win os Tiler <»kekn. Obituary. Mr. John li. Almand was horn in Georgia. December 1, 1830, and lived there until lie was about grown and then moved to Arkansas. Be fore the war he moved back to Geor gia, and there he enlisted in the Southern Army served all through the war, and iu 1887, he moved with his family back to Nevada county, Ark. lie was a true Christian, and was a member of the Primitive Bap tist church up to his death, lie was taken sick on the first da}' of July Iasi, and lay about two weeks, and got mi lie could lie up, but was taken down again in a few days, and was confined to bis bed until the 17th day of September, when he died, lb' was buried at Friendship church, the 1st li.
