6 Pam Labor Will Be Short in '4l Shortage of farm labor will still pose a major problem to far mers throughout Washington next year, despite recent reports to the contrary. This forecast is made by Robert Pelley, assistant extension farm labor supervisor, Washington State College. Pelly brands as “misleading" a recent report to the effect that, in place of the war-time labor short— age on farms, the state now has an abundance of farm workers. “We may have plenty of farm workers right now—during the winter months— when the state’s farming-plant is practically shut down except for the usual year round jobs, but this doesn’t mean there’ll be no shortage of farm labor for seasonal jobs during the 1947 crop year," he said. It is true, he added, that since the close of the war there has been an increase in the numbers of do mestic and migrant farm workers; however, the effect of this in crease is largely offset by the fact that no German prisoners of war will be available this year, and few, if any, Mexican Nationals. Washington farmers must look to migrant farm workers for a large percentage of their seasonal help next year, Pelley believes. He says last year a noticeable in crease occurred in the number of migrants entering this state, par ticularly in areas such as Yakima Valley, where they could get con tinuous employment during the crop season. Elly Library Beginning the New Year all numbers of borrowers cards have been changed. Therefore please ask the librarian for your new number the next time that you check out books. The prefix to the new numbers indicates the year of expiration. No charge is made to those living within the city limits, those paying taxes on city pro perty, or to students of the Ken newick public schools.
