BIER, XI AM AGE R Columbia Courier WILL J SHAUGHNESSY EDITOR and PROPRIETOR TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION One Year, in Advance - • $1.50 Bix Months - .75 Thre® Months v - - - .50 President Roosevelt has started in on that cleaning up process that a large number os people expected him to begin wiih his accession to the presidency upon the death ol President McKiuley. He has made a start with the Panama Commis sion and made a clean sweep. He has put that institution on a busi ness basis aud is going to build that canal on the same piincipal that private corporations bund theirj railroads and other works. Graft is not going to cut a very conspicu ous part in it. There are several other departments that will be treated to the same medicine, and from the way he has made the land fraud artists go down the line we may look for strenuous times around Washington during the next pear or two. The president is winning back many of his old ad mirers, who backslid during the time he was holding down Presi dent MiKinley's unexpired term. There is scarcely a city or town in the Pacific northwest that does not maintain some sort of a busi ness men's organization. If they do not it is an evidence of short sightedness that should be removed without delay. The value of these voluntary associations to a com munity ean not be overestimated. Organization is the watchword of the times, and unorganized effort whether in business or city build iug, means wasted energy. A thousand and one things are pos sible of accomplishment for the benefit of a community by united action which would never be real, ized by individual initiative. The alfalfa fields are all green and the alfalfa farmers are all pleased with the prospect. They expect to cut their hay five times during the present season. This comes from the extreme early season this year. Frank Flint and wife from Seattle are building a residence on the land recently par chased fronting on the Columbia river. It is the intention of Mr. Flint to go extensively into the raising of tomatoes. —Homeseeker. The outlook "for a very early crop of strawberries is highly en couraging. The warm weather of the past few /lays has brought out the bl ssoms till the patches have changed from green to snow white. It is estimated by those who know that our first picking's will go on the market about the 3rd or 4th of next month. The plants throughout the valley are in a very healthy condition and the yield will be heavy.
